San Andreas has the better dedicated jetpack. Its jetpack is a defining part of the single-player sandbox, so it delivers the clearest personal-flight fantasy. GTA V has the better overall gameplay package if you want three protagonists, real-time character switching, heists, richer aircraft activities, skill progression, modern controls and an evolving multiplayer world. The right choice depends on whether your priority is a memorable classic feature or broader, newer systems.
The short answer: choose by the kind of gameplay you want
In a straight GTA 5 vs GTA San Andreas decision, neither game wins every category. San Andreas is the stronger answer to “which game has the better jetpack?” because the jetpack is central to its identity as a personal-flight sandbox. You can treat it as a signature vehicle and build free-roaming experimentation around it.

GTA V is the stronger choice for breadth. Its manual describes three playable protagonists—Michael, Franklin and Trevor—with separate lives that can be explored away from missions. You can switch between them in real time, and many missions involve two or three characters. Their statistics also improve through experience. That structure supports more varied mission setups than a single-character campaign.

Flying and Pilot School can improve that skill. In GTA Online, Rockstar later added the Thruster jetpack to an aerial adversary mode, where it uses missiles and a cannon. That is a meaningful jetpack option, but it belongs to Online content and is not equivalent to San Andreas’s classic jetpack-centered single-player experience.

Jetpack comparison: San Andreas versus GTA V
Why San Andreas wins the dedicated jetpack question
San Andreas treats the jetpack as one of its most recognizable tools for exploring the world. It changes how you approach distance, terrain and mission spaces: instead of following roads or finding a runway, you can rise directly into the air and move through the environment under your own control. That makes the vehicle feel like a playstyle, not merely another item in a garage.
The important advantage is centrality. The game is widely associated with its jetpack, and the vehicle fits the classic single-player sandbox where experimentation is the reward. You can use it to reach places from unusual angles, scout an area before committing to a route and create your own aerial challenges while roaming. Those uses are qualitative strengths; Rockstar’s official material does not publish a controlled head-to-head benchmark for speed, altitude, range or fuel, so there is no reliable number-based claim that San Andreas’s jetpack is faster or has a longer flight time.
For a player asking “is San Andreas better for jetpack gameplay?”, the answer is yes when “better” means more focused, more memorable and more naturally integrated into a solo sandbox. The vehicle is the reason many players choose San Andreas over a newer entry, even when they know GTA V has more systems overall.

What GTA V actually offers in the air
GTA V’s official manual documents conventional aircraft controls and several types of aircraft activity. You can take part in air races, fly light planes, use helicopters and pilot personal jets. The P-996 Lazer is specifically used for jet-based air races, giving the game a substantial military-jet component even without making a personal jetpack the center of Story Mode.
The difference is that GTA V’s aircraft are organized as a broader aviation system. Planes and helicopters support races, travel and mission objectives, while flying skill affects performance. You can develop that skill by flying and through Pilot School. This gives GTA V more progression around aviation, but it does not recreate the same compact personal-flight fantasy as San Andreas’s jetpack.
The Thruster: a jetpack, but in GTA Online
Rockstar’s GTA Online update notes refer to the Thruster, a jetpack used in an aerial adversary mode with missile and cannon combat. It gives GTA V a genuine jetpack-like vehicle, yet the context matters:
Rank #2
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile. Grand Theft Auto returns with Tommy Vercetti’s tale of betrayal and revenge in a neon-soaked tropical town full of excess and brimming with possibilities.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl ‘CJ’ Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption. Now, it's the early 90s. CJ’s got to go home - his mother has been murdered, his family has fallen apart, and his childhood friends are all heading towards disaster.
- The Thruster reference is for GTA Online, not a claim that Story Mode is built around a jetpack.
- It appears within an online combat activity, so its role is closer to a specialized multiplayer vehicle than to San Andreas’s iconic solo exploration tool.
- Its missiles and cannon make it useful for aerial combat, while San Andreas’s appeal is the freedom to use a jetpack as a general-purpose way to move around the world.
That distinction prevents a common comparison error. Saying “GTA V has a jetpack” is technically incomplete unless you specify the Thruster and GTA Online. If your purchase decision is based on a jetpack for an offline campaign, San Andreas remains the clearer fit.
Jetpack feel: what can and cannot be claimed
There is no official controlled test in the available material that measures both games under identical conditions. Avoid treating community impressions as a verified speed, altitude or fuel comparison. A useful qualitative distinction is enough:
| Jetpack question | San Andreas | GTA V |
|---|---|---|
| Is a personal jetpack a defining part of the game? | Yes; it is one of the title’s signature sandbox features. | No in Story Mode; the relevant jetpack-like vehicle is the Thruster in GTA Online content. |
| Best use case | Solo exploration, experimentation and direct personal flight. | Online aerial combat when using the Thruster, plus a broad aircraft system in Story Mode and Online. |
| Official speed, altitude or fuel benchmark | Not stated in the cited official material. | Not stated in the cited official material. |
| Overall jetpack verdict | Winner for a dedicated jetpack experience. | More modern context, but less central to the game’s identity. |
Mission structure and character gameplay
GTA V: three protagonists and real-time switching
GTA V’s campaign is designed around Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Each has a separate life that can be explored outside missions, and the game lets you switch between them in real time. Missions may involve two or all three characters, allowing the design to change perspective and role during a single operation.
This structure creates variety in several ways:
- Different viewpoints: a situation can be approached through more than one character’s abilities and position.
- Role changes during missions: switching can move you from driving to shooting, flying or supporting another character.
- Independent free-roam activities: each protagonist has a life outside the main mission chain, so the world is not experienced only through one avatar.
- Character-stat progression: the protagonists’ statistics improve with experience, giving repeated activities a mechanical purpose.
If you value heist-style planning, set pieces that alternate between characters and a campaign with several playable viewpoints, GTA V is the stronger game. Its design spends more of its budget on mission orchestration and switching than San Andreas does.
San Andreas: a more focused classic sandbox
San Andreas is the better match for a player who wants one central character and a more direct relationship with the world. Its appeal comes from the combination of open-ended roaming, recognizable activities and standout features such as the jetpack. The experience feels less like a service that is constantly expanding and more like a self-contained single-player playground.
Recommended Free Tools
That focus can be an advantage. You are less likely to pause and ask which protagonist, online mode or progression track to use; the sandbox’s distinctive tools are the point. If you want the jetpack to define your play sessions rather than serve as one option among many, San Andreas has the cleaner design.

Aircraft depth and flying progression
GTA V’s aircraft classes and activities
GTA V treats aviation as a substantial part of its activity set. The manual covers light planes, personal jets and helicopters, while air races provide a structured way to use them. The P-996 Lazer is associated with jet air races, so players who want conventional aircraft have more than a single novelty vehicle to master.
Flying skill matters mechanically. The manual says that better flying skill affects aircraft performance, and you can improve it by flying or attending Pilot School. That creates a progression loop:
- Start with the aircraft and activities available to your character or account.
- Spend time flying to build the relevant skill.
- Use Pilot School for structured practice and additional improvement.
- Return to air races or missions with a more capable pilot and better control.
This system rewards players who want to improve at aviation rather than simply spawn a vehicle and ignore progression. Later Rockstar updates also documented changes involving the Lazer and Hydra, including cannon and VTOL adjustments. Those updates show that GTA V’s aircraft roster and handling rules have evolved over time, particularly in the online ecosystem.
San Andreas’s jetpack-first fantasy
San Andreas does not need a comparable aviation progression tree to succeed at its main promise. Its jetpack is compelling because it compresses the distance between the player and the sky. You do not need to select a runway, learn a conventional aircraft class or build a pilot profile before enjoying personal flight.
That simplicity is exactly why the two games should not be judged only by the number of aircraft. GTA V has more explicit aircraft categories and progression, while San Andreas delivers a more immediate and memorable flight tool. One is aviation breadth; the other is personal-flight focus.
Single-player sandbox versus an evolving online world
What GTA V adds through GTA Online
Rockstar describes GTA Online as “a dynamic and ever-evolving online universe for up to 30 players.” The product includes gameplay upgrades, expansions and content released since launch. This service model changes the value proposition: GTA V is not only a campaign with aircraft, but also an online environment that can continue to receive activities and vehicles.
Rank #4
For the comparison, separate the two modes before deciding:
- Story Mode: the three-protagonist campaign, switching system, character statistics, missions and aircraft activities.
- GTA Online: the multiplayer world, ongoing updates and the Thruster jetpack content referenced in Rockstar’s update notes.
If you want to play with other people, build a long-term online character and sample new activities as they arrive, GTA V has a clear advantage. The same service model can feel less focused than San Andreas, however. You may spend more time managing online progression and activities than simply roaming with a jetpack.
Why San Andreas remains attractive offline
San Andreas is easier to understand as a self-contained purchase. Its strongest feature does not depend on a current online population, an update schedule or a particular multiplayer mode. You can choose it specifically for the classic sandbox and jetpack, then play on your own terms.
That makes San Andreas especially suitable for players who want:
- A campaign-centered experience without an online service requirement.
- A memorable vehicle that changes free-roam movement immediately.
- A straightforward answer to “is San Andreas better for jetpack gameplay?”
- A game whose value is not tied to how much new multiplayer content is available.
Controls, presentation and edition choices
Original San Andreas versus The Definitive Edition
Rockstar’s Trilogy – The Definitive Edition includes San Andreas and advertises updated lighting, environmental upgrades, higher-resolution textures, increased draw distances and GTA V-style controls and targeting. Those changes matter if you like San Andreas’s jetpack concept but want a more modern presentation and control scheme.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe collection is the direct product path for obtaining San Andreas as part of a trilogy. It does not turn the game into GTA V: the mission structure, character design and jetpack-centered sandbox remain those of San Andreas. The modernization primarily affects visual presentation and interaction conventions.

What “modern controls” changes in practice
GTA V’s control language is the reference point for the updated San Andreas edition. A player accustomed to GTA V may find the remastered targeting and controls easier to approach than the original release’s conventions. That can reduce the friction of moving between the games, but it does not erase their different pacing or systems.
Platform-specific button layouts can differ, so use the control display for your edition rather than relying on a universal button list. The important buying question is whether you want the original feel or the collection’s updated handling and visual treatment.
GTA V’s current-generation and online context
GTA V benefits from a newer overall design, including real-time switching, stat progression and a broader aircraft system. Its online component is also designed as an evolving product rather than a fixed campaign. If your priority is contemporary systems and multiplayer variety, those differences are more important than the presence of a jetpack in either game.
Decision guide: which one should you buy?
Choose San Andreas or the San Andreas Trilogy if…
- Your main question is “which game has the better jetpack?”
- You want a jetpack to be central to solo exploration rather than a specialized online combat vehicle.
- You prefer a focused classic sandbox over a larger mission-and-service ecosystem.
- You want a self-contained game that does not depend on an evolving multiplayer environment.
- You are comfortable with older mission design, or you specifically want the Definitive Edition’s updated controls and presentation.
Choose GTA V if…
- You want three protagonists and real-time switching.
- You prefer missions that use multiple characters and support heist-style variety.
- You want aircraft categories, air races, Pilot School and flying-skill progression.
- You plan to play with others in GTA Online.
- You want access to the Thruster jetpack in its Online aerial-combat context, understanding that it is not a Story Mode equivalent to San Andreas’s classic jetpack.
Choose both if your priorities are different
The games complement rather than replace one another. San Andreas covers the focused jetpack fantasy; GTA V covers modern mission structure, aviation progression and online play. If you enjoy both classic and modern open-world design, owning both gives you a useful contrast: one game makes a single vehicle feel like the star, while the other spreads its depth across characters, aircraft, missions and a multiplayer service.
Common comparison mistakes
Counting the Thruster as a Story Mode feature
The Thruster belongs to GTA Online content in the cited Rockstar update notes. Do not buy GTA V expecting its offline campaign to be organized around a jetpack in the same way as San Andreas.
Using aircraft count as a jetpack score
GTA V’s larger aircraft system makes it the deeper aviation game, but aircraft breadth is not the same as jetpack quality. A player who wants personal flight may still prefer San Andreas because the jetpack is more central and immediately usable as a sandbox tool.
Expecting a verified speed or fuel winner
Rockstar’s official material does not provide a controlled benchmark for jetpack speed, altitude, range or fuel in these games. Qualitative fit is the defensible way to choose; avoid treating an unverified number as an official comparison.
Assuming the Definitive Edition changes the game into GTA V
The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition updates lighting, environments, textures, draw distance, controls and targeting. It does not replace San Andreas’s campaign structure with GTA V’s three-protagonist system or online universe.
Final verdict by category
| Category | Winner | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated jetpack experience | San Andreas | The jetpack is a defining personal-flight feature in the single-player sandbox. |
| Mission variety | GTA V | Three protagonists, real-time switching and missions involving multiple characters create more structural variety. |
| Aircraft depth | GTA V | Air races, light aircraft, jets, helicopters, flying skill and Pilot School provide a broader aviation system. |
| Offline focus | San Andreas | Its appeal is concentrated in a classic, self-contained sandbox. |
| Multiplayer and ongoing content | GTA V | GTA Online is described by Rockstar as an evolving universe for up to 30 players with continuing updates and expansions. |
| Modernized San Andreas presentation | Trilogy – The Definitive Edition | It includes updated lighting, environmental upgrades, high-resolution textures, increased draw distances and GTA V-style controls and targeting. |
Overall: San Andreas is the better answer for a dedicated jetpack game, while GTA V is the better all-around gameplay package. Buy San Andreas—or the Trilogy – The Definitive Edition if you want its modernization—for focused jetpack freedom. Buy GTA V for the broader campaign, aircraft progression and GTA Online. If you want both experiences, they serve different purposes rather than competing for exactly the same kind of play.
