Rockstar has not explicitly confirmed GTA 5’s canon ending in the official announcement reviewed here. A December 2025 report argues that later GTA Online story details point to Deathwish, the finale in which Franklin, Michael and Trevor survive. That makes Deathwish appear consistent with the reported continuity—not an ending Rockstar has officially declared canonical.
What is the canon ending of GTA 5?
The available evidence points to Deathwish as the ending that best fits the later story described in GTA Online, but it does not establish an official Rockstar ruling. The distinction matters: a story detail can support an interpretation without the publisher explicitly confirming it.

Rockstar’s announcement says that GTA Online: A Safehouse in the Hills was scheduled to arrive on December 10, 2025. The announcement does not name a canonical GTA 5 ending: Rockstar’s update announcement.
Why does the update point toward Deathwish?
In its December 10, 2025 report, the Times of Bangladesh says the update brings Michael De Santa into GTA Online’s present timeline and includes dialogue indicating Trevor Philips is alive. The report also says Michael is pursuing film production and remains with Amanda. These are details reported by that outlet; the Rockstar announcement does not independently confirm them.

- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
The report’s reasoning is about continuity: if Michael and Trevor are both alive after the events of GTA 5, that fits Deathwish, the finale in which all three protagonists survive. It does not fit either finale that ends with one of them dead. The conclusion that Deathwish is canon is therefore an inference from the reported later appearances, not a direct Rockstar statement. Read the Times of Bangladesh report.
How the three GTA 5 endings differ
The report describes three finale choices for Franklin. Their implications for the protagonists’ survival—and their fit with the later GTA Online story it reports—are:
Rank #2
- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
| Finale choice | Who survives, according to the report | Fit with reported GTA Online continuity |
|---|---|---|
| Kill Trevor | Trevor dies; Franklin and Michael survive. | Does not fit the report’s claim that dialogue indicates Trevor is alive. |
| Kill Michael | Michael dies; Franklin and Trevor survive. | Does not fit the report’s account of Michael appearing in the present timeline. |
| Deathwish | Franklin, Michael and Trevor survive. | Fits the report’s account of both Michael and Trevor being alive. |
The table reflects the choices and continuity described in the report; it should not be read as Rockstar’s official canon ruling.

The update report describes later story continuity; it does not establish that GTA Online changes the ending selected in an individual player’s GTA 5 save. It also does not show that the update’s story has a direct effect on GTA 6. The confirmed connection to the next game in the evidence here is timing: the update was announced ahead of GTA 6, not as a statement about its plot.
