For an online purchase in India, check the supplier’s tax invoice for the seller’s identity, invoice details, item description, taxable value and applicable tax. If you return an item or an invoice needs correction, the supplier may issue a GST credit note. That tax adjustment is separate from the money refund: GST rules do not set one universal refund deadline for every online order.
What to check on an online purchase invoice
Look for the supplier’s tax invoice, not just the marketplace order summary. A marketplace may provide a downloadable invoice, but the supplier identified on the invoice is the party whose details and tax particulars matter. The applicable particulars can depend on the buyer and the transaction.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Supplier name, address and GSTIN, where applicable.
- A unique consecutive invoice number and issue date.
- Description of the goods or services; for goods, quantity and unit.
- HSN or service accounting code, taxable value, tax rate and tax amount.
- Place-of-supply details for an inter-state supply, and reverse-charge indication where relevant.
- Recipient details where required, and the supplier’s signature or digital signature.
These particulars are set out in the CBIC invoice and credit/debit note rules. The rules prescribe additional details for some recipient and supply situations. An unregistered seller cannot issue a GST tax invoice, although it may provide a commercial invoice.
If your GSTIN or other details are missing
Recipient information requirements depend on whether you are registered and the type and value of the supply. For a registered recipient, the invoice rules include the recipient’s GSTIN or UIN. If your transaction qualifies for recipient details and the invoice is incomplete, ask the seller or platform to correct it.
#1 Best Overall
- Two-Part Carbonless Invoice Book: Each invoice book has 50 sets of invoices, each with a white/light yellow section, with the yellow section retained in the invoice book to maintain detailed records.
- Consecutively Numbered: Enlarged red 6-digit numbers in the upper right corner of each invoice receipt book help you quickly navigate through your orders.
- Wraparound Divider Flap: A thick folded cardboard divider is integrated into the back of each invoice book for use between each two-part sales order to prevent the written content from rubbing off on subsequent copies of the invoice, resulting in wasted invoices.
- 2 Packs/50 Sets (100 Sets Total): Each invoice book provides 50 sequentially numbered carbonless sets of 2 invoice books for long-term use.
- Customizable Space: Each invoice book for small business has space at the top to add a company seal or sticker.
Is GST included in the displayed online price?
Price display can vary by platform, listing and product category. Inspect the order’s price breakdown and final invoice rather than assuming every listing presents tax in the same way.
What a GST credit note means when an order changes
A supplier may issue a GST credit note in statutory circumstances, including when supplied goods are returned or when the taxable value or tax shown on an invoice is excessive. The credit note is linked to the original supply and forms part of the supplier’s tax records; it is not itself the transfer of money back to the buyer.

CBIC’s sectoral GST FAQs explain that returned taxable supplies reduce the net value used in an e-commerce operator’s relevant tax-collection calculation. That is accounting and reporting between the operator, supplier and government. It does not establish a buyer’s refund entitlement, refund method or processing date.
Cancellation before supply is different from a return
The GST Act provides a refund-voucher mechanism for certain advances when no supply is made and no tax invoice follows. Whether it applies depends on the transaction and current law; it should not be treated as a rule covering every marketplace cancellation. See the CBIC-published CGST Act text.

How the tax adjustment differs from your consumer refund
A credit note addresses the supplier’s GST accounting. The buyer’s payment refund is a separate consumer and order-process issue, governed by applicable consumer rules and the terms for that purchase. For an ordinary consumer return, you generally do not file a GST refund claim just because you returned an item; statutory GST refund applications concern defined taxpayer situations.
The Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020 state in Rule 6(3) that a marketplace e-commerce entity shall not refuse a return or refund in specified cases, including where goods or services are defective, deficient or spurious, do not match their advertised or agreed characteristics, or arrive later than the delivery schedule in the terms and conditions. The late-delivery provision has a force-majeure exception. The official 2020 rules text sets out that provision; the Department’s rules index lists later corrigendum and amendment materials. Check the current consolidated wording and the facts of your order before relying on a particular right. These rules do not create one GST-based refund deadline for all online purchases.

What to do if the invoice or return record is unclear
- Open the order details and locate the final invoice, not only the order confirmation or payment receipt.
- Check the supplier name and GSTIN, invoice number and date, item description, value and tax fields against the transaction.
- If the invoice is incomplete or the supplier identity is unclear, contact the seller or platform and request the correct invoice.
- If a returned order has no clear tax adjustment record, ask the seller or platform whether a corrected invoice or credit note was issued. Keep the invoice, order, payment, return and refund confirmations.
- For an unresolved consumer complaint, use the platform’s stated grievance channel and applicable consumer process. The exact steps and timing vary; no universal platform workflow is established here.
GST Portal GSTR-1 guidance explains taxpayer reporting, including outward supplies and credit/debit notes. It is not a universal set of instructions for downloading invoices from marketplaces.
