Michael, Franklin and Trevor at a glance
Grand Theft Auto V uses three protagonists instead of asking you to complete the entire story with one avatar. Their special abilities, ordinary skills and mission roles are distinct. The practical choice is usually determined by what the next objective demands: accurate gunfire, difficult driving or sustained combat under pressure.

Rockstar’s 2013 game manual describes three playable protagonists—Michael, Franklin and Trevor. Many missions involve two or all three, and you can switch between them during the action while they work as a team. A character switch is therefore more than a cosmetic change: it puts you in control of the specialist best suited to the current phase of the mission.

- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
A typical sequence might begin with Franklin driving the team through traffic, move to Michael for carefully selected shots from cover and then hand control to Trevor when the fight becomes a close-range assault. The game may also assign a character automatically for a particular objective, but missions that permit switching let you exploit each protagonist’s strength rather than treating them as interchangeable models.
Michael: the precision gunfighter
What Michael’s ability does
Rockstar describes Michael as an expert marksman with fast reactions in a gunfight. His Special Ability slows time during a gunfight, giving you more time to line up targets and pick them off. The slowdown is most valuable when several enemies appear at once, when opponents are exposed only briefly or when you must protect a teammate while returning fire.
When Michael is the right choice
- Multi-target firefights: slowing the scene helps you move from one threat to the next before enemies overwhelm your position.
- Cover-based shooting: use the extra reaction time to expose yourself briefly, place accurate shots and return to cover.
- Priority targets: if a mission presents a dangerous gunman, driver or moving target, Michael’s ability makes deliberate target selection easier.
- Controlled advances: when progress depends on clearing a route rather than reaching it quickly, his precision-oriented advantage is usually the safest fit.
Michael is less about charging into every encounter than about turning a chaotic exchange into a sequence of manageable shots. The ability does not make enemies harmless; it gives you a better window to decide which target matters first.
Franklin: the specialist driver
What Franklin’s ability does
Franklin is identified in the manual as a skilled driver with sharp reflexes. His Special Ability slows time while driving any road vehicle. That slower perception lets you navigate traffic, choose a gap and take corners at high speed without relying solely on last-second steering.

- Experience the world of Grand Theft Auto V like never before with the power of the PlayStation 4.
- Explore the City of Los Santos, the countryside and even the ocean.
- Play through an epic single player experience using three very different characters.
- Join your friends in GTA Online and see what trouble you can cause.
- Play golf, tennis, see a film or call someone and just hang out.
When Franklin is the right choice
- Police pursuits: traffic becomes easier to read when you can plan lane changes instead of reacting after a roadblock appears.
- Escape sections: the ability helps preserve speed through corners and gives you more options when the route suddenly narrows.
- Tight city routes: urban streets, intersections and parked vehicles create the kind of clutter Franklin’s time-slowing driving is designed to manage.
- Vehicle-heavy objectives: select Franklin when the mission’s success condition is primarily getting a vehicle—and its occupants—to a destination intact.
Franklin’s advantage is control, not an automatic guarantee of a clean getaway. You still need to select a viable route, avoid unnecessary collisions and manage the vehicle’s condition. The ability is strongest when you activate it before a difficult corner or dense traffic rather than waiting until the car is already out of control.
Trevor: the rage-powered assault character
What Trevor’s ability does
Trevor’s Special Ability sends him into a rage. During that state, he deals double damage to enemies and takes half as much damage when hit, according to Rockstar’s game manual. Those two effects work together: he can remove threats quickly while remaining more resistant to return fire.
When Trevor is the right choice
- Concentrated enemy fire: the reduction in incoming damage gives you more margin when several opponents are shooting at once.
- Forceful pushes: use the rage effect when the objective rewards moving forward rather than holding a distant firing position.
- Close-range encounters: the doubled outgoing damage is especially useful when enemies are near enough that you cannot avoid an exchange.
- Recovery from a bad position: if a fight has already become chaotic, Trevor can help you regain space by eliminating immediate threats faster.
Trevor’s ability supports an aggressive approach, but it is not an instruction to ignore cover or mission objectives. A player who activates rage without a clear target or route can still waste its duration and leave the team exposed.

Ordinary skills and how progression is assigned
The special abilities are only one part of the comparison. The manual lists stamina, shooting, strength, stealth, flying, driving and lung capacity as trainable player stats. These ordinary stats belong to the individual protagonist who uses them.
Rank #3
Practice is not shared across the trio. Time spent driving as Franklin improves Franklin’s Driving stat only; it does not raise Michael’s or Trevor’s equivalent. The same rule applies to the other trainable categories. If you want a protagonist to become better at a particular activity, perform that activity while controlling that character.
Special-ability use also improves the related Special stat. As that stat develops, the ability meter refills faster, allowing more frequent use. This creates a feedback loop: repeatedly using Michael’s shooting slowdown, Franklin’s driving slowdown or Trevor’s rage gradually makes that character’s defining tool available more often.
What this means for switching
- Do not assume a highly developed Franklin makes every protagonist a better driver.
- Build the character you expect to use for a role by practicing that role with them.
- Switching during a mission changes who benefits from the next action; it does not merge their progress.
- When preparing for a mixed mission, maintain the relevant skills on more than one protagonist if the mission repeatedly changes viewpoints.
Choosing a protagonist by mission objective
The simplest decision rule is to match the mission’s main risk to the protagonist’s documented advantage. The table below turns that rule into a quick selection guide.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Mission problem | First choice | Why | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Several enemies must be cleared accurately | Michael | Gunfight time-slowing supports deliberate target selection | Keep using cover; slowed time does not remove incoming damage |
| A chase runs through dense traffic | Franklin | Driving slowdown helps with lane changes and high-speed corners | Choose a route before the escape becomes congested |
| An assault is exposed to heavy fire | Trevor | Rage increases outgoing damage and reduces damage received | Use the ability for a clear push instead of activating it without a target |
| The mission changes from driving to shooting | Franklin, then Michael or Trevor | Use each specialist for the phase they handle best | Watch for the switch prompt and the next objective, not just the nearest enemy |
| A team member needs cover while another advances | Michael for cover fire; Trevor for a breakthrough | The two combat abilities solve different problems | Preserve the mission formation and avoid abandoning the objective |
This is a role-based recommendation, not a claim that one protagonist completes every mission faster. Mission design, your weapon choice, your route and your familiarity with the encounter all affect the outcome.

Heists: why complementary roles matter
The heist structure makes the character comparison especially important. Michael, Franklin and Trevor work together through a series of heists and select additional crew members. Those specialists have different abilities and percentage cuts.
The cheapest hire is not automatically the best value. Rockstar’s heist guidance explains that hiring only the cheapest crew can make an operation go less smoothly and reduce the overall take. A lower percentage cut may be outweighed by poorer execution, lost opportunities or a smaller final payout.
A practical heist-planning approach
- Identify the heist’s dominant phase. Decide whether the plan depends most on shooting, driving, flying, stealth or a combination.
- Assign the protagonist whose special ability matches the vulnerable phase. Franklin is the natural choice for a vehicle escape, Michael for controlled gunplay and Trevor for a forceful combat segment.
- Evaluate crew ability, not only the percentage cut. A cheaper specialist can create execution problems that cost more than the initial saving.
- Use switching as a planned tool. When the game gives you multiple viewpoints, move to the protagonist who solves the immediate problem instead of staying with the character you started as.
- Protect the final take. A smooth operation can be worth more than minimizing every crew member’s fee.
There is no single crew combination that is correct for every heist. The right choice depends on the approach you select and on whether your priority is a larger potential take, a forgiving execution or a particular style of play.
Finding missions and reading character markers
Rockstar Support identifies the story-map mission colors as follows: Franklin’s icons are green, Michael’s are blue and Trevor’s are orange. Icons for the character you are currently playing appear larger. That visual emphasis helps distinguish available activities when multiple protagonists have objectives in the same area.
Best Value
- Used Book in Good Condition
If a marker seems missing, first check which protagonist is active and whether the map is displaying that character’s activities. Switching to another protagonist can change which icon is emphasized and which mission is immediately available. The color identifies the character associated with the activity; it does not indicate a difficulty rating or a quality ranking.
How play style should influence your choice
Choose Michael if you enjoy deliberate combat
Michael suits players who prefer to study a firefight, prioritize targets and make accurate shots from cover. His ability rewards calm timing and a willingness to solve the encounter one enemy at a time.
Choose Franklin if movement is your main skill
Franklin is the best fit for players who enjoy planning a line through traffic, carrying speed through corners and turning a chase into a controlled driving problem. His value is most visible when the road, rather than the gunfight, is the mission’s main obstacle.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Choose Trevor if you want pressure and momentum
Trevor supports players who are comfortable taking space, absorbing some risk and ending an engagement quickly. Rage gives that approach a safety margin, but it still works best when paired with a clear objective and a route out of danger.
What the game does—and does not—establish about a “best” character
All three protagonists are fully playable, and the switching system is built around their complementary strengths. The official material establishes their abilities and trainable stats, but it does not provide independent win rates, universal mission-completion times or a numerical overall-strength ranking. Any claim that one character is objectively best for the entire story goes beyond the documented evidence.
Use the protagonist whose ability addresses the immediate constraint, develop that character’s ordinary stats through personal use and treat heist crew selection as a trade-off between cost and execution quality. That approach lets you benefit from the game’s intended design: Michael handles precision, Franklin handles the road and Trevor handles overwhelming force.
