The short version is that GTA 6 is broader in setting and more focused in its cast, while GTA 5 remains the only one of the two with a fully documented online ecosystem.
How the maps differ
GTA 5: Los Santos and Blaine County
GTA 5 is built around Los Santos, a fictional Southern California-inspired city, and Blaine County, the rural and desert region surrounding it. The contrast between dense city districts, highways, mountains, countryside and the coast supports the game’s three-character structure: missions can move from urban crime to wilderness pursuits without leaving Southern San Andreas.

GTA 6: Leonida is larger in concept than Vice City alone
GTA 6 returns to Vice City, but Rockstar’s confirmed setting is the larger fictional state of Leonida. Vice City is the urban center shown in the promotional material; the story also travels through areas beyond the city. Rockstar’s store synopsis describes a criminal conspiracy “stretching across the state of Leonida,” making clear that Vice City is not the complete confirmed map.
Rockstar has not published an official acreage, coastline length or percentage comparison with GTA 5. Therefore, saying that GTA 6 is “larger” is justified as a statement about scope—an entire state with multiple regions—not as a precise measurement. Fan-made maps, leaked claims and estimates based on trailer frames should not be treated as specifications.
What the wider setting changes for play
A state-wide setting can support longer journeys and more varied mission locations than a city-and-county layout, but Rockstar has not explained how transportation, fast travel, interiors or regional activities will work. Trailers do show characters driving through city streets and traveling between different-looking environments. Those scenes establish variety, not a complete list of map systems.

GTA 5’s three-way viewpoint
GTA 5 places Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips at the center of one connected crime narrative. Players can switch among the three during free roam and, in designed sequences, missions can shift viewpoints to coordinate a heist. Their different skills, relationships and social positions let the campaign alternate between organized criminal operations, street-level ambition and unpredictable violence.

GTA 6’s Jason-and-Lucia partnership
GTA 6 follows Jason and Lucia, a two-person criminal duo. Rockstar’s official synopsis says that an easy score goes wrong, leaving them on “the darkest side of the sunniest place in America” and in the middle of a conspiracy across Leonida. The pair must rely on each other to survive.
This is a structural change, not just a reduction from three characters to two. The confirmed story emphasis is a partnership: schemes, danger and consequences are framed through Jason and Lucia’s relationship. Rockstar has not described a character-switching menu equivalent to GTA 5’s three-way system, nor has it published details about separate abilities, inventories or mission roles. Any claim that those systems work exactly as they did in GTA 5—or in a radically different way—goes beyond confirmed information.
Gameplay: what is shown and what is still unknown
Trailer-confirmed activities
Rockstar says Trailer 2 was captured entirely in-game from a PlayStation 5 and consists of equal parts gameplay and cutscenes. The footage shows:
- Driving through Vice City streets and traveling across Leonida.
- Shooting and armed confrontations.
- Robberies and criminal preparation.
- Nightlife, parties and other social scenes.
- Social-media-style footage integrated into the world’s presentation.
These scenes demonstrate the tone, visual presentation and broad activity types Rockstar is targeting. They do not constitute a complete feature checklist. A trailer can show a scripted sequence without confirming that every related behavior is available during free roam.

How that compares with GTA 5’s known systems
GTA 5 has years of publicly documented gameplay: its campaign combines driving, shooting, stealth, flight, hunting, property activities, heists and character switching, while later updates added online missions, businesses, vehicles, creator tools and other modes. GTA 6’s campaign mechanics will only be fully comparable after Rockstar publishes more details or the game launches.

What GTA Online offers today
Rockstar describes GTA Online as a dynamic, evolving online universe for up to 30 players. It supports playing alone or with friends, businesses, missions, creator tools and the accumulated gameplay upgrades and content released since launch. That makes GTA Online a mature service rather than a small multiplayer side mode: players can build criminal enterprises, participate in cooperative or competitive activities and create or discover user-made experiences.
GTA 5’s online model also has a long history of updates. Content, balance and access can vary by platform edition and update, so a feature present in one version or period should not automatically be assumed to be part of the launch package for GTA 6.

Rockstar’s cited GTA 6 materials do not confirm an online mode’s name, player count, launch date, progression system, businesses, creator tools, cross-generation transfer or compatibility with existing GTA Online characters and purchases. They also do not establish whether multiplayer will launch alongside the campaign or arrive later.

Because there is no official specification, it is not accurate to promise a 30-player GTA 6 world, direct account transfer, shared progression with GTA 5, or a particular business and heist structure. GTA Online is the benchmark for what Rockstar has operated successfully; it is not evidence of a guaranteed GTA 6 feature list.
Release date, platforms and buying implications
Confirmed launch information
Rockstar lists GTA 6 for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC release date is not stated in the confirmed information available here. The platform list also means that owning GTA 5 on an older console or PC does not establish an upgrade path for GTA 6.

You can begin learning the driving, shooting and economy systems without assuming that progress will carry into GTA 6.
Wait for GTA 6 if the new setting and story are your priority
Waiting makes sense if your main interest is modern Vice City, the Leonida setting or the Jason-and-Lucia campaign. The confirmed release date gives console players a concrete target, but details such as map scale, interiors, side activities and online design remain open.

Use a two-part expectation
Treat GTA 5 as a complete, playable product and GTA 6 as an announced future release. Do not buy GTA 5 on the assumption that it includes GTA 6 content or guarantees a transfer. Conversely, do not dismiss GTA 6’s eventual online offering because Rockstar has not described it yet; the correct status is simply unannounced.

When Rockstar publishes more information, classify each statement before comparing it with GTA 5:

- Shown in a trailer: the scene establishes that Rockstar created that sequence, but not necessarily that the behavior is unrestricted or available everywhere in free roam.
- Not announced: player counts, progression transfers, map measurements, PC timing, artificial-intelligence systems, inventories and launch-day multiplayer features should remain open questions.
This distinction prevents the most common comparison error: turning a visual hint or fan interpretation into a promised feature.

Take-Two Interactive reported more than 190 million GTA 5 units sold in 2023. That figure demonstrates the reach of the existing game, but there is no comparable GTA 6 sales figure before launch. Sales of the older title also do not establish how many players GTA 6 Online will support or how its business model will work.

GTA 6’s confirmed changes are its setting and character structure: the action expands from Los Santos and Blaine County to Leonida, with Vice City at its center, and from Michael, Franklin and Trevor to Jason and Lucia. Trailers show a modern, travel-oriented crime world with driving, combat, robberies and nightlife. GTA 5 remains the reference point for a finished campaign and a 30-player online service, while GTA 6’s online design and many detailed mechanics are still not announced.
