Grok Imagine’s “Spicy Mode” was a reported 2025 feature, not a confirmed current standalone setting. xAI’s launch combined text-to-image, image-to-video and text-to-video generation, including short clips with audio, while allowing some adult or sexually suggestive outputs that mainstream services commonly restrict. Testing also found blocked, blurred and subject-specific results. In 2026, xAI’s official product story centers on the broader Imagine platform and Video 1.5, so old screenshots should not be treated as proof that Spicy Mode remains available.
What launched in August 2025
Grok Imagine was publicly reported on August 4, 2025, as an image and video generator integrated with Grok. Early coverage described several workflows:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Text-to-image generation.
- Animating a still image into a short video.
- Text-to-video generation.
- Follow-up editing and iteration inside the Grok interface.
- Video clips with generated, or “native,” audio.
- Continued image generation as a user scrolled through results.
The launch-period reports described videos of up to 15 seconds. xAI’s current consumer materials also advertise videos up to 15 seconds, but image resolution, video resolution, duration and model version are separate specifications. Current marketing lists text-to-video at 720p while advertising Imagine capabilities up to 2K; those figures should not be read as a promise that every video mode produces 2K output.

A later consumer-coalition filing, citing subsequent reporting, said Imagine became free to all users by August 7, 2025. Those were rollout conditions, not a permanent access policy. Current xAI documentation says Grok is free to start and that paid SuperGrok plans increase limits and unlock additional access.

What “Spicy Mode” actually meant
“Spicy” was reported as an optional setting that relaxed some adult-content restrictions. Early testing found that it could produce partially nude and some sexually explicit imagery. That does not mean every explicit request succeeded, or that the system was unmoderated.
- Some prompts produced a blurred or blocked result.
- Requests involving celebrities appeared to receive additional restrictions.
- Availability and behavior could vary by prompt, subject, app version, account and date.
The accurate description is therefore “a more permissive adult-content setting,” not “unfiltered porn generation.” A successful demonstration established what one tester obtained under particular conditions; it did not establish universal access or reproducibility.

Fast generation, uneven realism
Reporters found that images could be generated within seconds and then animated into stylized clips. Human subjects sometimes looked waxy or cartoon-like, especially when motion exposed weaknesses that were less obvious in a still image. Generated audio and speech were part of the appeal, but a product description is not an independent quality benchmark.
Real people created a different risk profile
Celebrity prompts were possible in some cases, while other requests were restricted. The most serious concern was not simply sexual material; it was the combination of sexual generation, recognizable people and image-to-video animation. A fabricated clip can be distributed as if it were authentic, even when the underlying model has made obvious mistakes.
An advocacy filing described a troubling test
A consumer coalition alleged that testing produced an uncensored topless Taylor Swift video without an explicit request for nudity. That is an attributed allegation and reported test result, not evidence that every user could reliably reproduce the output. The filing is available as a consumer-coalition request for investigation.
Why the launch became a safety and legal flashpoint
Non-consensual intimate imagery
Sexualizing a real person without consent can cause harassment, reputational damage and severe personal harm. Image-to-video tools make the material more convincing and easier to circulate, while social-platform distribution can amplify it rapidly.

Children and age assurance
The consumer coalition’s filing said the setting required a confirmation of adulthood. A birth-year question or an “I am 18 or over” button is not the same as robust age verification, and the filing should not be mistaken for an xAI technical specification. Systems that sexualize young-looking subjects present especially serious child-safety risks.
Privacy, likeness and commercial rights
Uploading someone’s photograph can involve processing personal data without that person’s consent. Generated likenesses can also raise publicity, endorsement, copyright and defamation disputes. A technically successful generation does not establish that publishing or selling it is lawful.
Platform and regulatory exposure
A permissive adult-content mode creates reputational and compliance risks for the provider, advertisers and distributors even if some outputs are blocked. Advocacy groups alleged potential violations; those allegations are not the same as a court ruling or regulator finding.
Rank #2
What safeguards were reported?
Contemporary reporting and the advocacy filing described several controls:
- Moderation or blurring for some explicit results.
- Additional restrictions on certain celebrity prompts.
- An adulthood confirmation before using the spicy setting, according to the coalition filing.
- Restrictions on applying the spicy option directly to real uploaded photographs, according to testing cited in that filing.
These controls were observed or reported at launch. They are not a guarantee of present behavior, and the age-confirmation detail came from an advocacy document rather than xAI’s published product specification.
How the current Imagine product differs
xAI’s current materials describe Grok as available on the web, iOS and Android, with Imagine presented as part of the general Grok product. On June 16, 2026, xAI announced Grok Imagine Video 1.5 and a faster consumer model, Video 1.5 Fast. xAI claims improvements in motion, physics, audio, speech clarity and synchronization; those are company assertions, not independently verified measurements.
The announcement says Video 1.5 Fast can produce a six-second 720p video in about 25 seconds, compared with more than 40 seconds for the prior model. Video 1.5 is generally available through the xAI API under the model name grok-imagine-video-1.5. The consumer announcement also highlights Projects, parallel agents and search across a user’s generated-media library.
The official model documentation lists resolution-based API rates of $0.08 per second at 480p, $0.14 per second at 720p and $0.25 per second at 1080p. At the listed 720p rate, a 10-second clip costs $1.40 before any other account charges or terms. The documentation lists availability in us-east-1 and us-west-2. API billing is separate from consumer subscriptions.

Is Spicy Mode still available?
Current official xAI pages reviewed for this article do not document a “Spicy Mode.” That does not prove the setting is unavailable everywhere: it could have been removed, renamed, region-limited, age-gated or confined to a particular app or account. It does mean that readers should not assume an old launch screenshot reflects the current web, iOS or Android experience.
For a current check, look at the feature controls in the relevant app or Grok Imagine surface and read the applicable policy. Do not infer entitlement from a 2025 article, and do not treat a single successful prompt as evidence of a stable product capability.
Choosing Grok Imagine for a real project
Check availability and workflow first
- Confirm whether the required mode is on web, iOS, Android or only in the API.
- Check country, account and age restrictions.
- Separate still-image, image-to-video and text-to-video limits.
- Verify duration, resolution, audio, export format and watermark behavior.
Evaluate rights and governance
- Do not upload or sexualize a real person without appropriate consent.
- Require human review before publishing generated media.
- Check reporting, deletion, provenance and data-retention controls.
- Obtain legal advice for commercial use of recognizable people or branded material.
Budget the correct product
Consumer access and API access have different economics. xAI’s current overview says paid plans draw from a shared weekly usage allowance across Grok features, while API cost scales with video duration and resolution. A subscription is not an unlimited generation budget, and an API rate is not a consumer-plan price.
How it compares with alternatives
| Product | Best fit | Key trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Grok Imagine | Chatbot-integrated, fast image/video experimentation with audio claims | Uncertainty around current Spicy availability and heightened safety and rights concerns |
| OpenAI Sora | Readers seeking a mainstream video-generation product | Verify current model, plan, duration and safety rules before buying |
| Google Veo and Flow | Users already working in Google’s AI ecosystem | Access can differ among Gemini, Flow and Vertex AI |
| Runway | Dedicated creator production, editing and team workflows | Less chatbot-first than Grok |
| Midjourney | Image-focused visual ideation | Check current video features and commercial terms separately |
| xAI API | Developers needing programmatic image-to-video generation | Per-second billing, regional availability and customer-managed moderation |
See Sora, Google Gemini, Google Flow, Vertex AI, Runway and Midjourney for their current product terms. The available evidence does not support a definitive 2026 quality ranking.
The practical verdict
Grok Imagine’s original distinction was not merely that it generated images and videos. Its reported willingness to relax some adult-content restrictions made the 2025 launch unusually permissive—and unusually exposed to non-consensual imagery, child-safety, privacy and likeness concerns. The modern product should be judged separately: verify the feature actually offered to your account, distinguish consumer limits from API pricing, and treat xAI’s performance claims as claims rather than independent test results.
