In the United States and Canada, the ESRB rates it M (Mature 17+). The official rating lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases.
Rockstar Games lists the launch platforms as PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a stated release date of November 19, 2026. Before buying for a teenager, read every descriptor, confirm the console and account requirements, review spending controls, and decide whether the content fits your household rules. The rating is not a scene-by-scene guide, so families should treat it as a clear adult-content warning rather than a complete description of every moment in the game.

What age rating does GTA 6 have?
The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rates Grand Theft Auto VI M for Mature 17+ in the United States and Canada. The ESRB’s summary says: “Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol. Also includes In-Game Purchases.”
An M rating is intended as a strong signal that the game is designed for adults, not as a recommendation for younger children. It does not legally guarantee that every retailer will refuse a sale to someone under 17, and console-account enforcement can vary by family settings and region. Parents should therefore treat the rating as the starting point for a family decision, not as a substitute for supervision or account controls.

What the rating does—and does not—tell you
ESRB descriptors identify content elements that contributed to a rating or may concern buyers. They do not provide a complete scene-by-scene catalogue, an exact count of violent encounters, a reliable estimate of playtime, or a full description of every online interaction. PlayStation explains that content descriptors indicate elements in a game that may have triggered a particular rating and/or may be of interest or concern.
That distinction matters for GTA 6. The official rating establishes that the listed categories are present, but it does not establish how often a particular event occurs, whether every mode contains every element, or how a specific player will encounter it. Until suitable primary sources publish more detailed information, avoid treating rumors, clips, or informal summaries as a complete content guide.

Use the table below to translate the official descriptors into the questions most parents need answered. The “what it establishes” column sticks to what the rating confirms; the “family question” column helps you apply it without inventing details that have not been officially described.

|---|---|---|
| Blood and Gore | The rating identifies depictions of blood and gore. | Are visible injury effects and graphic aftermath unacceptable for your child? |
| Intense Violence | The game contains violence the ESRB considers intense. | Would the likely frequency or intensity of violent action conflict with your family rules? |
| Mature Humor | Humor intended for mature audiences is present. | Can your teenager handle adult jokes and themes without copying or repeating them inappropriately? |
| Nudity | The rating includes nudity. | Do your device, viewing, and supervision rules permit a game that may show nudity? |
| Strong Language | The game includes language the ESRB classifies as strong. | Which words are prohibited in your home, and how will you respond if they appear? |
| Strong Sexual Content | Sexual material is considered strong enough to be named in the rating. | Is your child mature enough for sexual themes, and are you comfortable with the possibility of explicit material? |
| Use of Drugs and Alcohol | Drug and alcohol use is depicted or otherwise represented. | How will you explain the difference between fictional depiction and approval of real-world substance use? |
| In-Game Purchases | The storefront rating disclosure says purchases can occur in the game. | Are payment methods protected, and can your child buy content without your approval? |
Violence, blood, and gore
“Blood and Gore” and “Intense Violence” are separate descriptors, so do not reduce them to a generic “action” label. Together they tell you that the ESRB found both violent activity and blood or gore significant enough to disclose. The rating does not quantify how graphic a particular scene is or how frequently it appears. If your child is sensitive to injury imagery, ask whether your family is comfortable with a game whose official rating includes both categories.
Nudity and strong sexual content
Nudity and Strong Sexual Content are also listed separately. That is a more serious warning than a game that merely contains romance or a nonsexual reference. The rating confirms that parents may encounter nudity and sexual material judged strong by the ESRB, but it does not publish a complete inventory of scenes or explain how optional each encounter is. Do not promise a child that such content can always be skipped unless an official guide specifically confirms that.
Strong language and mature humor
Strong Language signals that profanity is part of the rated experience. Mature Humor indicates jokes or comedic situations aimed at adults. These descriptors can matter even in a household that is less concerned about violence, because dialogue and humor may be repeated in voice chat, quoted at school, or imitated by younger siblings. Set expectations before purchase instead of relying on a child to recognize which material is inappropriate.
Drugs and alcohol
Use of Drugs and Alcohol means substance use is included in the rated content. The descriptor does not, by itself, tell you whether the game condemns, rewards, or simply depicts that behavior. If substance use is a sensitive subject in your family, make that part of the buying conversation and supervision plan.
In-game purchases
The rating discloses In-Game Purchases. This is a spending warning, not a statement that every purchase is required to finish the game. Before installation, check whether a payment card, wallet balance, or saved billing method is attached to the child’s console account. Use purchase approval, password, PIN, or family-authorization controls where the platform supports them, and explain that virtual items still cost real money.

Where and when can you play GTA 6?
| Officially listed detail | What parents should verify |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Confirm that the child has a PS5 rather than a PS4. The listed launch information does not include a PS4 edition. |
| Xbox Series X|S | Confirm that the child has an Xbox Series X or Series S rather than an Xbox One. The listed launch information does not include an Xbox One edition. |
| Release date: November 19, 2026 | Check the store page again near purchase; release information and storefront details can change before launch. |
| Other platforms | The official launch pages do not list a launch edition for Nintendo Switch or PC. |
The platform list is important because buying the wrong edition can create an expensive, avoidable mistake. A PS5 copy is not a PS4 entitlement simply because both consoles are made by the same company, and an Xbox Series edition should not be assumed to run on Xbox One. Availability, edition names, regional listings, and prices should be checked at the time you click to buy.
Account, internet, and offline-play conditions
PlayStation 5
The PlayStation listing identifies offline play for the PS5 edition. “Offline play” does not remove the need to review the account used for purchase, download, updates, or family restrictions. A child can still access inappropriate material or spend money if the account is configured with unrestricted age, communication, or payment permissions.
Xbox Series X|S
Xbox notes that some features may require internet access, a Rockstar account, age-dependent registration, fees, or later changes. Those conditions can vary by feature and may change after launch. If your child does not have permission to create or link an external account, resolve that question before buying. Do not assume that an offline-capable console means every part of the game works offline.
Questions to answer before purchase
- Which adult account owns the game, and who can sign in to it?
- Will the child be asked to create or link a Rockstar account?
- Does the child’s age permit the required registration in your region?
- Is an internet connection needed for the features your child expects to use?
- Could a subscription, fee, or later service change affect those features?
- Are communication and multiplayer permissions appropriate for this child?
A parent’s pre-purchase checklist
Complete these checks in order. They separate a content decision from a technical or financial one, so a child does not receive a game that the family cannot safely manage.
- Read the M 17+ symbol and all descriptors. Record the categories that matter most in your household: violence, blood and gore, nudity, sexual content, language, humor, substances, and spending.
- Make a household decision. Decide whether the listed material fits your child’s maturity, your family’s values, and any restrictions related to violence, sexuality, profanity, or substance use. “They are almost 17” is not the same as meeting the rating’s intended audience.
- Confirm the hardware. Verify that the child will play on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S. Do not buy expecting a launch PS4, Xbox One, Switch, or PC version when none is listed in the official launch information.
- Check the edition and region. Confirm the exact edition, platform, region, and price at checkout. Store listings can change, especially before the stated November 19, 2026 release.
- Review the account arrangement. Identify the purchasing account, the child account, any required Rockstar account, age-dependent registration, and whether internet access is available.
- Lock down spending. Remove saved payment methods from a child account or require an adult password, PIN, or approval for every purchase. Verify the setting with a small, permitted transaction only if your family’s rules allow testing.
- Set communication and online limits. Use the console’s family settings to restrict messaging, voice communication, user-generated interactions, and online access when appropriate. The exact labels and options can vary by console software version and region.
- Plan supervision. Decide where the console will be used, who can play, when sessions end, and how your child should report uncomfortable content or contact from another player.
- Recheck near launch. Review the current ESRB record, store page, platform requirements, and account notices immediately before purchase. Release and storefront information can change.
How to use PS5 and Xbox family controls
Both console families provide parental-control features, but the names and available switches can change with software updates, account type, and region. Start from the adult account’s current Family, Family Management, or parental-controls area, then work through the categories below rather than enabling only an age filter.
Age-rated game access
Set the child account’s permitted game rating below M 17+ if your child is not allowed to play mature-rated games. An age filter can block the title, but it should be paired with purchase approval because a child may otherwise download a different edition or add-on.
Purchases and payment methods
Require an adult password, PIN, or explicit approval for purchases. Check both the console account and any linked store account. In-Game Purchases appears in the rating disclosure, so do not assume that blocking the initial game purchase also blocks later transactions.
Communication and online access
Restrict voice chat, text messaging, friend requests, and interactions with people outside the child’s approved list when those controls are available. Xbox’s listing warns that some features may require internet access and account registration; PlayStation’s offline-play note does not mean online communications are automatically disabled.

- Play as Dani Rojas, a local Yaran, as you fight alongside a modern-day guerrilla revolution to liberate Yara
- Fight against Castillo’s regime in the most expansive Far Cry to date, through jungles, beaches, and Esperanza, the capital city of Yara
- Employ an arsenal of resolver weapons, backpacks, and vehicles to take down Castillo’s ruthless regime.
Time and activity limits
Use play-time schedules or daily limits if your family needs them. These controls address duration, not content: a short session can still include material covered by the M 17+ descriptors.
Check the controls from the child’s account
After saving restrictions, sign in as the child and confirm that a mature-rated game, an in-game purchase, a communication request, and an online feature behave as expected. Menus can differ between adult and child profiles, and a restriction applied to one account may not cover another profile on the same console.
How GTA 6 compares with another game
If your teenager asks why one game is allowed and another is not, compare them on the same seven axes rather than arguing from reputation or popularity.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Comparison axis | What to examine |
|---|---|
| Age rating and descriptor severity | Compare the official rating category and the exact descriptors, not just a marketing label. |
| Violence | Check whether violence is mild, frequent, intense, or paired with blood and gore. |
| Sexual content and nudity | Look for separate disclosures of nudity, sexual themes, or strong sexual content. |
| Language and humor | Check whether strong language or mature humor is specifically listed. |
| Drugs and alcohol | Determine whether substance use is disclosed and whether that conflicts with household rules. |
| Spending and accounts | Review in-game purchases, payment controls, required accounts, fees, and age-dependent registration. |
| Online and parental controls | Compare internet requirements, communication options, offline availability, and the platform’s family settings. |
This method avoids a common mistake: assuming that a game with a similar genre has similar content. Two open-world games can differ substantially in sexual content, language, spending, or online requirements even when both feature action and driving.
What the official information cannot answer yet
The current official material establishes the ESRB descriptors, the listed platforms, the November 19, 2026 release date, and the account or connectivity notes described above. It does not provide a dependable scene-by-scene index, a complete account of online interactions, or a reliable playtime estimate.
That means parents should not promise that a particular scene is absent, that every mature element is optional, or that a child can avoid all contact with strangers simply by playing a certain mode. Wait for a suitable primary source if you need those details, and reassess the decision when the final store and rating information is available.
Quick Recap
Bottom-line decision guide for parents
Do not buy yet if…
- Your child is under your household’s allowed age for M-rated games.
- Any of the listed categories—intense violence, blood and gore, nudity, strong sexual content, strong language, mature humor, or drugs and alcohol—conflicts with your family rules.
- You cannot secure payment methods and block unauthorized in-game purchases.
- You cannot provide the required PS5 or Xbox Series X|S hardware, internet access, or account registration.
Consider buying only with a safety plan if…
- Your teenager is within the intended mature age range and understands the difference between fictional content and real-world behavior.
- You have reviewed every descriptor and accepted the possibility of adult material rather than relying on the game’s title or genre.
- An adult controls the purchasing account, payment approvals, communication settings, and online access.
- You are prepared to revisit the decision after checking the final store page and rating information near release.
