Yes. Rockstar says Grand Theft Auto VI has a Los Angeles team specifically writing pedestrian dialogue, alongside advertising and comedy writers in New York, Los Angeles, and London. The studio describes this incidental material as an authored part of the world—not disposable filler—and says it should feel natural both in passing and when a player stops to listen.
Who writes GTA 6’s background dialogue?
Rockstar Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries told LOVE Magazine that the studio has “a specific team of pedestrian dialogue writers in LA” as well as “a team of advertising and comedy writers across New York, LA, and London.” Writing Director James Horton said Rockstar started a new Los Angeles writing team devoted to pedestrian dialogue and paired it with a dedicated production team focused on the same work.

The interview does not state how many people are on these teams. It also does not give a total for dialogue lines or recorded actors, or explain how the game selects and plays particular lines. The comments describe Rockstar’s staffing and creative aims, not the technical implementation or scale in measurable terms.
What Rockstar means by “background noise”
Humphries says the writers and creatives come from “all sorts of backgrounds and walks of life,” with a shared sense of humour and interest in the absurdity of people, media, and advertising. He rejects the idea that this work is merely background: “It’s all part of the tapestry of the game and creates the experience of living in this wild world.”

That approach fits the broader world Rockstar described in the same interview. Co-studio head Rob Nelson said the studio begins its research in the real place inspiring a game, then develops locations, characters, and a broad narrative through iterative work. Co-studio head Aaron Garbut described research trips across southern Florida, from Miami through surrounding towns and the Florida Keys to Key West. Those comments offer context for the emphasis on a specific, varied setting; they do not establish how individual incidental lines were researched.
How the dialogue is meant to work
Horton describes two listening situations the writing has to serve:

- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
- In motion: Conversation fragments should wash over the player while moving through a busy street, contributing to the sense of a city full of people.
- Up close: A conversation should still sound convincing if the player stops and pays attention to it.
Horton calls this both creative and technically demanding: the dialogue must fit into a system while the system itself fades from the player’s awareness. His phrase about hearing “snatches of a hundred different conversations” is an illustration of that passing, crowded-street effect—not a published count of conversations or lines in the game.
He sums up the intended scale as ensemble work: “No single writer could begin to attempt something on this scale. You need an ensemble team to make an ensemble world.” Rockstar has not disclosed a headcount or other figure that quantifies that scale.

Background speech sits alongside other in-world storytelling
Humphries also described GTA VI’s satire as amplifying aspects of real life rather than simply mirroring them. He pointed to in-world channels beyond face-to-face conversations, including signs, campaign robocalls, advertising, and radio talk shows. That places pedestrian dialogue within a wider mix of authored material intended to make the setting feel inhabited, without establishing how those channels connect technically.

- Confirmed by Rockstar: A Los Angeles team specifically writes pedestrian dialogue; advertising and comedy writers work across New York, Los Angeles, and London; and a dedicated production team was paired with the pedestrian-dialogue team.
- Rockstar’s stated goal: Conversations should function as ambient snippets while the player moves and remain convincing when heard attentively.
- Not disclosed in the interview: Team sizes, dialogue or recording totals, runtime selection rules, and whether individual pedestrians have separately authored life stories.
As of Rockstar’s official game listing, GTA VI was planned for November 19, 2026. Rockstar lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S; it had not launched as of the October 5 interview. Rockstar’s platforms, editions, and versions support page says the physical version is a code-in-box product with no disc.
