GST was the largest of the three reported tax heads: ₹25,049 crore, a 19% year-over-year increase. These figures are attributed to the state Commercial Taxes Department by The Times of India’s 2 October 2026 report.
What the reported 16% growth covers
The ₹44,372 crore figure combines three tax heads—GST, VAT and profession tax—for the first half of FY 2026–27, meaning April through September 2026. It is not a measure of all Telangana government receipts or of every tax stream. The newspaper reports a year-earlier combined total of ₹38,269 crore, making the increase ₹6,103 crore.

How GST, VAT and profession tax compare
| Tax head | April–September 2026 | April–September 2025 | Reported change |
|---|---|---|---|
| GST | ₹25,049 crore | ₹21,061 crore | Up 19%; increase of ₹3,988 crore |
| VAT | ₹18,824 crore | ₹16,708 crore | Up 13%; increase of ₹2,116 crore |
| Profession tax | ₹499 crore | Not stated in the report | Broadly unchanged; current figure described as provisional |
| Combined total | ₹44,372 crore | ₹38,269 crore | Up 16%; increase of ₹6,103 crore |
All figures and growth rates in the table are as reported by The Times of India on 2 October 2026. Its report says GST made up 56% of the three-head total. That denominator matters: the 56% is not GST’s share of all state revenue.
What is reported to be driving GST collections
Officials cited in the newspaper report identified automobiles, works contracts, construction and real-estate-related activity, finance and banking, and electronics and communication as sectors supporting GST receipts. The report supplies no sector-by-sector amounts, so it does not establish which contributed most or how much each added.
VAT, by contrast, is described in the report as arising primarily from petrol and liquor. Profession tax contributed a much smaller amount, and its reported ₹499 crore figure is provisional.

September collections were also higher
The same report puts combined GST, VAT and profession-tax receipts for September 2026 at ₹7,303 crore, up 15% from ₹6,368 crore in September 2025. The reported monthly breakdown was GST of ₹4,184 crore versus ₹3,646 crore, VAT of ₹3,045 crore versus ₹2,645 crore, and profession tax of ₹74 crore versus ₹77 crore.
These are one-month comparisons, not an additional measure of the six-month growth rate. As with the half-year amounts, they are figures attributed to department data by The Times of India.

How this compares with older Telangana tax data
Historical figures offer context but use definitions and periods that should not be conflated with the April–September 2026 report. Telangana’s Directorate of Economics and Statistics said in its November 2024 Telangana’s Economic Pulse that GST revenue through September had reached 42.2% of the FY25 budget estimate. It also reported 8.6% year-over-year GST growth in Q2 FY25. The publication’s GST measure includes the state’s share of CGST, so those historical indicators are not direct comparators for the department figures reported for FY 2026–27 unless the definitions are aligned.
The Times of India also summarized a CAG-based historical measure: SGST represented roughly 41–42% of Telangana’s own-tax revenue from 2019–20 through 2023–24, and own-tax collections in 2023–24 were ₹3,206 crore below budget estimates. Those figures concern different years and a different denominator from GST’s reported 56% share of the three tax heads in April–September 2026.
