GTA Online offers more freedom to choose activities, shape a character, and play socially; Story Mode offers more freedom within a directed story, especially through its three switchable protagonists. Which is better depends on whether “freedom” means an open-ended activity sandbox or agency inside a crafted campaign.
What “freedom” means in each mode
There is no single measured freedom score for the two modes. The practical difference is where each puts player choice: Story Mode centers on a written crime story and three named leads, while Online centers on a customizable character, a broad menu of activities, and other players.

For an ongoing activity sandbox and social options, GTA Online is the stronger fit. For a continuous, authored campaign with distinct protagonists, Story Mode is the stronger fit.
How Story Mode gives you freedom
Switch between three protagonists
Story Mode follows Michael, Franklin, and Trevor. Rockstar’s official manual says many missions involve two or three of them and allow switching between characters mid-action. Away from missions, each has separate friends, hobbies, and sidelines, and switching lets you see what they are doing. Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto V manual describes this as a core part of the campaign.

Explore around a directed campaign
You can explore the open world and choose which protagonist to inhabit outside missions, but the campaign remains authored: the cited official material does not establish that every mission or story event can be freely selected. Story Mode’s freedom is therefore about character perspective and exploration around the narrative, not building an entirely self-directed career.
How GTA Online gives you freedom
Create a character and build an identity
Online lets you create and develop a personal character, then acquire vehicles and properties. Rather than moving among three prewritten leads, you build one avatar and shape its place in Los Santos through activities and assets. Rockstar’s GTA Online product page describes the mode as an evolving universe for up to 30 players.

Choose from a broader, repeatable activity menu
Rockstar’s current product description lists cooperative heists, stunt races, adversary modes, businesses, social spaces such as nightclubs and car meetups, and more than 40 updates. Its official manual also outlines jobs, races, sports, open-world events, customization, and properties. The exact roster of events and features can change, and availability may vary by platform and date.
That variety is why Online is more open-ended in day-to-day play: you can choose among different roles and activities rather than following one campaign. Rockstar also identifies a Mission Creator and community-created experiences, though the available features may vary by platform and date.

Choose how social to make a session
Online supports playing solo or with friends, and Rockstar’s starter guidance points players toward private-lobby options. It is not accurate to describe the mode as requiring constant public-session competition. However, a private session does not establish that every activity is available privately or that every activity is risk-free: Rockstar warns that rival businesses can interfere with some business activities and destroy cargo or assets. Can you play GTA Online solo?
Yes. Rockstar describes Online as playable solo or with friends, and its starter tips point to private-lobby options. Solo play is not identical to Story Mode: Online remains an online mode, and Rockstar’s guidance notes that some business activity can expose cargo to rivals. Check the current activity and session options for your platform before assuming a particular job works privately.

Check platform and access requirements
Platform, edition, and account requirements can affect access. Rockstar’s current PC store page says activation and online play require an internet connection and Rockstar account authentication; other platforms may have different edition or subscription conditions.
