Which GST returns do small businesses and freelancers need to understand?
GSTR-1 reports outward supplies
GSTR-1 is the monthly or quarterly statement of outward supplies for normal and casual registered taxpayers who make them. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ lists exceptions, including composition taxpayers, input service distributors and persons liable to deduct or collect tax under specified provisions. Whether a particular business or freelancer belongs in the ordinary GSTR-1 filing group therefore depends on its registration and taxpayer category, not just its size.

GSTR-3B is a separate return workflow
GSTR-3B is filed separately from GSTR-1. GSTR-2B is an input tax credit statement used to report the relevant credit in the corresponding GSTR-3B sections. The GST Portal says supplier-filed GSTR-1 or GSTR-1A, IFF and other specified data feed into a recipient’s GSTR-2B. Review and reconcile the information relevant to your return before filing.
Do I need to file GST returns if I had no sales?
For GSTR-1, yes: the GST Portal says it must be filed even when there was no business activity in the period. A quiet period is not, by itself, a reason to skip a return that is due.
#1 Best Overall
For GSTR-3B, “no sales” is not enough to establish that you can file a nil return. The portal’s nil-return test requires no outward supplies, no inward supplies and no tax liability. Its filing workflow also requires that there be no auto-populated return data, no manual entries and no outstanding interest or late-fee liability. If any of those conditions is not met, do not treat the return as nil merely because you made no sales.
What is the GSTR-1 due date?
The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ lists the 11th of the succeeding month for monthly filers and the 13th of the month after the quarter for quarterly filers. Those are standard dates, not guarantees for every period: government notifications may extend a deadline. Check the due date shown in the GST Portal for the relevant tax period rather than relying on a calendar or an old reminder.
Can a small taxpayer file GST returns quarterly?
The Quarterly Returns with Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme lets eligible taxpayers file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax monthly through a challan. It changes the return-filing cadence; it does not mean that tax payments are made only once a quarter.
The GST Portal’s QRMP FAQ, accessed in 2026, states a PAN-based aggregate annual turnover threshold of up to ₹5 crore in the current financial year and the preceding financial year where applicable. It also says the latest due GSTR-3B must have been filed. Certain taxpayer types and portal preconditions apply, so verify eligibility and opt-in status in the GST Portal for the relevant quarter.

| Filing choice | Return cadence | Tax payment | Other point to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly filing | GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B are filed monthly. | Monthly. | Check the portal’s due date for each tax period. |
| QRMP | Eligible taxpayers file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly. | Monthly, through a challan. | Eligibility and selection-window details should be checked in the portal. The optional Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) lets taxpayers furnish B2B invoices in the first two months of a quarter. |
The monthly-filing cadence in the table describes the monthly option in contrast to QRMP; confirm which option applies to your registration in the portal. IFF is an optional way to furnish B2B invoices during the first two months of a QRMP quarter, not a change to the quarterly return cadence.
How can I prepare and file GSTR-1?
The GST Portal lists three preparation routes. The right fit depends on invoice volume, workflow and comfort with handling business data; the official options do not establish that any named commercial provider is necessary or best.
| Route | What it involves | Useful considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Online entry | Enter return information in the GST Portal. | Consider whether the volume and complexity of your records make direct entry workable. |
| Returns Offline Tool | Prepare data for upload using the portal’s offline tool. | Check that the tool and your prepared data fit the forms and filing frequency you use. |
| Third-party application through an ASP/GSP | Use an application offered through an Application Service Provider (ASP) and a GST Suvidha Provider (GSP). | Before choosing one, verify supported forms and workflow, current price, data handling, user access and available support. |
The GST Portal identifies these routes for GSTR-1. It does not, in the cited guidance, verify particular vendors, their current prices, security practices or support quality. Assess those points directly before placing invoices or other business information in an optional service.

Is the composition scheme right for a freelancer?
There is no blanket answer. The GST Portal’s GSTR-1 FAQ establishes that composition taxpayers are outside the ordinary GSTR-1 filing group, but that fact alone does not establish whether a particular freelancer qualifies for the composition scheme. Eligibility depends on the person’s circumstances and current rules. Check current official guidance or consult a qualified tax professional before choosing or changing a scheme.
