Greenlight is a paid family finance app and debit-card service for managing children’s allowance, chores, savings goals and spending. Its entry plan covers the core money-management tools; child stock and ETF investing starts with Max, while higher tiers add location, safety and household protection features. Whether it is worth the recurring fee depends on which of those tools your family will actually use.
Greenlight plans and prices
Greenlight’s current Help Center lists four monthly family plans. Each includes cards for up to five children; Family Shield can also include up to two older adults. These are per-family prices, not per-child prices.
| Plan | Monthly family price | What distinguishes it |
|---|---|---|
| Core | $5.99 | Allowance, chores, savings goals, spending controls and parent Investing Lite. |
| Max | $10.98 | Adds child investing, full parent investing and additional benefits. |
| Infinity | $15.98 | Adds location and safety features to the financial tools. |
| Family Shield | $19.98 | Broader household monitoring and protection features; can include up to two older adults. |
Prices and included features can change. Check Greenlight’s current plan and price information and its plan comparison before subscribing.
What Greenlight does for day-to-day money management
The core proposition is parent-managed money tools, rather than a standalone debit card. Parents can automate allowance, assign and manage chores, create savings goals, set spending controls and receive real-time purchase notifications. The idea is to give a child practical ways to handle money while keeping the parent involved in the account.

Those controls are the main reason to consider Core. If your household only needs a card, or will not use allowance, savings goals and oversight features, a monthly family subscription may be difficult to justify. Greenlight does not establish that using the app produces measured improvements in children’s financial knowledge or habits.
How investing works—and who owns the account
Child investing is available on Max, Infinity and Family Shield. Children can research and monitor real stocks and ETFs listed on the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ, then request trades. The primary account holder must review and place every trade; an Approver cannot place trades. Greenlight says the brokerage accounts opened through the app are in the primary account holder’s name, and that person is responsible for account taxes. The child feature should not be mistaken for a brokerage account owned by the child.

On Core, Investing for Parents Lite gives the primary account holder access to 10 ETFs. Full Investing for Parents is included on Max and the higher plans. Greenlight warns that investments involve risk, are not FDIC-insured and can lose value. Approval controls do not remove investment risk.
Banking, card protections and safety features
Greenlight is a financial technology company, not a bank. Its app facilitates banking services through Community Federal Savings Bank, Member FDIC; Greenlight says the card is issued by that bank under a Mastercard license. Do not assume that every Greenlight product is a bank deposit: investments, in particular, are not FDIC-insured.

Location and safety features are tier-dependent, rather than part of the entry Core plan. Greenlight describes family location sharing and alerts, SOS and crash detection, and driving reports among its higher-tier tools. Family Shield also markets credit monitoring and locks, financial-account and dark-web monitoring, identity-theft and deceptive-transfer fraud coverage, and phone protection. These are benefits subject to plan terms and applicable coverage limits, not unconditional guarantees. Review the relevant terms to understand what is covered.
Savings rewards and cash back have conditions
Greenlight’s published savings reward rates are 2% per annum for Core, 3% for Max, 5% for Infinity and 6% for Family Shield. The rates apply to an average daily savings balance up to $5,000 per family, not to an unlimited balance. To qualify, the primary account must be in good standing and have a verified, linked ACH funding account; Greenlight defines good standing to include fees paid and no negative balance in the wallet or member account. Rates may change, so check Greenlight’s current plan and reward terms before relying on them.

Qualifying Max, Infinity and Family Shield families can also earn 1% cash back on monthly spending, subject to Greenlight’s terms. Treat both the savings reward and cash back as conditional benefits, not guaranteed returns.

Greenlight includes one non-customized card per child and one free replacement card per family each calendar year. Further replacement cards cost $5.99 each. A custom card costs $9.99 plus applicable taxes. Expedited shipping costs $24.99 plus applicable taxes and is described as taking two to three business days. Greenlight says standard cards typically arrive in 7–10 business days.
Best Value
- It can be a gift option
- Comes with secure packaging
- Helpful in various ways
Closing the account is necessary to stop the monthly subscription fee. If you stop using the service, do not assume that simply removing the app or leaving the account idle ends billing; follow Greenlight’s account-closure process.
Who can sign up?
Greenlight’s sign-up requirements are US-focused. The adult account holder must be at least 18, have a US residential address and US phone number, and pass identity verification. Greenlight says verification is required before activating the wallet, cards and investing. The service is therefore not presented as a generally available international account.
Which Greenlight plan makes sense?
- Consider Core if you want allowance, chore management, savings goals and spending controls, and parent Investing Lite is sufficient.
- Consider Max if child investing or full parent investing is important enough to warrant the higher recurring fee.
- Consider Infinity if you also expect to use its location and safety features.
- Consider Family Shield if the broader household monitoring and protection benefits—including the option to add older adults—fit your needs and you have checked their terms.
Before choosing, weigh the family subscription against the features you will use, the number and ages of household members, and any card or shipping costs. Compare savings rewards only after checking their balance cap and eligibility. Greenlight’s published terms explain its own plans, but do not by themselves establish that it is better value than competing family finance products.
