The deal was expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to closing conditions; as of October 2, it was not yet completed.
What Grindr agreed to buy
PurposeMed owns Freddie, a telehealth provider focused on PrEP and other sexual-health services. Grindr said the transaction includes Freddie’s brand and partnerships with affiliated clinical networks.
The announced plan is to add an opt-in PrEP care pathway to Grindr Health. Grindr users in the United States and Canada could choose services including PrEP education, coverage review, clinical assessment, clinician visits, testing, prescriptions when appropriate, medication delivery, refill management, reminders and communication with a care team. Freddie patients would also choose whether to use Grindr. The announcement does not establish identical eligibility, pricing or availability for every patient or region.

Both companies’ boards approved the agreement. Grindr said Freddie expected 2026 revenue above $80 million and adjusted EBITDA above $10 million. Those are management’s forward-looking expectations, not audited results, and Grindr said the acquisition’s effect on its own 2026 financial results would be immaterial.

What Freddie’s PrEP service involves
PrEP is prescription medicine for people who do not have HIV and may be exposed through sex or injection-drug use. A telehealth pathway can make access more convenient, but it remains clinical care rather than a one-time app transaction.
The announced care journey
- Learn about PrEP and review possible coverage or payment options.
- Complete a clinical assessment with an appropriate clinician.
- Obtain required HIV and other testing.
- Receive a prescription when clinically appropriate.
- Arrange medication delivery, refills, reminders and follow-up communication.
Grindr described the planned U.S. and Canadian offering as free or low-cost. It did not publish a universal price, insurance rule or eligibility policy, so an individual’s out-of-pocket cost cannot be determined from the acquisition announcement alone.

How effective PrEP is—and what it does not do
CDC guidance says oral PrEP reduces the risk of acquiring HIV through sex by about 99% when taken as prescribed. Injectable cabotegravir is also highly effective when administered as prescribed. These figures describe prevention efficacy under prescribed use, not a guarantee for every individual.
- PrEP is for people without HIV who may be exposed; an HIV test is required before starting.
- Ongoing clinical visits, testing and refills or injections are part of PrEP care.
- PrEP does not prevent other sexually transmitted infections or pregnancy.
- Missed doses, delayed injections or an unrecognized HIV infection can change clinical decisions and protection.
Can an at-home HIV test get you PrEP?
Not usually by itself. CDC says laboratory-based HIV testing is preferred for starting and continuing PrEP. Retail HIV self-tests are rapid antibody tests that can be used at home or in another private location, but their lower sensitivity for recent infection means they should not be used to start or maintain PrEP unless no other testing option is available. A positive self-test requires follow-up testing.

Grindr said users had ordered more than half a million free HIV self-test kits through its app, and that about a quarter of recipients reported never having taken an HIV test before. Those kits may help people begin testing, but they are not automatically a substitute for the clinical testing and monitoring required for PrEP.
Other services associated with Freddie
Freddie’s media materials describe categories beyond PrEP, including HIV care, DoxyPEP, herpes management, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and hair-loss treatment. These are Freddie service categories; the acquisition announcement’s central integration plan concerns an opt-in PrEP pathway and does not say that every category will be integrated into Grindr Health.

Why Grindr says the deal matters
Grindr presents the acquisition as an expansion of Grindr Health that could connect its user base with prevention care in a familiar app. In shareholder communications, management said it believed the healthcare business could eventually become as large as, or larger than, Grindr’s core business and similarly profitable. That is a management ambition, not an independently verified forecast.
The deal also gives Grindr an established telehealth operation, clinical-network relationships and a care workflow spanning assessment, testing, prescriptions and follow-up. Whether those advantages translate into broader access or financial growth will depend on the transaction closing, regulatory and operational execution, demand, reimbursement and patient retention.

- Whether the transaction will close on the expected timetable.
- Which users qualify in each U.S. state or Canadian province.
- The exact price after insurance, assistance programs or regional rules.
- Which oral or injectable PrEP options will be offered through the combined service.
- Which laboratories, pharmacies and delivery arrangements will be used.
- How Grindr and Freddie will handle consent, clinical records, retention and data sharing.
Participation is described as voluntary, but the reviewed announcements do not provide detailed privacy notices, data-flow diagrams or consent-screen language. Users should read the applicable clinical and privacy terms before enrolling.
