For the widest vehicle selection, a PC Story Mode trainer is the best choice. Script Hook V loads ASI plugins such as its bundled Native Trainer, while PC Trainer V (Official) advertises spawning every available vehicle model, including DLC vehicles. Built-in cheat codes are faster because they require no installation, but they offer only a small, preset selection. Director Mode is the better tool for filming repeatable scenes because it controls actors, cameras and environmental conditions rather than acting as a general vehicle menu.
All three methods are separate from GTA Online. Use trainers only in offline Story Mode, and remove or disable mod files before entering Online.

What each GTA 5 vehicle method actually does
Vehicle trainers: broad selection and sandbox control on PC
A vehicle trainer is a third-party Story Mode utility loaded through Script Hook V. Script Hook V is the library that allows custom .asi plugins to use GTA V script-native functions. Its bundled Native Trainer includes a vehicle car-spawner. PC Trainer V (Official) advertises spawning all available vehicle models, including downloadable-content models.

That makes a trainer the closest option to a full vehicle catalogue. You can generally browse a large model list, create vehicles repeatedly and experiment without remembering individual cheat strings. The exact menu layout, hotkey and features depend on the trainer and its version, so read the documentation that accompanies the build you install.

Trainers are PC tools. They require a compatible PC installation, Script Hook V or equivalent ASI support, and files that match your current GTA V title update. They are not console applications and are not a supported way to modify GTA Online.
Built-in cheat codes: quick, supported and deliberately limited
GTA V includes cheats in the game itself. Rockstar documents a PC cheat box opened with the tilde key; it accepts vehicle-spawn and other cheat commands. On consoles, use the documented controller input for the relevant edition. These cheats need no mod files and are useful when you want one quick effect in Story Mode.
The trade-off is breadth. Cheats are preset: only the vehicles and effects represented by Rockstar’s built-in commands are available. A cheat cannot replace a trainer’s broad model browser, and it cannot be expanded with a custom vehicle list.

Director Mode is tied to Rockstar Editor. It lets you choose actors and manipulate scene conditions so you can stage repeatable shots, control who appears on screen and work with camera and environment settings. It is available on PC and later console versions, although the exact availability and menu presentation depend on the platform and game edition.

- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
Director Mode can include vehicles as part of a scene, but its purpose is cinematic control. It is not a replacement for a trainer’s broad vehicle menu, and it should not be treated as a general-purpose mod menu.
Vehicle trainers, cheats and Director Mode compared
| Axis | Vehicle trainer | Built-in cheat codes | Director Mode |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform | PC with Script Hook V and ASI support | PC and consoles with supported cheat input | PC and later console versions |
| Vehicle breadth | Broad model selection; some trainers include DLC models | Small set of preset spawn and effect codes | Scene-oriented; not a full trainer replacement |
| Setup | Install compatible files in the game directory | No mod installation; enter a code or supported input | Built into the Rockstar Editor/Director Mode flow |
| Best use | Testing vehicles, rapid spawning and sandbox experimentation | Fast, one-off effects in Story Mode | Machinima, actor staging, camera work and environment control |
| Online use | Script Hook V is unavailable in GTA Online | Not an Online progression tool | Not an Online mod method |
Which option is best for your goal?
Choose a trainer for vehicle testing or a complete catalogue
Use a trainer when your priority is finding a particular model, comparing many vehicles, testing DLC additions or spawning repeatedly while exploring the map. A trainer also avoids memorising several commands. This is the strongest choice for PC players who want a vehicle sandbox in Story Mode and are comfortable maintaining mod compatibility.
Choose cheats for a fast, no-install spawn
Use a built-in cheat when you need one of the game’s predefined vehicles or effects immediately, especially on a console where trainers are unavailable. Cheats are lower maintenance because they do not add files to the installation. Their limitation is fixed coverage: if Rockstar did not provide a command for a model, the cheat system cannot create it.
Choose Director Mode for a filmed scene
Use Director Mode when the result is a video rather than a vehicle collection. Actor selection, scene conditions and camera control matter more than access to every model. A trainer can help with broad vehicle access in PC Story Mode, but Director Mode supplies the repeatable staging and cinematic workflow.

How to install and use a vehicle trainer safely on PC
Keep this procedure strictly in offline Story Mode. Compatibility can change after Rockstar title updates, so confirm that your Script Hook V build supports the current PC game version before copying anything.
- Confirm the edition and make a backup. Verify that you are working with the PC edition of GTA V and keep a copy of important save files and the original game directory. A trainer is not appropriate for console editions.
- Check Script Hook V compatibility. Obtain the current Script Hook V release from its documentation and compare its supported game build with the title update installed on your PC. Do not assume an older loader will work after an update.
- Install the loader and trainer files. Follow the Script Hook V instructions for placing its loader and ASI support files in the main GTA V directory. The bundled Native Trainer is included with Script Hook V; an alternative such as PC Trainer V (Official) has its own files and instructions. Copy only files intended for your edition.
- Launch Story Mode without entering Online. Start the game and load an offline Story Mode save. Do not use a trainer while the game is connected to an Online session.
- Open the trainer and spawn a vehicle. Use the key or control listed in the trainer’s documentation, browse the vehicle category and select a model. Test one vehicle first so you can confirm that the loader and trainer versions are working together.
- Close the trainer before changing modes. Exit the trainer, quit to the desktop and remove or disable its files before launching GTA Online. Keeping mod files in the game directory creates an avoidable risk.
There is no universal trainer hotkey or identical menu structure. If a guide gives a key that does not match your build, use the trainer’s included documentation rather than guessing.
How to use GTA V’s built-in vehicle cheats
- Load Story Mode. Cheats described here are for the single-player game, not Online progression.
- Open the supported input. On PC, press the tilde key to open Rockstar’s cheat box and enter a documented command. On a console, use the controller sequence or other input documented for that edition.
- Enter only a supported code. The built-in system recognises Rockstar’s preset vehicle and effect commands. It does not accept arbitrary model names or trainer menu entries.
- Confirm the result before starting a mission. Rockstar Support says that starting a mission with off-mission cheat codes enabled will disable those cheats. If the game refuses a command, Rockstar also notes that cheats can be denied when they are unavailable.
- Return to normal play when finished. Because cheats are part of the game, no mod-file cleanup is required; simply reload or continue Story Mode without relying on the temporary effect.
Rockstar Support’s position is narrow and explicit: unless a code was given in-game or in the manual, the code is unofficial and cannot be supported. Use documented commands rather than lists that claim to unlock every vehicle.
How to stage cars in Director Mode
- Enter the Rockstar Editor/Director Mode flow from Story Mode. The exact menu path varies by platform and edition, so use the current in-game labels.
- Select an actor and location. Director Mode is built around choosing who appears in the scene and where the action takes place.
- Set the scene conditions. Adjust the available time, weather, wanted-state and other environment controls to create a repeatable setup. Options differ by edition.
- Place and drive the vehicle. Use the vehicles available through the mode’s scene controls, then rehearse the route and camera position before recording.
- Record and refine in Rockstar Editor. Capture multiple takes, change camera angles and edit the result. Director Mode is valuable because you can reproduce the same actors and conditions instead of rebuilding a scene manually.
If your objective is to film a specific rare or DLC vehicle, a PC trainer may provide broader access in offline Story Mode, while Director Mode supplies the camera and staging controls. Treat those as complementary Story Mode workflows, not as a way to modify Online.

- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
Why trainers must stay out of GTA Online
Script Hook V documentation states that it does not work in GTA Online. More importantly, Rockstar has warned against modifications that compromise Online’s fairness and economy. A trainer designed for Story Mode is therefore not merely unsupported in Online; using mod files there can put an account and other players at risk.
- Install and test trainers only with the game offline in Story Mode.
- Quit the game before switching to Online.
- Remove or disable Script Hook V, ASI loaders and trainer files before an Online launch.
- Keep a clean game installation available so an update or file mistake cannot carry modified components into Online.
- Never use a trainer to alter Online money, progression, vehicles or matchmaking.
Built-in cheats do not turn GTA Online into a supported cheat environment either. The comparison is between Story Mode methods; Online remains a separate, protected service.
Troubleshooting common failures
The trainer does not open after a game update
Most often, the Script Hook V build and the GTA V title update do not match. Check the current supported game version, install the compatible Script Hook V release and verify that the trainer itself supports that loader. Do not copy random replacement files from an unrelated build.

Temporarily remove the trainer and ASI files, then launch the unmodified game. If it starts normally, add back only the files required by the compatible trainer. Conflicting plugins, an outdated loader or a file copied into the wrong directory can all prevent startup.

A vehicle is missing from the trainer list
Check whether the trainer advertises DLC-model support and whether your game edition contains the relevant content. A built-in cheat list is smaller by design, so a missing model there is expected rather than a malfunction.
A cheat is refused or stops working
Confirm that you are in Story Mode and outside a mission. Rockstar Support says unavailable cheats may be denied, and starting a mission disables off-mission cheats. Re-enter only a documented command through the correct platform input.
Director Mode is unavailable or looks different
Check the platform and game edition. Director Mode availability is tied to PC and later console versions and to the Rockstar Editor flow, so older or differently packaged editions may present different options.
What you need to buy and check before starting
The relevant purchase is the base Grand Theft Auto V game for PC or a current console. Rockstar’s store lists editions that include Story Mode and GTA Online; every method in this guide operates inside GTA V, while only Story Mode is appropriate for trainers and cheats.
If you are checking a physical listing on Amazon, verify the exact regional edition, platform, included content and current price at the time you buy. Console ownership does not provide a trainer path, and a PC purchase does not guarantee that an older Script Hook V build will remain compatible after future title updates.
Bottom line
For PC Story Mode vehicle experimentation, use a maintained trainer with a compatible Script Hook V build. For a quick preset spawn with no installation, use Rockstar’s built-in cheat input. For machinima, actor staging and controlled camera work, use Director Mode. Keep every method inside offline Story Mode and restore a clean installation before entering GTA Online.
