GTA V remains the three-protagonist Los Santos game released in 2013. GTA VI moves to Jason and Lucia, Vice City and the wider state of Leonida, with a reported world roughly twice GTA V’s size and substantially more detailed weather, wildlife, interiors and police behavior. GTA VI is scheduled for November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

Story and protagonist structure
GTA V’s three-character format
GTA V built its campaign around three switchable protagonists: Michael De Santa, Franklin Clinton and Trevor Philips. Missions often let you change characters during a set piece, creating simultaneous viewpoints and contrasting abilities. The story is centered on Los Santos, with the surrounding Blaine County countryside providing a second major environment.

GTA VI reduces the central cast to two protagonists, Jason and Lucia. Rockstar’s official synopsis says an easy score goes wrong and places the pair in a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida, forcing them to rely on one another. The relationship is therefore part of the campaign’s premise rather than simply a menu choice between unrelated characters.
#1 Best Overall
Rockstar has described controlling either character during robberies. You can reportedly separate Jason and Lucia to divide police attention, then reunite them when the plan requires it. That creates mission possibilities that are different from GTA V’s three-way switching: instead of rotating among three independent storylines, the emphasis is on coordinated partners whose positions and risk can diverge during the same job.
Map, setting and traversal
From Los Santos to an entire Leonida state
GTA V’s fictional Los Santos is a dense city surrounded by desert, mountains, farmland and smaller settlements. GTA VI returns to Vice City, the neon coastal metropolis first used as the setting of 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, but expands the setting to the fictional state of Leonida.
Reporting based on Game Informer interviews with Rockstar identifies six primary regions in Leonida:
- Vice City: the main urban and coastal center.
- The Leonida Keys: island environments south of the mainland.
- Grassrivers: wetland and rural terrain.
- Port Gellhorn: a separate port and coastal area.
- Ambrosia: another developed region beyond the central city.
- Mount Kalaga National Park: mountainous natural terrain.
TechRadar reports that Rockstar characterizes the overall world as roughly twice the size of GTA V’s world, with higher population and interactivity. Rockstar’s public GTA VI page does not provide a measured square-mile figure, so “roughly twice as large” is the defensible comparison. Fan-made map measurements or leaked layouts should not be treated as final specifications.
Density matters as much as area
A larger map does not automatically mean a longer drive between useful locations. Rockstar’s Aaron Garbut said the team worked on rooftops, alleys, interiors and the spaces between them until the number of interiors reached what he called a critical mass. The goal is a world that feels coherent inside and out, not a large backdrop filled mainly with empty roads.
For players, that suggests a denser travel loop: urban streets, buildings, back alleys, rooftops, countryside, wetlands and coastlines should connect as parts of one state. It also means the practical difference from GTA V may be felt through how many places can be entered or used during a chase, robbery or exploration session, rather than through land area alone.
Police pursuits and the reported Heat system
How GTA V usually handles wanted levels
In GTA V, committing crimes raises a star-based wanted level. Police and other agencies pursue the player, and escaping generally means breaking line of sight, leaving the search area and avoiding detection until the wanted level disappears. Vehicles, terrain and character switching can all help, but the system mostly evaluates what the player is doing in the moment.

GTA VI’s appearance and vehicle clues
Coverage of Rockstar’s GTA VI material describes a six-star wanted system alongside a Heat mechanic that gives police more persistent clues. Officers can reportedly use clothing, hairstyle and the getaway vehicle to identify suspects. Changing an outfit or abandoning a recognizable vehicle can therefore become part of escaping, rather than merely cosmetic customization.
This changes the decision after a robbery. Running directly to the nearest safe spot may be less reliable if witnesses or cameras can associate a description with Jason or Lucia. A player may need to plan a disguise, switch cars, or split the protagonists so that one draws attention while the other reaches an escape route. Rockstar has not published a complete rulebook for Heat, so the exact detection ranges, cooldown behavior and mission restrictions remain unknown.
Weather and environmental simulation
Localized, persistent weather
Rockstar vice president of art for lighting and rendering Owen Shepherd said the studio re-engineered its weather system to make conditions more localized and persistent. In the reported examples, rain can leave puddles, create rainbows and change lighting, while dynamic cloudscapes produce different conditions across the same world.
Compared with GTA V’s broad weather changes, the important expected difference is continuity. A storm in one part of Leonida may not make every neighborhood look identical, and wet surfaces can remain after rainfall instead of disappearing immediately. Lighting changes should affect how streets, interiors and vehicles appear, although Rockstar has not published a complete list of gameplay effects such as braking distances or weapon accuracy in rain.

- Persistent puddles and changing light can alter visibility during escapes.
- Localized storms may create different conditions for Jason and Lucia when they are operating apart.
- Cloud and lighting variation should make long drives and repeated routes look less uniform.
- Any mechanical effects on traction, stealth or vehicle handling have not been formally specified.
Animals and natural habitats
Rockstar vice president of dynamic art Michael Kane said Leonida includes Florida-inspired urban, rural, aquatic and wetland ecosystems. The reported total is 170 animal species, including more than 60 bird types and more than 30 land mammals.
The count covers more than decorative wildlife in a single countryside zone. Animals are expected across city streets, rural land, inland water, ocean environments, swamps and Everglades-like wetlands. That range gives the expanded map a stronger ecological identity than simply adding more road miles, though Rockstar has not stated how many species are huntable, interactive, mission-critical or purely ambient.
NPC animation, interiors and world detail
More variation in people
TechRadar reports more than 600,000 combined NPC animations and extensive work on different body types, clothing, tattoos, hairstyles and culturally specific fashion. The practical promise is a population that looks less duplicated when you move between neighborhoods, social groups and regions.

- GTA 5 SUR PS3 / TAKE TWO - ROCKSTAR GAME
An animation total is not a guarantee that every character behaves uniquely. It is a reported development figure, and the final game may distribute those animations differently across crowds, missions and background activity. Still, it indicates a much broader animation library than a simple upgrade in texture quality.
Interiors as part of the continuous world
Garbut’s comments emphasize buildings that feel real inside and out. Rockstar says the team focused on rooftops, alleys, interiors and the connections between them. If the reported interior density reaches the promised critical mass, entering buildings should become a more regular part of exploration, evasion and mission planning rather than an occasional scripted transition.
The distinction from GTA V is therefore not just the number of accessible doors. It is whether interiors, rooftops and alleys form usable routes that connect with the street-level world. Rockstar has not published a percentage of enterable buildings, so claims that every building can be entered would be inaccurate.
Mission design and moment-to-moment play
Coordinated robberies
GTA V’s heists often used character switching to show several specialists executing a plan. GTA VI’s two-protagonist structure points toward a tighter partner model. During a robbery, Jason and Lucia can reportedly be controlled separately, allowing one to manage a police response while the other secures an exit, reaches a vehicle or handles another objective.
That setup may make positioning more important than simply selecting the character with the best weapon or driving skill. Splitting up can reduce immediate pressure, but it also risks leaving one protagonist exposed. Because the Heat system may track clothing and getaway cars, the mission’s escape phase could involve decisions about who changes appearance and which vehicle remains safe to use.

The six-region structure, weather variation, animal habitats and interior density all support activities between story missions. Urban exploration can focus on shops, alleys and rooftops; rural travel can lead through wetlands, national-park terrain and smaller communities; coastal areas add islands and aquatic environments. Rockstar has not confirmed a full side-activity list, so these are environmental opportunities rather than a promise of specific minigames.

What is confirmed
GTA VI is officially scheduled for November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Take-Two lists a $79.99 Standard Edition and says the game will be sold through the PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Rockstar Games Store and retailers worldwide.
The official sources reviewed do not announce a PC version or a PC release date. That is different from saying a PC edition will never exist; it means buyers should not assume one is available at launch until Rockstar provides platform details.

Standard and Ultimate editions
Take-Two confirms a $79.99 Standard Edition. Rockstar’s support information also lists Standard and Ultimate editions, but the reviewed material does not establish the Ultimate Edition’s price or a complete itemized list of bonuses. Check the store page for your territory before paying for an edition whose contents are not needed.
Physical box format
Rockstar Support, updated August 18, 2026, says physical GTA VI boxes contain a digital download code rather than a disc. A boxed purchase therefore still requires an internet connection, sufficient console storage and redemption through the relevant platform account. Verify whether a retailer’s listing is for a code, a box with a code or a digital purchase before checkout; packaging and regional terms can vary.
What has not been confirmed
- A PC launch date or PC edition.
- The final launch-day online mode and its exact availability.
- Post-launch expansions or a long-term content plan.
- A precise square-mile measurement for Leonida.
- Complete Ultimate Edition contents and regional pricing.
Which game is the better fit?
Choose GTA V if you want
- A finished game available across a wide range of platforms, including PC.
- Three protagonists with distinct storylines and frequent character switching.
- The familiar Los Santos map and an established online ecosystem.
- A lower-cost entry point through existing editions and sales, where available.
Wait for GTA VI if you want
- A new Vice City story built around Jason and Lucia.
- A larger, multi-region world spanning Leonida.
- More consequential police evasion through Heat, disguises and vehicle changes.
- Persistent localized weather, richer interiors, broader wildlife and denser NPC animation.
- A current-generation console experience on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
GTA V is the known quantity: a complete three-protagonist crime epic with a mature platform history. GTA VI is the more ambitious technical and systemic step, but some launch details remain open until Rockstar publishes final specifications. For a new purchase before November 19, 2026, GTA V is the immediately playable option; for the expanded Vice City-and-Leonida design, you need to wait for GTA VI’s confirmed launch platforms.
Bottom line
GTA VI is not simply GTA V with a new city. Its defining changes are the Jason-and-Lucia partnership, the reported Leonida world at roughly twice GTA V’s scale, a more investigative Heat pursuit model, localized persistent weather, 170 reported animal species, denser NPC animation and a stronger interior-and-rooftop focus. Buy or keep GTA V for its established three-character Los Santos structure; choose PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S for GTA VI based on your existing ecosystem, because no meaningful platform-exclusive difference has been announced.
