Grand Theft Auto IV is the better choice for weighty, demanding driving and physics-led immersion. Grand Theft Auto V is better if you want forgiving handling, quick mastery, first-person driving, and a broader, brighter sandbox. Neither game wins every category: the right pick depends on whether you want to manage momentum and consequences or get into a car and drive confidently within minutes.
GTA 4 vs GTA 5 at a glance
The two games use driving to create very different moods. GTA IV makes every vehicle feel like a machine with mass. Suspension loads up, large cars lean through corners, tires lose composure when you ask too much of them, and crashes can visibly alter a vehicle. GTA V simplifies those demands so that steering, braking and recovery are easier to read, even during high-speed chases.

Why GTA IV feels heavier
Weight transfer is part of every corner
GTA IV’s handling model asks you to think about where the vehicle’s mass is moving. Braking shifts load forward, acceleration settles the rear, and a sudden steering input can leave the car leaning or sliding before you have time to correct it. Large sedans exhibit what Traxion described in 2024 as “boat-like levels of body roll.” That roll is not just visual decoration: it signals that the suspension is working and that an aggressive input may overwhelm the tires.

- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Understeer is common when you enter a bend too quickly. The front tires run out of grip, the car pushes wide, and simply turning the wheel farther does not solve the problem. A measured lift of the throttle or a straight-line brake application gives the front axle a better chance to bite. This makes a clean lap or a carefully executed escape feel earned rather than automatic.
Different drivetrains produce different reactions
Traxion counted just under 120 cars and motorcycles in GTA IV and highlighted meaningful drivetrain contrasts. The rear-engined, rear-wheel-drive Comet and the front-engined, front-wheel-drive Blista do not respond identically to throttle or corner entry. A rear-driven car can rotate more readily when power is applied, while a front-driven layout tends to pull the nose toward the direction of travel and can run wide when overloaded. You do not need engineering knowledge to notice the difference; you feel it when changing cars for a mission or stealing a vehicle from traffic.
Crashes communicate force
GTA IV combines the RAGE engine with NaturalMotion’s Euphoria plugin. The result is a world in which bodies, pedestrians and vehicles react dynamically to impacts. Cars show more pronounced deformation than in GTA V, and a collision can change how a damaged vehicle behaves or how safely you can continue a pursuit. Euphoria also makes falls, impacts and near misses look less like canned animations, reinforcing the impression that Liberty City is reacting rather than merely playing a preset.
Planning beats maximum entry speed
The most reliable GTA IV technique is to finish most of your braking before you turn. Loading the suspension in a straight line keeps the car stable; braking while turning can combine weight transfer and steering forces until the front tires surrender. A practical sequence is:
- Scan the road, traffic and corner exit before committing to the turn.
- Brake while the car is straight, using a longer, smoother application rather than a last-second stomp.
- Release some brake pressure as you begin steering so the front tires can change direction.
- Hold a steady or gently increasing throttle through the middle of the corner.
- Unwind the steering and accelerate only when the exit is clear.
This approach is slower at the corner entry than simply charging in, but it produces fewer spins, wall impacts and mission-ending pileups. It also explains why GTA IV can feel difficult during the first few hours and satisfying once you learn to respect its momentum.

How GTA V changes the driving formula
Forgiving, predictable controls
TechRadar described GTA V’s driving in January 2026 as “streamlined and arcadey,” with controls that are “tight, predictable, and easy to master.” Traxion similarly called its cars much more forgiving and less detailed in their physics and damage models than GTA IV’s. You can enter a corner too fast, make a correction, and often recover without the long chain of weight shifts that makes an equivalent mistake in GTA IV so punishing.
That accessibility serves the game’s mission design. GTA V frequently asks you to switch between shooting, driving, flying and other activities under pressure. A forgiving car model keeps the vehicle from becoming a second boss fight and lets the set piece, dialogue or route remain the focus. It also makes the game friendlier to players using a keyboard, a less precise controller or a high camera sensitivity.

GTA V still offers a large range of vehicle types, but the handling differences are easier to predict. You can learn a few broad rules—sports cars respond quickly, heavy vehicles take longer to stop, off-road vehicles tolerate rough surfaces—and apply them across the map. That consistency is useful in missions where the game gives you an unfamiliar car and expects immediate progress.
First-person driving is a genuine immersion option
Rockstar’s official GTAV perspective guide confirms that first-person mode can be selected for driving while third-person remains selected for running and shooting. In practice, you can use a behind-the-wheel view for cruising or firefights in traffic, then return to the familiar over-the-shoulder view when you leave the car. That separate-perspective setup is one of GTA V’s clearest advantages for players who want cockpit immersion without committing to first person everywhere.
First person does not make GTA V’s physics heavier, but it changes how you read speed, mirrors, traffic gaps and road furniture. A predictable handling model is especially helpful from inside the car, because you can concentrate on visual navigation instead of fighting sudden slides. Third person remains more informative for tight chases and off-road driving because it exposes the vehicle’s position relative to obstacles.

Physics and damage: which game is more realistic?
There is no single definition of realism. GTA IV models the sensations most players associate with mass—lean, delayed responses, grip loss and visible deformation—more aggressively. GTA V models controllability and recovery more generously. The following distinction helps separate physical detail from ease of use:
| Physical behavior | GTA IV | GTA V |
|---|---|---|
| Body roll | Large sedans can lean dramatically, especially in fast direction changes | Present but less dominant in ordinary driving |
| Weight transfer | Strong enough to punish braking or steering at the wrong time | More muted and easier to correct |
| Understeer | A major consideration when entering corners too quickly | Less likely to derail a run after a mistake |
| Crash deformation | More exaggerated and consequential | Simplified compared with GTA IV |
| Vehicle recovery | Requires deliberate throttle and steering corrections | Usually quick and predictable |
GTA IV therefore wins if you want the vehicle to communicate a chain of physical causes: brake late, load the front tires, turn sharply, exceed grip, and watch the car push wide. GTA V wins if you want the same chain compressed into a readable game action: brake, turn, correct and continue.
Immersion is a split decision
GTA IV: a cohesive, oppressive city
Liberty City is smaller in emotional scope but unusually consistent in tone. Its streets, weather, traffic and industrial spaces support a grimier, more oppressive atmosphere. The heavy handling reinforces that mood: a wet-looking road, a damaged sedan and a narrow street all feel like obstacles with consequences, not scenery placed around an action game. TechRadar’s 2026 comparison called Liberty City more memorable and oppressive, while describing Los Santos as brighter and less distinctive.
The physical reactions also help immersion outside missions. Pedestrians stumble, bodies react to impacts and vehicles deform in ways that make an accidental collision feel like an event. This can be inconvenient when you simply want to reach a waypoint, but it gives ordinary travel a stronger sense of presence.
GTA V: variety, scale and viewpoint choice
Los Santos is brighter and broader, with more room for different activities and landscapes. The variety can make the world feel more like a playground than a single tightly authored city, yet that breadth is itself immersive for players who enjoy changing from urban roads to hills, desert routes or coastline without leaving the same map.

The ability to combine first-person driving with third-person on-foot play gives GTA V a flexibility GTA IV does not officially match. You can cruise in a dashboard view, switch to an exterior camera for a difficult pursuit, and keep the perspective that best suits each activity. For some players, that agency matters more than a heavier suspension model.
Which game is easier to learn?
GTA IV’s learning curve
Expect a short adjustment period. New players often interpret a missed corner as unresponsive steering when the real problem is excessive entry speed or braking while turning. Spend time on a quiet road learning how quickly each class of vehicle stops, how much a sedan leans and how early you must release the brake. Read traffic gaps as part of the driving task: sudden lane changes leave less room for a heavy car to recover.
- Use straight roads to test braking distance before attempting a high-speed mission.
- Approach blind corners conservatively; the exit matters more than the entry speed.
- If the car begins to understeer, ease off the throttle and reduce steering angle instead of adding more lock.
- After a crash, assess whether damaged bodywork or a compromised vehicle makes continuing worthwhile.
GTA V’s learning curve
Most players can be competent within a few drives. The forgiving model lets you focus on route choice, mission objectives and combat transitions. You still benefit from braking before a bend and choosing an appropriate vehicle, but the game rarely demands the same level of suspension management. That makes GTA V the safer recommendation for a shared console, a first open-world driving game or anyone who wants to move through the story without repeated retries caused by a single corner.
Choose by the experience you want
| Your priority | Better match | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Weighty cars and demanding cornering | GTA IV | Strong body roll, understeer and weight transfer make speed management central. |
| Fast mastery and fewer driving failures | GTA V | Controls are tight, predictable and forgiving. |
| Visible crash consequences | GTA IV | Damage and deformation are more pronounced. |
| First-person cockpit driving | GTA V | Rockstar officially supports first-person driving with a separate third-person on-foot setting. |
| A distinctive, oppressive city mood | GTA IV | Liberty City’s atmosphere and physical reactions form a more cohesive whole. |
| Broad activities and a brighter sandbox | GTA V | Los Santos offers greater variety and a flexible perspective system. |
Choose GTA IV when the drive itself is the attraction. Choose GTA V when driving is one part of a larger action sandbox and you want the controls to stay out of the way.
Platforms, editions and buying checks
GTA IV availability
GTA IV launched in 2008 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Later PC versions were distributed through Steam and the Rockstar Launcher. The exact edition and availability can vary by region, so verify the marketplace listing, operating-system requirements and included episodes before purchasing. A listing for an older console release is not automatically interchangeable with a modern PC version.

GTA V availability
Rockstar currently lists enhanced editions of GTA V. Check whether a store page is for the edition supported by your console or PC, and confirm whether the features you want—especially first-person perspective and any platform-specific enhancements—are included. Digital storefront names, upgrade paths and regional catalogues can change, so use the current listing for your location rather than relying on an old article.
Controller and settings considerations
Your input device can alter the apparent difference between the games. An analog controller gives finer throttle and steering control in GTA IV, while keyboard users may find its abrupt digital inputs harder to manage. Sensitivity, camera distance, vibration and driving-assist settings also change how quickly you can read a slide. Compare the games with similar camera and control settings before deciding that one physics model is universally better.
What can change the comparison?
- Platform ports: frame-rate behavior, input latency and camera options can differ between console generations and PC releases.
- Patches and updates: later revisions may adjust stability or compatibility without changing the underlying design goals.
- Mods: PC modifications can alter handling, traffic, damage or camera behavior, so a modded installation is not a direct comparison with the original release.
- Player skill: a driver who has practiced weight transfer may find GTA IV natural, while a newcomer may experience the same model as frustrating.
- Perspective: first person can make GTA V feel more immediate, but it does not turn its forgiving handling into GTA IV’s heavier physics.
These variables explain why two players can report opposite winners without either misunderstanding the games. They may be using different editions, controls or definitions of immersion.
The design philosophy behind the difference
The contrast is intentional rather than an accident of age. GTA IV prioritizes a reactive, physical city in which travel has friction. GTA V prioritizes flow: missions move quickly, vehicle changes are frequent and recovery from mistakes is generous. In a 2026 GamesRadar interview, Rockstar co-studio head Rob Nelson described a later design goal as preserving “some of the best parts of the weightiness and feel of GTA 4” while keeping “the accessibility of GTA 5,” with drivetrain, tires, suspension and steering all tuned within the physics model. That comment helps explain why the two games are often discussed as opposite ends of the same design spectrum: one emphasizes consequence, the other approachability.
Final verdict
GTA IV has the better driving and physics if you value mass, body roll, drivetrain character, deformation and the need to plan every corner. Its demanding handling is inseparable from Liberty City’s grim atmosphere, making ordinary travel feel tense and consequential.
GTA V has the better driving experience if you value accessibility, predictable control, first-person options and a broad sandbox that rarely punishes experimentation. It is easier to learn and better suited to players who want to move between driving, shooting and exploration without a long physics tutorial.
So, is GTA 4 driving more realistic? In the sense of weight and physical consequence, yes. Is GTA 5 easier to drive? Definitely. Which feels more immersive depends on whether immersion comes from a car that demands respect or a world that lets you choose how to experience it.
