This is a role-based recommendation for the pre-release version of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games has shown both weapon classes in promotional material, but it has not published a complete final weapon-stat table. Damage, recoil, effective range, magazine capacity, reload speed, and fire-rate comparisons therefore cannot be stated as confirmed numbers. The practical choice is about the kind of fight you expect, not a definitive statistical ranking.

The short answer: assault rifle for versatility, SMG for close quarters
An assault rifle is the safer default when you do not know what the next encounter will look like. Its conventional role is to bridge the gap between close and medium range, giving you a stable platform for deliberate fire across streets, parking lots, yards, and other open sightlines. If a mission moves between outdoor and indoor spaces, the rifle is less likely to leave you badly mismatched to the encounter.
An SMG is the specialist choice for aggressive close-range play. Its conventional role favors compact spaces, rapid movement, and fighting at short distances where a compact automatic weapon can be brought on target quickly. It is the more natural choice for room-to-room pushes, vehicle-adjacent fights, alleys, and any situation in which you can force the distance in your favor.

Those distinctions describe weapon-class conventions, not published GTA VI statistics. Rockstar may tune the final game differently, so treat the table below as a decision guide rather than a claim about unreleased damage or recoil values.

What Rockstar has actually confirmed
Rockstar’s official Grand Theft Auto VI product page places the game in Vice City, lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, and displays the release wording “Coming November 19, 2026.” That is the announced launch information; it is not evidence that a PC version or additional platforms will be available on the same date.
Released promotional footage and screenshots have shown firearms that PC Gamer described as an “AK-47-inspired assault rifle” and an “MP5-style SMG.” Those descriptions identify the visual inspirations visible in the material, not confirmed in-game names. Rockstar had not published a complete official weapon list in the available coverage, so it would be inaccurate to present either label as a final weapon name or to attach definitive balance data to it.
Take-Two’s official release notice records the second trailer’s release on May 6, 2025. Trailer appearances establish that both assault-rifle and SMG classes are part of the promotional picture, but a trailer cannot establish final damage, recoil, range, magazine, reload, or fire-rate values.

What is not published yet
No authoritative source in the available material supplies a final GTA VI assault-rifle-versus-SMG stat sheet. In particular, there are no confirmed numerical values for:
- Per-shot or per-burst damage
- Headshot multipliers
- Falloff distance and maximum effective range
- Vertical or horizontal recoil
- Rounds per magazine
- Rate of fire
- Reload duration
- Movement penalties while aiming or firing
Any guide that assigns exact numbers to those categories before Rockstar or reliable launch testing publishes them is presenting speculation as fact. The recommendations in this article stay at the class and encounter level for that reason.
Why an assault rifle is the better all-round pick
The assault rifle’s advantage is coverage. Medium-range fights often give you enough distance that precise target placement matters, while still requiring enough volume of fire to deal with more than one opponent. A rifle-class weapon conventionally occupies that middle ground: more reach and stability than a close-quarters specialist, without requiring the deliberate pacing associated with a precision weapon.
Choose the rifle for open sightlines
Use the rifle when enemies can appear across a street, between buildings, across a lot, or on the far side of a courtyard. Open sightlines give you time to aim and make the rifle’s expected stability and reach more valuable than the SMG’s compact handling. You can maintain pressure without first exposing yourself to close the gap.

Choose the rifle when the mission is unpredictable
Some missions change location or encounter distance quickly. A chase can end in an open road, move through a parking area, and finish inside a building. If you cannot predict the next engagement, the rifle is the lower-risk primary because it is less dependent on a single distance band. You may still want a close-range backup, but the rifle gives you a credible answer before you know what is coming.
Choose the rifle for controlled sustained fire
When the target is partially exposed or moving laterally at medium distance, controlled fire is generally easier with a rifle-class platform than with a weapon optimized for very short engagements. Fire in manageable bursts if the game’s final recoil model rewards that approach, and use cover to reset your aim between engagements. Do not assume a particular burst length or recoil pattern until launch testing establishes it.
Rifle trade-offs
- Less specialized indoors: In a tiny room or narrow stairwell, a compact SMG may be easier to maneuver.
- Potentially slower handling: Assault rifles are commonly designed around reach and stability rather than the fastest possible ready or movement behavior, but GTA VI’s final handling values are unknown.
- More discipline at close range: If an opponent is already within arm’s reach, the rifle’s general-purpose design may not compensate for poor positioning.

The SMG’s advantage is immediacy. Its conventional role is to let a player move, turn, and apply automatic fire quickly in spaces where targets appear at short distance. If your plan is to keep pressure on an enemy rather than hold a long sightline, the SMG fits that plan better.

Confined spaces reduce the rifle’s reach advantage. In rooms, hallways, stairwells, garages, and narrow alleys, targets can appear suddenly and leave little time for careful alignment. An SMG is the natural class to test first for those encounters because compact automatic weapons are generally built around fast close-range response.

Choose the SMG when you control the distance
The SMG becomes more attractive when you can approach under cover, use corners, or force an opponent into a short lane. Closing distance removes the rifle’s main comparative advantage. Once the fight is close, quick target transitions and movement can matter more than the ability to reach farther across an open area.
Choose the SMG for an aggressive movement style
Players who push rather than hold angles will usually get more value from a close-range specialist. Move between cover, enter on a favorable angle, and avoid challenging distant opponents on their terms. The SMG is not a reason to sprint into every fight; it is a reason to structure the fight so that its intended range is the one that occurs.

- Weaker fit for open ground: A long street or wide lot can expose the SMG’s likely range limitation.

A practical decision process before each fight
- Estimate the first contact distance. Look at the next visible lane, doorway, street, or courtyard. If the first target is likely to be far enough away that you need a clear sight picture, lean toward the assault rifle.
- Check whether the route compresses the fight. A narrow interior, alley, or stairwell reduces the value of reach and increases the value of quick handling. That is a reason to favor the SMG.
- Ask whether you can safely close the gap. An SMG is strongest when cover, corners, vehicles, or level geometry let you approach without crossing an exposed area.
- Account for the next phase, not only the first target. If an indoor doorway leads immediately to an open street, the assault rifle may be the better overall choice even if the first enemy is nearby.
- Keep the role distinction separate from the weapon’s appearance. A gun that resembles a familiar real-world model is not proof that it has the same performance in GTA VI. Use the encounter role until official or reliable in-game testing provides actual values.
How to play each class effectively
Assault-rifle habits
- Use cover that lets you expose only the amount of body needed to aim.
- Prioritize the most distant or most dangerous visible target before allowing enemies to collapse the distance.
- Favor controlled fire when the target is small on screen or moving across a long sightline.
- Relocate after an engagement if the game’s enemy behavior makes your position predictable.
- Do not chase a close target into a cramped space simply because the rifle is already equipped; change the geometry or change the weapon when that is safer.
SMG habits
- Use corners, doorframes, vehicles, and interior cover to keep the fight short.
- Move decisively between cover rather than standing in the open and trying to compensate for limited reach.
- Break line of sight after a push so you can reload or reset your aim without inviting a long-range duel.
- Look for routes that let you attack from the side instead of approaching across a wide exposed area.
- Do not treat close-range specialization as permission to ignore spacing; an SMG still needs a favorable engagement distance.
Is either class the “best gun” in GTA 6?
There is no evidence for a single universal winner before launch. “Best” depends on whether the player values range coverage or close-range pressure. If the question means “Which class should I equip when I only want one dependable option?”, the assault rifle is the stronger answer because it is designed to cover more encounter types. If the question means “Which class should I use for the fastest, most aggressive indoor fights?”, the SMG is the better answer.

This distinction also prevents a common mistake: judging a weapon outside its intended role. An SMG may feel excellent in a hallway and poor across a boulevard; that is not necessarily a balance problem. An assault rifle may feel dependable in an open area and less convenient in a tiny room; that is the trade-off that makes the classes meaningfully different.
What to verify after release
Once GTA VI is available, a useful comparison should replace class expectations with repeatable measurements. Look for testing that identifies the exact in-game weapon, platform and mode, and the conditions under which each result was recorded.
Important measurements
- Damage by body region and distance
- Shots required to defeat an enemy at several ranges
- Damage falloff start and end points
- Recoil direction, recovery, and accuracy while moving
- Magazine size, reload time, and reserve ammunition
- Rate of fire and time to defeat a target
- Aiming, sprint-to-fire, and weapon-swap behavior
- Any differences between story mode and online play
Those measurements should be reported with the game version and platform because patches can change balance. A post-launch winner may therefore be temporary rather than a permanent rule.

Rockstar’s product page currently lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and shows “Coming November 19, 2026.” The available announcement does not establish a same-day PC release, so PC players should not assume one from the console listing.
Rockstar Customer Support states: “The physical version of GTAVI will contain a download code for the digital download.” That means a buyer choosing a physical edition should understand what is in the box before purchasing: the physical product is documented as containing a code for the digital download, rather than being evidence of a traditional game disc with the complete installation.
How this recommendation should change over time
Before launch, use the assault rifle as the general-purpose answer and the SMG as the close-quarters answer. After launch, keep the same decision framework but replace assumptions with verified numbers. If testing shows that one class has unusually strong range, recoil control, or damage in a particular mode, update the recommendation for that mode rather than declaring the other class useless everywhere.
For now, the cleanest loadout logic is simple: take the assault rifle when mission conditions are uncertain or sightlines are open; take the SMG when you can keep encounters compact and aggressive. Neither choice requires pretending that Rockstar has published statistics it has not released.
