GTA 6 age rating (Mature 17+) and parental controls on PS5 and Xbox

Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the US Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB). The rating lists Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, Use of Drugs and Alcohol, and In-Game Purchases. That combination is official guidance for adults and older teens, not children, so GTA 6 is not an age-appropriate choice for most 13-year-olds.

Rockstar Games lists the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026. Both consoles provide age-based blocking, but their menus and exception features differ. Set restrictions on a child account before the game is installed or purchased, and treat spending and online communication as separate controls from the launch block.

What age rating is GTA 6?

The ESRB’s US rating record classifies Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+. The rating is the published age guidance for the United States; it is not a survey result, a prediction of how every family will react, or a legal statement that every 17-year-old is ready for the game.

The ESRB’s wording is: “Grand Theft Auto VI is rated M for Mature 17+ by the ESRB with Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Mature Humor, Nudity, Strong Language, Strong Sexual Content, and Use of Drugs and Alcohol.” The same record also identifies In-Game Purchases, which adds a financial-control issue even if a child cannot launch the game.

Rockstar’s product page states, “Coming November 19, 2026.” The rating and release information above should be read as US and publisher information respectively. A stable official PEGI entry was not available in the cited material, so do not present a definitive PEGI 18 classification as fact. Families outside the United States should check the rating board used in their country when its record is published.

Is GTA 6 suitable for a 13-year-old?

Under the ESRB’s guidance, no: an M 17+ game is intended for players aged 17 and older. GTA 6 combines several high-intensity categories rather than relying on a single mild descriptor. Intense violence appears alongside blood and gore; strong sexual content and nudity appear alongside drug and alcohol use; strong language and mature humor are also listed. That is substantially different from a game rated for early or mid-teens.

Parental supervision can help a family discuss media, but it does not change the official rating or remove the content. Watching a trailer, checking a setting, or allowing only short sessions cannot guarantee that a 13-year-old will avoid the listed material. If your household permits access despite the rating, make that a deliberate family decision after reviewing each descriptor, the child’s maturity, and the possibility of online interaction and spending.

A practical family decision checklist

  • Read all eight ESRB descriptors, not just the M symbol.
  • Decide whether your child should encounter sexual content, nudity, drug and alcohol references, intense violence, and strong language at all.
  • Separate access from spending: the game can be blocked while an account still needs a purchase limit.
  • Consider online communication and user-generated content as additional risks that require their own settings.
  • Agree on who can approve an exception, what happens if a child receives an exception request, and how the decision will be reviewed after launch.

No independent numeric study or age-outcome statistic establishes a different age threshold. The 17+ recommendation in this article is an explanation of the ESRB record, not a new rating.

What the GTA 6 descriptors cover

Descriptors are short labels that identify the types of content considered relevant to the rating. They are not a complete scene-by-scene guide, and the exact presentation can vary during play.

Descriptor Family relevance
Blood and Gore Depictions of blood and graphic injury are part of the rating basis.
Intense Violence Violent actions are characterized by the ESRB as intense rather than merely cartoon or incidental.
Mature Humor Humor is aimed at a mature audience and may be unsuitable for children.
Nudity Nude imagery is specifically identified.
Strong Language The rating includes frequent or emphatic profanity at a strong level.
Strong Sexual Content Sexual material is identified as strong, not merely a brief reference.
Use of Drugs and Alcohol Drug and alcohol use appears as content in the game.
In-Game Purchases The game can involve purchases made through the game or its platform ecosystem; spending controls are therefore important.

How to block GTA 6 on PlayStation 5

PlayStation’s controls are tied to family accounts. A family manager can use the PlayStation Family app or the console path Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management. Create or use a child account with the child’s correct date of birth before applying restrictions; age settings are based on that account information.

Set an age gate before release

  1. Sign in on the PS5 as the family manager and open Settings.
  2. Select Family and Parental Controls, then Family Management.
  3. Choose the child account, or add the child account if it is not already in the family.
  4. Open the controls for games and apps and set the allowed age level below the ESRB M/17+ category.
  5. Review the setting on the child account and keep the family-manager sign-in protected so the restriction cannot be changed casually.

With an age level below M/17+, the child account should not be able to launch a game assigned that rating. PlayStation’s family controls also filter age-appropriate content in the PlayStation Store, helping prevent a child from purchasing or downloading a blocked title through the store.

Use Allowed Games and exception requests

PS5 supports Allowed Games and per-game exception requests. If a blocked game is selected, the child can request an exception; the parent or guardian can approve or deny that request. Do not approve an exception simply because the game has already been downloaded: the exception changes access for that child account.

Account-linked settings apply across the family’s connected devices. Check which account is signed in before testing the restriction, particularly in a household where adults and children share a console.

Control play time and communication

In the same family-management area, PS5 documents playtime schedules and daily playtime changes. Set the schedule separately from the game-age level so a permitted title still stops at the agreed time.

For online play, review Communication and User-Generated Content restrictions and age filtering for online content. These controls address messaging, other players’ content, and related interactions; they do not turn an M-rated game into a child-rated game.

Prevent unwanted purchases

  1. Open the child’s family-management controls.
  2. Set a monthly spending limit. Use zero when the child should not make purchases.
  3. Keep purchase approval with the family manager and review any payment method attached to the family.
  4. Enable the account and notification options that alert the family manager when the child account is funded or a purchase requires attention.

The ESRB’s PS5 guidance specifically notes family-manager notifications when a child account is funded and supports Game Requests and Allowed Games. A spending limit is still necessary because the M rating record separately flags in-game purchases.

How to block GTA 6 on Xbox Series X|S

Xbox uses a numerical age scale aligned with the ESRB and other content-rating systems. The cited Xbox family guidance places the relevant controls under Settings > Privacy and online safety. Use a child account and choose an age level below the game’s M/17+ classification.

Set the Xbox content restriction

  1. Sign in with the parent or family-organizer account.
  2. Open Settings, then Privacy and online safety.
  3. Select the child account and open the content restriction or family-safety options.
  4. Choose the numerical age level below the level corresponding to M/17+.
  5. Save the change and test access while signed in as the child, not the parent.

The Xbox guide establishes rating-based blocking across Xbox consoles, including Xbox Series X|S. A child account set below the game’s rating should be prevented from accessing it. Keep the parent account protected with its own sign-in security; otherwise a child who can use the unrestricted account may bypass the child profile’s limits.

Review privacy and online safety

Xbox handles communication and online interactions through the same Privacy and online safety area. Review multiplayer, messaging, friend requests, and user-generated-content permissions for the child account. The available material confirms the rating-based controls and the settings path, but it does not document every GTA VI-specific online feature before launch, so revisit these permissions after the game’s online services are available.

Do not assume the Xbox rating gate is a complete time-management plan. Verify the current Xbox Family Safety interface for playtime limits rather than applying a PlayStation menu path to Xbox.

Device scope Family settings are account-linked across connected devices. Rating controls apply across Xbox consoles according to the cited guidance.

Prepare for launch without accidental access

Rockstar currently lists GTA VI for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S with the November 19, 2026 release date. Before that date, complete the account setup rather than waiting until installation day.

  • Confirm the child’s date of birth and that the child is using a child account.
  • Set the game-age level below M/17+ and test it from the child profile.
  • Protect the parent or family-manager account with a separate sign-in and do not leave it logged in for unrestricted play.
  • Set spending to the amount your household actually permits, including zero where appropriate.
  • Restrict communication and user-generated content if online interaction is not appropriate.
  • On PS5, decide in advance whether exception requests will always be denied or reviewed individually.
  • Recheck controls after a console, account, or game update; menu labels and online features can change.

These platform controls govern the console account. They do not guarantee that every linked third-party online service follows the same age policy, so review any separate account or service connected to gameplay.
