What remains the same
At its core, GTA 3 Definitive Edition is still the same Grand Theft Auto III released on October 22, 2001. Claude’s story, the three-island Liberty City layout, the mission sequence, vehicles, radio stations and open-world progression remain recognizable. The remake does not replace the campaign with a new storyline or redesign the city into a different game.
That distinction matters. The Definitive Edition is a presentation and usability overhaul, not a ground-up rewrite of GTA III’s content. Missions still ask you to work through the same criminal underworld, unlock the same broad areas and use the same categories of vehicles and weapons. If you remember the original’s route through Liberty City, the remaster is designed to feel familiar immediately.
#1 Best Overall
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City. With the revolutionary freedom to go anywhere and jack anyone, Grand Theft Auto III puts the center of the criminal underworld at your fingertips, if you have enough guts to take it.
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s. From the decade of big hair and pastel suits comes the story of one man's rise to the top of the criminal pile.
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
The soundtrack requires a narrower qualification. A specialist comparison published by GTA Intel on February 23, 2026 states that GTA III did not lose songs in the Definitive Edition. That is an editorial comparison rather than an official soundtrack-rights notice, so it should not be treated as a formal licensing statement from Rockstar. The safe conclusion is that the comparison source found no song removals for GTA III, while exact track availability can still depend on the edition and platform you are playing.

How the visual overhaul changes Liberty City
Higher-resolution surfaces and assets
Rockstar described the collection as receiving “across-the-board enhancements.” Xbox’s official feature list is more specific: buildings, weapons, roads, interiors and other surfaces use higher-resolution textures, while character and vehicle models are upgraded. The result is a cleaner image at modern display resolutions, especially when you look closely at road markings, storefronts, vehicle panels and interior details.
These changes do not alter the city’s basic geometry or mission geography. They change how clearly that geometry is presented. Roads, façades and props can appear sharper, and distant objects are intended to remain visible over a greater range. New foliage and smoother surfaces add detail to areas that looked sparse or visibly low-resolution in the 2001 presentation.
Lighting, shadows, weather and reflections
The most consequential visual change is the rebuilt lighting system. Xbox lists improved shadows, weather and reflections alongside upgraded models and textures. Lighting affects the entire mood of Liberty City: daylight, night scenes, wet streets, vehicle bodies and building interiors all receive a modern rendering treatment rather than the original fixed-era look.
This can make the remaster appear more vivid and readable, but it also changes the atmosphere that made the original distinctive. Colors, sky presentation and contrast no longer match the 2001 game exactly. Players who prefer the original’s darker or more stylized mood may find the default Definitive Edition look less authentic even when its assets are technically more detailed.
Classic Lighting mode
Rockstar Support’s Title Update 1.112, dated November 25, 2024, added Classic Lighting mode on supported platforms. The update notes describe it as restoring “the look and feel of the sky in the original games.” It is not a complete rollback of every texture, model or interface change; it specifically addresses the lighting and sky presentation that many players associated with the original trilogy.
Use Classic Lighting when you want the newer assets and controls without the default remaster sky treatment. If your priority is a fully authentic 2001 presentation, the original release remains the more exact reference because Classic Lighting does not turn every modernized component back into its old version.

Controls and combat: the biggest hands-on change
GTAV-inspired controls
Xbox’s official announcement says the Definitive Edition “debuts new GTAV-inspired modern controls.” In practical terms, the control scheme is designed around conventions familiar from later 3D Grand Theft Auto games rather than the original’s 2001 layout and handling assumptions.
The change is most noticeable when moving between walking, aiming, entering vehicles and switching equipment. Players accustomed to modern third-person action games generally need less adjustment to camera and targeting behavior. Returning players may initially find that familiar inputs produce different results, so the remaster can feel easier to operate while also feeling less period-authentic.
Improved targeting and lock-on aiming
The official feature list also calls out improved targeting and lock-on aiming. This affects firefights, drive-bys and encounters where quickly selecting a nearby opponent matters. It does not change the weapons or mission objectives themselves; it changes the interface and responsiveness used to execute them.
Modern targeting can reduce friction in missions that were awkward on the original control scheme. It can also make combat feel less like the deliberately rigid 2001 system. If you are replaying GTA III to study its original design, that difference is part of the comparison rather than a simple technical upgrade.

The Definitive Edition adds updated Weapon and Radio Station Wheels. These radial menus let you select equipment or switch stations without cycling through every item in sequence. The feature is especially useful when a mission requires a rapid change from a firearm to another weapon, or when you want to move between radio stations while driving.
The wheels are quality-of-life changes, not new gameplay systems. They preserve the same weapons and stations while reducing the number of button presses needed to reach them. Players seeking the original interface will notice the difference every time they prepare for a fight or change music.
Navigation, saving and mission progression
Waypoints and GPS routes
The updated minimap supports waypoint setting and enhanced navigation, according to Xbox’s official feature list. The specialist GTA Intel comparison further identifies GPS routes as a practical addition over the 2001 release. Instead of relying only on memory, street signs or the static map, you can mark a destination and receive route guidance while driving.
Rank #3
- Grand Theft Auto III: It all starts in Liberty City
- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City: Welcome to the 1980s
- Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas: Five years ago, Carl 'CJ' Johnson escaped the haze of Los Santos, San Andreas...a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs, and corruption.
GPS is most useful in Liberty City’s early hours, when you are still learning the one-way streets, bridges and island connections. It also reduces downtime after a mission sends you to an unfamiliar neighborhood. The feature does not change the city’s layout; it changes how much of that layout you need to memorize.
Rockstar’s April 30, 2024 Title Update 1.04 notes include GTA III-specific GPS and minimap changes. That is important because launch-era navigation behavior was not necessarily the same as the patched version. If GPS appears inconsistent, update the game before judging the feature.
Mission restart and autosave convenience
GTA Intel reports instant mission restart after failure and autosave behavior as additions over the original release. These features reduce the repeated travel and manual-save routine that could make a failed attempt feel expensive in the 2001 game.
Instant restart is particularly valuable for missions with a long drive to the objective or a difficult final sequence. Autosave provides a safety net, but it should not replace deliberate manual saves when you are about to make a major attempt or explore optional content. The exact save prompts and behavior can vary by platform and game state, so treat autosave as convenience rather than a guarantee that every moment is preserved.
Achievements and trophies
The Definitive Edition adds achievement or trophy tracking, as reported by GTA Intel. This gives modern-platform players an external checklist for campaign milestones and optional goals. The original game’s internal progression remains the same, but the remaster can record accomplishments through the platform account attached to your copy.
Did GTA 3 Definitive Edition lose songs?
The available comparison source says GTA III did not lose songs in the Definitive Edition. Because that conclusion comes from GTA Intel’s specialist comparison rather than an official Rockstar licensing bulletin, it is best read as a finding about the compared editions, not as a universal promise covering every future platform or regional release.
No separate official soundtrack-rights notice in the cited material provides a song-by-song legal record. If a particular station or track matters to you, verify the soundtrack in the specific edition available in your region. Do not assume that a result reported for one platform automatically establishes licensing for every distribution channel.

Technical condition: launch version versus patched game
Why launch reviews were harsh
The Definitive Edition launched digitally on November 11, 2021, and the specialist comparison documents serious technical problems at launch. Reported concerns included performance instability, visual defects, collision problems and progression issues. Those complaints describe the initial release condition, not necessarily the build you download today.
A fair comparison therefore needs two baselines: the 2021 launch package and the later patched version. Calling the entire Definitive Edition “broken” without a date ignores the updates; claiming it was flawless because current patches exist ignores the launch experience that shaped its reputation.

What Title Update 1.04 documented
Rockstar Support’s Title Update 1.04 page, last updated April 30, 2024, records improved performance across platforms and graphics modes, stability improvements, collision fixes and texture fixes. The notes also list GTA III changes involving sprinting, minimap zoom, GPS, camera behavior, mission progression, vehicle visibility and numerous environmental assets.
These notes establish that Rockstar addressed specific defects, but they do not provide a single benchmark proving identical performance on every console, PC configuration or graphics mode. Frame-rate behavior can still depend on hardware, display settings and the current build. Install the latest update before comparing responsiveness or stability with the original.
What Title Update 1.112 added
Rockstar Support’s Title Update 1.112 notes, dated November 25, 2024, add Classic Lighting mode on supported platforms and list further fixes and improvements. The update is evidence that the collection continued receiving maintenance after the 1.04 notes, including work intended to address presentation and gameplay issues.
Because support notes summarize fixes rather than publish a complete platform-by-platform test report, they cannot guarantee that every historical complaint is eliminated in every circumstance. They do show why current players should distinguish an updated installation from launch footage or first-week reviews.

Which version should you play?
Choose the Definitive Edition if convenience is your priority
- You want modern aiming and targeting rather than the original lock-on feel.
- You prefer Weapon and Radio Station Wheels for faster selection.
- You want waypoint setting, GPS guidance and a more informative minimap.
- You value instant mission restart, autosave convenience and achievement or trophy tracking.
- You want higher-resolution textures, upgraded models, improved weather, reflections, foliage and draw distance.
- You are playing on a current console or PC and want the officially supported modern release.
Install every available update before forming an opinion. The patched build documented through November 2024 is the relevant comparison for a new purchase, not the uncorrected 2021 launch build.
Choose the original if authenticity is the priority
- You want the exact 2001 rendering, sky, lighting and texture presentation.
- You prefer the original control response, aiming behavior and interface quirks.
- You are preserving the game as it existed at release rather than adapting it to modern conventions.
- You regard the original atmosphere as more important than sharper assets or route guidance.
The original is not automatically “better”; it is the more faithful version of the 2001 experience. Its value is precisely in the limitations and design assumptions that the remaster smooths over.
Use a mixed-priority decision
If you want modern controls but dislike the remaster’s default sky and lighting, the updated edition offers a compromise: enable Classic Lighting where your platform supports it, then keep the modern targeting, wheels, navigation and progression conveniences. If you want every part of the old presentation and interface, no remaster setting can fully replace the original.

What the Definitive Edition does not change
The remaster does not transform GTA III into a new-generation open-world design. It does not replace Claude’s story, create a different Liberty City, add a new campaign or change the basic mission progression. Its largest additions are rendering, controls, interface and convenience systems.
That is why opinions can reasonably differ. A player measuring visual clarity, route guidance and controller familiarity may prefer the Definitive Edition. A player measuring atmosphere, historical accuracy and original handling may prefer the 2001 release. Both judgments fit the documented changes because the games share the same core while presenting it through different technical layers.
Final verdict
GTA 3 Definitive Edition is the same landmark campaign rebuilt for modern displays and modern habits. Its higher-resolution assets, lighting overhaul, improved targeting, radial menus, GPS, mission-restart convenience and achievement support remove much of the friction associated with the original. The 2024 updates, including Classic Lighting, also make the current version a more nuanced product than the troubled launch edition.
Play the original for the exact 2001 mood and controls. Play the patched Definitive Edition for current-platform access and a smoother, more guided experience. Neither choice changes Claude’s story or Liberty City’s fundamental structure; the decision is about how faithfully you want to preserve the old presentation versus how much modern usability you want layered onto it.
