The right greenhouse emergency supplies depend on which systems your crops need most: heat, ventilation, water, or structural protection. Start by identifying what must keep running during an outage, then choose backup equipment that fits those loads and the season’s risks. A battery-powered temperature alarm can buy time to respond, but it cannot replace heat or power.
Start with the failures that could threaten your greenhouse
Greenhouses rely on electricity for fans, water pumps, heating equipment, and controls. UF/IFAS Extension puts it plainly: “Most greenhouses require fans, water pumps, heating equipment for operation.” Which systems are critical depends on the structure, crop, climate, and time of year.

Make an inventory before buying equipment. Record each essential device’s nameplate voltage, phase, running current, and motor horsepower, and note which devices must operate at the same time. Separate must-run loads from equipment you can pause. Include the systems you depend on in both cold and warm weather: winter outages can disable heating, while summer outages can stop ventilation, cooling, or irrigation.
Choose backup power for the actual electrical load
Standby or portable generator
A standby generator is one option for keeping essential greenhouse equipment operating. It must be selected for the combination of loads you intend to run, not for a generic greenhouse size. A portable generator may suit some small operations, but the right choice depends on equipment and installation requirements.

Account for motor startup
Running load is not the whole calculation. UF/IFAS Extension says motor starting amperage may be two to seven times the running amount; use that as a warning to check the actual motor and generator specifications, not as a substitute for them. The largest or most heavily loaded motor may need to start first. Have the simultaneous load and startup requirements evaluated rather than relying on a generator’s advertised wattage alone.
Plan the connection and fuel
A standby arrangement includes a generator and transfer switch. Generator connections, wiring, voltage and phase compatibility, and applicable local electrical requirements need qualified attention. Also consider generator placement and exhaust, fuel type and availability, storage and replenishment, maintenance, and who will start and monitor the equipment. UF/IFAS recommends discussing the installation with an electrician; installation details can differ between hobby structures and commercial systems.

Add a temperature alarm for earlier warning
A battery-powered greenhouse temperature alarm can alert you when temperature moves outside a chosen range or heating fails. UGA Cooperative Extension describes warning devices as useful insurance and notes battery-powered alarms as one option. An alarm is a signal to act, not a system that restores heat or electricity.

Prepare for frost and frozen water systems
For crops that need protection, keep crop-appropriate frost fabric or covers on hand and support them as the setup requires. A cover may help protect plants, but it does not replace a tested heating contingency for a crop that needs heat. Suitability depends on the crop and structure; no particular cover performance or material rating is established here.

Before freezing weather, check backup greenhouse heat and fuel. Drain irrigation lines, hoses, pumps, and sprayers that could freeze, and insulate exposed pipes if a water system must remain in service. These steps help protect both the crop and the equipment needed to water it.
Keep covering and drainage ready for weather damage
Inspect greenhouse coverings and repair tears. UF/IFAS’s greenhouse heating checklist recommends repairing plastic tears and keeping replacement polytube available. A repair tape or patch kit can be useful for film, but match it to the covering material and manufacturer guidance. Tape is a temporary repair supply, not a way to make a damaged structure windproof or a substitute for structural repair.

Redundant installed heat, portable space heaters, and arrangements to rent emergency heating equipment are examples of contingency options in Alberta’s greenhouse best-management-practices guide. They are planning categories, not a recommendation for a particular heater or rental provider. Any heater must be suitable for the greenhouse environment and installed and operated safely. UF/IFAS notes that heating systems must avoid harmful fumes; do not use combustion equipment without appropriate exhaust and safety controls.

Keep supplies usable before an emergency
Equipment that has not been maintained or tested may fail when it is needed. UConn Extension recommends checking and maintaining backup systems and checking their functionality seasonally. Keep fuel available, check generator condition and battery, exercise backup systems as appropriate to manufacturer guidance, and keep written outage procedures where the people responsible can find them.
