GTA 5 Story Mode is the self-contained, scripted heist campaign starring Franklin, Michael and Trevor. GTA Online is a separate, persistent version of Los Santos built around an evolving online world for up to 30 players, and Rockstar says it can be played solo or with friends. They share the same broad setting and many gameplay systems, but they are not interchangeable: buying GTA Online alone does not automatically give you the full Story Mode campaign.
Story Mode and GTA Online are different experiences
The easiest way to understand the difference is to treat the two modes as separate games that occupy the same fictional world.

Story Mode is a finished campaign
Story Mode follows three protagonists whose lives collide during a series of increasingly dangerous heists:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Franklin, a young street hustler trying to move beyond his current life.
- Michael, a retired bank robber pulled back into crime.
- Trevor, a volatile and unpredictable accomplice.
You switch among the three characters during the campaign, follow scripted missions, and experience a plot with a defined progression. The world is open for exploration between missions, but the central experience is a single-player adventure designed to be completed in the order established by the story.

GTA Online is an evolving online universe
GTA Online uses Los Santos as a shared setting for player-created characters, activities and businesses. Rockstar describes it as a “dynamic and ever-evolving online universe” for up to 30 players. That capacity describes the online session environment; it does not mean every mission or activity places 30 people together at once.
Instead of one campaign with a fixed ending, Online is expanded through new activities, missions and other gameplay additions over time. You can enter the world alone, invite friends, or meet other players in shared sessions, depending on the activity and your session settings.

Is GTA Online the same as GTA 5?
No. “GTA 5” usually refers to Grand Theft Auto V, the product that contains the Story Mode campaign and, in editions that specify it, GTA Online. GTA Online is the separate online component and can also be sold on its own.
The distinction matters when you are looking at a digital store listing. A listing for the combined game should explicitly say that it includes both Story Mode and GTA Online. A listing that says GTA Online only should be treated as the online product, not as a shorthand name for the complete campaign.
Why the names cause confusion
Both modes use Los Santos, the same broad map and many familiar mechanics, so screenshots and descriptions can look similar. The difference is the structure behind them: Story Mode is a authored narrative with three established protagonists, while Online is an ongoing service in which your character participates in activities that can change as new content is added.
Story Mode missions do not require you to share a session with other players. Online activities may be designed for one player, a small group or a larger session, but they operate through the online service and its platform requirements.
Can you play GTA Online solo?
Yes. Rockstar’s official description specifically says GTA Online is ready to enjoy solo or with friends. You do not have to assemble a group before entering the online world.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
What solo means in practice
Solo play means you can enter Online and undertake activities by yourself. It does not turn Online into the Story Mode campaign. You still use the online character and online progression, and some activities may be designed around cooperation or have requirements that differ from purely solo tasks.
If your priority is a campaign that is consistently written, paced and playable alone from beginning to end, Story Mode is the more direct fit. If you want a character and world that continue beyond a single campaign, Online offers that structure even when you play without friends.
When friends add value
Friends can make cooperative missions and shared activities easier or more enjoyable, but joining friends is optional according to Rockstar’s product description. The “up to 30 players” figure is a maximum session capacity, not a promise that every mission supports that many participants or that you will always encounter a full session.
Does GTA Online include Story Mode?
Not automatically. Rockstar lists a GTAV option that includes Story Mode and GTA Online, and it also lists GTA Online separately. If you buy the standalone Online product, Story Mode may be offered as a separate purchase through supported in-game prompts that open your platform’s store. Availability and the exact purchase flow depend on the platform and region, so check the current store listing before buying.
What to check before you purchase
- Read the edition name and feature list. Look for an explicit statement that Story Mode is included if you want the campaign.
- Check the platform. A console, PC or current-generation listing can have different requirements and feature descriptions.
- Confirm the region. Store availability and upgrade paths can vary by country.
- Check whether you already own Online. Owners of the standalone product may see an in-game route to purchase Story Mode, but the prompt and eligibility are platform-dependent.
- Review the current store page immediately before checkout. Prices, promotions and product configurations change, and no universal price can be assumed.
Story content exists in Online, but it is not the full campaign
GTA Online has received narrative missions that use characters and events connected to the wider GTAV setting. That overlap can make it seem as if the complete Story Mode campaign is included, but it is not.
The Contract
Rockstar described The Contract as bringing GTAV’s story into present-day GTA Online. It adds a narrative thread to the online world, but it remains Online content played through the online character and service. It does not replace the campaign about Franklin, Michael and Trevor.
Short Trips
Short Trips are co-op story missions within GTA Online. In a 2022 update, Rockstar said they would become accessible from the Jobs menu without requiring players to complete The Contract missions first. This is a useful example of narrative content inside Online: it has story elements and can involve named characters, yet it is still a set of online missions rather than the full single-player storyline.

Choose Story Mode when you want the complete three-protagonist campaign. Choose Online when you want its continuing activities and are interested in additional story-flavoured missions as part of that online framework.

Character and identity
Story Mode gives you three defined characters with established histories, relationships and roles in the plot. Switching between them is part of the campaign design.
Online centres on your created character. You build that character’s progression within the online world and take part in activities alongside or apart from other players. The experience is less about following one author-controlled biography and more about developing an ongoing presence in Los Santos.
Mission structure
Story Mode missions are arranged around the campaign’s narrative beats, including preparation and execution of heists. The game controls when major events become available and how the protagonists’ stories intersect.
Online presents activities through its live service structure. Missions, jobs and other additions can be introduced over time, and access may depend on the online world, your character’s progression or the activity’s player requirements.
Persistence
Story Mode progress belongs to the campaign save and remains a self-contained playthrough. Online progress belongs to the online character and service environment. That distinction is why Online requires online functionality even when you are playing alone, whereas console Story Mode can be played without a Rockstar Games account according to Rockstar’s support guidance.
Accounts and platform requirements
Requirements are not identical across platforms.
Console Story Mode
Rockstar’s support information says a Rockstar Games account is not required to play Story Mode on console. Certain online features do require an account, so this exception applies to the offline campaign rather than to all GTAV functionality.
Rank #4
- The biggest, most dynamic and most diverse open world ever created and now packed with layers of new detail.
- Grand Theft Auto V blends storytelling and gameplay in new ways as players repeatedly jump in and out of the lives of the game's three lead characters, playing all sides of the game's interwoven story.
- Grand Theft Auto V also comes with Grand Theft Auto Online, the dynamic and ever-evolving Grand Theft Auto universe for multiple players.
PC
On PC, Rockstar says an account is required for installation and online play. That requirement applies even if your main interest is accessing the PC version through a digital storefront.
Online service access
GTA Online depends on your platform’s online-service requirements in addition to the game account requirements. Those requirements can change by platform, subscription policy or regional store configuration. Confirm the current console or PC listing before purchase rather than assuming that a requirement for one platform applies everywhere.

Rockstar’s March 2022 announcement for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions described improvements specific to those console generations. On PlayStation 5, the announcement included support for DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers.
These are optional platform features, not requirements for playing either mode and not features that should be assumed on PC, older consoles or every controller. If you are deciding between versions, read the feature list for your exact console generation.
Which mode should you choose?
Choose Story Mode if you want:
- A defined campaign with a beginning, middle and conclusion.
- Three established protagonists—Franklin, Michael and Trevor—with linked storylines.
- Solo play without depending on an online session.
- Heist-focused missions presented in a controlled narrative order.
- A purchase that remains useful even when you do not want online features.
Choose GTA Online if you want:
- An evolving world rather than one finished campaign.
- A created character whose online progression continues over time.
- The option to play solo or join friends.
- Activities and updates added to the online universe after launch.
- Online missions that may include narrative elements without being the Story Mode campaign.
Choose a combined edition if you want both
A combined GTAV listing is the simplest choice when you want the full campaign and the online component. Verify that both names appear in the current product description. If you already own standalone Online, check whether Story Mode is offered as an in-game upgrade on your platform before buying another complete copy.
A practical buying checklist
Use this checklist on the store page for your console or PC:
Recommended Free Tools
- Product title: Does it say Grand Theft Auto V, GTA Online, or both?
- Included modes: Is Story Mode explicitly listed?
- Platform: Is the edition for your exact console generation or PC?
- Account: Will installation or online play require a Rockstar Games account?
- Network: Does your platform require its own online-service access for GTA Online?
- Upgrade path: If you own Online, does the store show a supported Story Mode purchase option?
- Regional details: Are the product, upgrade and payment options available in your country?
Do not infer inclusion from screenshots, a shared map name or the word “GTA” alone. The feature list is the reliable place to confirm what you are buying.

Common misunderstandings explained
“Online” means I must play with strangers
False. Rockstar says Online can be enjoyed solo. The online service and its evolving structure remain, but joining a group is not mandatory for every session.
Buying Online gives me the three-character campaign
False. Standalone Online is not the full Story Mode product. Story Mode must be included in the edition you buy or obtained separately through a supported purchase route.
Story missions in Online are the same as Story Mode
False. The Contract and Short Trips demonstrate that Online can contain narrative missions, but those are additions to the online experience, not the complete Franklin, Michael and Trevor campaign.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThe 30-player figure means every activity has 30 players
False. Up to 30 players refers to the online universe or session capacity described by Rockstar. Individual jobs and missions can have different participation structures.
PS5 controller features apply to every version
False. DualSense haptics and adaptive triggers were described for the PS5 version. They are generation-specific features, not universal requirements or guarantees across platforms.
Bottom line for choosing between them
Story Mode is the complete, scripted GTA 5 adventure and the right choice for a solo campaign centred on Franklin, Michael and Trevor. GTA Online is the separate, continually evolving online world, playable solo or with friends and supporting sessions of up to 30 players. Some Online updates add connected story content, but they do not include the full campaign by default.
Before you buy, identify whether the listing includes Story Mode, GTA Online or both, then verify your platform, account and network requirements. That single check prevents the most common mistake: purchasing standalone Online when what you wanted was the complete GTAV package.
