Tim Stevens’ 2026 review found it nimble in tight spaces, but also reported that aggressive turns can tear turf, maximum speed can compromise cut cleanliness, and inclines are its biggest challenge. Those trade-offs matter more than the motor count if you’re deciding whether it suits your property.
How the five-motor layout works
Greenworks’ 80V MZ5481 pairs two wheel-drive motors with three blade motors, according to Tim Stevens’ review for The Verge. Its 54-inch cutting swath is intended to cover ground quickly, while zero-turn steering helps maneuver around obstacles. The manufacturer lists a steel deck and a 1.5–4.5-inch cutting-height range.

The official product listing also gives the mower’s weight as 767 pounds. That is a specification, not a measure of how it will behave on every lawn: tire grip, terrain, moisture, and steering inputs all affect handling.
What the review found in use
Tight turns can damage turf
Stevens found the mower nimble in small spaces, but warned that a turn made too tightly can spin the inside tire and tear up grass. He described the result as looking as if he had been doing donuts in a pasture. That is a reviewer’s observation rather than a guarantee that the same damage will occur on every surface; it does show why a zero-turn mower needs controlled steering, especially on soft or vulnerable turf.

Maximum speed is not necessarily the cleanest cut
The review says mowing at maximum speed gets the job done quickly, but is not the best choice for a perfectly clean cut. If appearance matters more than finishing time, plan to adjust speed to conditions rather than assuming the fastest setting is ideal.
Inclines are the main handling concern
Stevens called inclines the mower’s biggest challenge and reported a 15-degree maximum grade as the official limit. He connected the concern to the 767-pound mower relying on its rear wheels for both drive and steering. A stated grade limit is not a promise of safe operation on every slope: surface condition and traction matter. Check the current owner’s manual for the exact model and follow its slope and operating instructions before mowing an incline.

Compare the exact bundle you intend to buy rather than combining figures from separate listings. The four-acre figure was a review-era claim, not an independently verified runtime test.
Who should consider the MaximusZ?
The mower’s wide deck and zero-turn layout may appeal to someone who wants to cover a sizable area and maneuver around obstacles. Whether it is a good fit depends on more than deck width: assess your slopes, turf conditions, desired cut quality, battery bundle, and the current price of that configuration.
