For most new buyers, the native PS5 or Xbox Series X|S edition is the right choice if you own a current-generation console. On PC, buy the Enhanced edition when your computer meets Rockstar’s requirements; that purchase also includes Legacy for older hardware. Choose the PS4 or Xbox One version only if you use last-generation hardware or find a substantially cheaper compatible copy.
Your best edition depends on four things: the hardware you already own, whether you care about current-generation graphics and GTA Online features, where your existing progress lives, and the storage and online-subscription requirements for your platform.

PC Enhanced and Legacy
Rockstar’s PC purchase includes both GTAV Enhanced and GTAV Legacy. Rockstar describes Legacy as included for hardware that does not meet Enhanced’s minimum requirements. Enhanced is the forward-looking version: it adds ray-traced ambient occlusion and global illumination, ray-traced shadows and reflections, AMD FSR and NVIDIA DLSS support, faster loading through SSD and DirectStorage, 3D audio, and newer GTA Online content such as Hao’s Special Works and Career Builder.

That bundle is useful because you do not have to buy a second, older edition if your computer falls short. You can install Legacy on a weaker system and move to Enhanced later if you upgrade, while keeping the purchase tied to your Rockstar account.
PS5
The native PS5 listing includes both Story Mode and GTA Online. Its platform-specific improvements include faster loading, ray tracing, adaptive triggers, haptic feedback and Tempest 3D Audio. Supported modes reach up to 4K resolution and up to 60 frames per second; the exact mode and image quality depend on the game setting and display.
PlayStation also supports a one-time migration of PS4 Story Mode saves and GTA Online profiles to PS5. This is a migration rather than an unlimited synchronization service, so treat the PS5 move as a deliberate transfer of your existing progress.
Xbox Series X|S
Microsoft’s native Series edition is optimized for Xbox Series X|S and lists 4K Ultra HD, HDR10 and Dolby Atmos support. Xbox describes online multiplayer for 2–30 players. The Series X|S version is the appropriate choice when you want current-console performance rather than running the Xbox One build through backward compatibility.
The Xbox cross-generation bundle entitles you to download both the digital Xbox One version and the digital Xbox Series X|S version, including GTA Online, plus Series X|S Story Mode. That makes the bundle practical for households that use more than one generation of Xbox hardware.
PS4 and Xbox One
The last-generation editions remain sensible when your only console is a PS4 or Xbox One, or when a compatible copy is materially less expensive. They do not provide the native PS5 or Series feature set, so do not buy them expecting the same ray tracing, loading improvements, controller features or current-generation presentation.

Check your computer against the complete requirement, not just the processor or graphics card. Enhanced needs a recent 64-bit Windows installation, substantially more graphics memory and an SSD. Rockstar lists the following requirements for the current PC versions:

The storage figures are minimums: 105 GB on an SSD for Enhanced and 125 GB for Legacy. Leave additional free space for Windows, updates and other games. A computer that technically meets the minimum may still need reduced settings or resolution; Rockstar’s minimum specification is not a promise of a particular frame rate.
How to choose the PC version
- Choose Enhanced if your system meets the Enhanced minimum and you want ray-traced effects, modern upscaling, faster storage-aware loading and the newer GTA Online additions.
- Use Legacy if your machine cannot meet Enhanced’s processor, memory, graphics or SSD requirements. It is included with the PC purchase, so there is no separate Legacy purchase to make.
- Plan for account and internet access. Installation and online play require a Rockstar account and an internet connection.
Native-generation features that affect the buying decision
Graphics and frame rate
PS5 and Xbox Series X|S are native current-generation builds rather than merely the old console release. PS5 advertises up to 4K/60 fps modes, while Xbox Series X|S lists 4K Ultra HD support. “Up to” matters: resolution and frame-rate modes can trade image quality for smoothness, and the result depends on the selected mode, console model and display.
PC Enhanced offers the broadest graphics control. Ray-traced ambient occlusion, global illumination, shadows and reflections can improve lighting and reflections, while DLSS or FSR can help maintain performance on supported hardware. These options are useful only when your GPU and chosen settings can sustain them.
Loading and audio
Enhanced uses SSD and DirectStorage support for faster loading when the system has compatible storage. The console editions also advertise faster loading than their last-generation counterparts. PS5 adds Tempest 3D Audio; Xbox Series listings include Dolby Atmos; PC Enhanced includes 3D audio support. You need compatible headphones, speakers or an enabled audio system to hear the relevant spatial effects.
Controller features
On PS5, adaptive triggers and haptic feedback are part of the native edition. Those features are specific to the DualSense hardware and are not a reason to select the PS4 version if you own a PS5.

GTA Online content
PC Enhanced includes newer GTA Online content including Hao’s Special Works and Career Builder. The native PS5 and Xbox Series editions are the current-generation versions intended for the latest GTA Online updates. If access to those additions is important, avoid selecting an older last-generation build simply because it is familiar or discounted.
Migration: moving your existing Story Mode and GTA Online progress
Migration is family-specific. A PlayStation profile can move from PS4 to PS5, an Xbox profile can move from Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, and Rockstar documents a one-time move from PC Legacy to PC Enhanced. None of those rules means a PlayStation character can be transferred to Xbox.
PS4 to PS5
- Sign in on the PS5 with the PlayStation account associated with your PS4 progress.
- Install the native PS5 edition and open its migration option.
- Select the available PS4 Story Mode save and GTA Online profile.
- Confirm the one-time migration and verify the transferred progress before treating the PS5 copy as your only copy.
PlayStation’s listing explicitly describes transferring both GTAV Story Mode progress and GTA Online characters and progression to PS5 with a one-time migration.

- Use the same Xbox account that owns or played the Xbox One version.
- Install the Series X|S edition from the cross-generation entitlement when available.
- Start the migration flow and select the eligible Xbox One save or GTA Online profile.
- Complete the one-time transfer and check your Story Mode and Online data in the Series edition.
The Xbox bundle includes both digital generations, but owning both files does not turn migration into continuous cross-generation synchronization.
PC Legacy to Enhanced
- Install GTAV Enhanced through the Rockstar account that owns the PC purchase.
- Open the migration option and select the eligible Legacy profile.
- Confirm the one-time transfer, then launch Enhanced and check Story Mode and GTA Online progress.
Keep your Rockstar account credentials available. If the wrong account is used, the expected profile may not appear for migration.
GTA Online access and multiplayer requirements
GTA Online supports large sessions. Xbox product information lists online multiplayer for 2–30 players, and Rockstar and Microsoft product listings reference sessions of up to 30 players. The exact matchmaking experience depends on the platform, game mode and current service operation.

- Identify your hardware. Confirm whether you are buying for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PS4, Xbox One or Windows PC. Do not assume a last-generation disc or digital license automatically includes every newer edition.
- Check the product title carefully. On Xbox, look for the cross-generation entitlement if you need both Xbox One and Series versions. On PC, confirm that the listing includes Enhanced and Legacy.
- Compare the live regional price. Promotions and store prices change by country and date. Compare like-for-like editions and include any required online subscription in your budget.
- Verify storage before checkout. Reserve at least 105 GB of SSD space for PC Enhanced or 125 GB for PC Legacy, plus headroom for updates and the operating system.
- Check migration eligibility. If you already have progress, buy within the same platform family and make sure you can sign in to the original account.
- Choose the native build where available. On a current console, select the PS5 or Series X|S edition rather than an older build unless price or compatibility makes the older version necessary.
Common buying mistakes and fixes
Buying a PS4 or Xbox One copy for a current console
An older copy may run on newer hardware, but it is not the same as buying the native current-generation edition. If you want the advertised ray tracing, faster loading, modern controller features or current-generation GTA Online additions, confirm that the checkout item is the PS5 or Xbox Series X|S product.
Assuming cross-platform migration
Migration follows platform families: PS4 to PS5, Xbox One to Xbox Series X|S, and PC Legacy to Enhanced. There is no basis in the documented migration paths for moving a PlayStation profile to Xbox or vice versa.
Underestimating the PC requirement
Enhanced requires 8 GB RAM and a 4 GB-VRAM GTX 1630/RX 6400-class GPU at minimum, plus a 105 GB SSD. If your computer falls below those figures, install the included Legacy edition instead of expecting Enhanced to perform well.
Confusing storage with free space
The published 105 GB and 125 GB figures describe the stated installation requirement, not a recommendation to fill a drive completely. Keep extra space available for updates and normal operating-system operation.
Expecting a guaranteed 4K/60 experience
PS5’s “up to 4K/60 fps” wording describes available performance modes, not a universal simultaneous guarantee at every setting. Check the in-game graphics mode and your display’s capabilities.

Which edition is best for different buyers?
New console buyer
Choose PS5 if you value DualSense feedback and Tempest 3D Audio, or Xbox Series X|S if you prefer its ecosystem and Dolby Atmos support. Both deliver native current-generation improvements; the console you already own should decide the purchase.
PC player upgrading from an older machine
Buy the PC version once and use Legacy if necessary. Upgrade to Enhanced when the computer reaches the published requirements, rather than purchasing the game again.
Budget-focused last-generation player
PS4 or Xbox One remains appropriate when that is your available hardware and the lower price is meaningful. Confirm the edition and understand that the native current-generation feature set is not included.
