Green Tint on Kodi: How to Diagnose and Fix Green Video

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A green picture in Kodi can come from hardware decoding, HDR or Dolby Vision handling, a particular video file, or the HDMI display chain; it is not one universal Kodi bug. First check whether Kodi’s menus are green too. If only video is affected, temporarily turn off the relevant hardware-acceleration option and replay the same file. If that fixes it, the decoder, renderer, driver, or display-conversion path is implicated.

Identify what is turning green

The appearance narrows the possibilities, but color alone cannot prove the cause. Compare Kodi’s menus with video, and check whether the problem affects every file or only one format.

What you see Where to investigate first
Solid green video while menus look normal Video decoder, renderer, graphics driver, or format support.
Recognizable picture with a green overlay Color-plane decoding, HDR or Dolby Vision conversion, or another color-conversion path.
Green-purple picture, especially on a Dolby Vision file Dolby Vision profile and device support, including whether the file has an HDR10 fallback.
Green bands or duplicated images Hardware decoding, interlacing, renderer, or a damaged file.
Brief green flash at playback start, stop, seek, or refresh-rate change Display-mode change, HDR handshake, or renderer transition.
Only MPEG-2 files show green artifacts On Linux systems, test the MPEG-2 VAAPI decoder setting.
Kodi menus, thumbnails, and video are all green TV, GPU output, HDMI cable or port, AVR/switch, operating-system color settings, or display hardware.

If Kodi’s interface is green, exit Kodi and check another application or HDMI source. If that is green too, focus on the display chain rather than Kodi’s video decoder.

Check whether one file or a whole class of video fails

Compare the problem video with a known-good SDR H.264 file and, if available, a 4K HEVC/H.265 file. Note the codec, resolution, bit depth, HDR format, and whether Dolby Vision is present. The pattern helps separate a file problem from a general playback problem:

  • One file: Check its integrity and metadata before changing global settings.
  • Only MPEG-2 on a VAAPI system: Test the MPEG-2-specific setting described below.

Kodi’s video settings documentation warns that some MPEG-2 videos can show green artifacts when MPEG-2 VAAPI decoding is enabled.

Try the quickest reversible test: hardware acceleration

Change one setting at a time, then replay the same file. Kodi’s menu labels and available options vary by platform and settings level.

Windows: test DXVA2

  1. Open Settings → Player → Videos → Processing.
  2. Temporarily turn off Allow hardware acceleration – DXVA2.
  3. Replay the affected file and compare the image.
  4. Restore the setting if it does not help.

DXVA2 is a Windows-specific hardware-decoding option; these instructions do not apply to Android TV, Linux, or smart-TV installations. If turning it off fixes the picture, update Kodi and the graphics driver before deciding whether to keep it disabled. Software decoding can raise CPU use and cause stutter, dropped frames, fan noise, or poor performance on demanding 4K or high-bitrate video.

Linux: isolate VAAPI by codec

If only MPEG-2 content is affected, turn off Use MPEG-2 VAAPI first and retest, rather than disabling every hardware-decoding option. If other codecs are affected, test Allow hardware acceleration – VAAPI separately. Keep other acceleration options enabled when possible.

Android: compare available MediaCodec options

Some Kodi builds and devices expose MediaCodec and MediaCodec (Surface). Test one option at a time if available. Options differ across devices, and turning off hardware decoding may make 4K or HDR playback impractical on low-powered hardware.

Test the renderer and display-mode transitions

If your platform exposes a Render method setting, compare its available choices, such as Auto detect, Software, or a platform-specific hardware renderer. Older Kodi forum reports describe green playback changing after a renderer adjustment, but these are historical reports, not a universal fix: Windows green-screen discussion and color and brightness discussion. Restore the default if the alternate method does not help. Software rendering can be useful diagnostically, but it may increase CPU load; hardware paths are more efficient but rely on the GPU, driver, and platform implementation.

If the green flash appears only when playback starts or stops, temporarily turn off Adjust display refresh rate. Where available, compare On start with On start/stop, and test windowed fullscreen versus true fullscreen. Kodi changes display mode when refresh-rate adjustment is enabled; HDR switching and HDMI renegotiation can make transitions more sensitive. A brief flash does not by itself mean the file is damaged. See Kodi’s player settings for the refresh-rate option.

Separate HDR and Dolby Vision from ordinary video

Compare HDR handling

On a platform where Kodi detects an HDR-capable display, go to Settings → Player → Videos → Adjust display HDR mode. Kodi documents that On switches the display’s HDR mode to match the video; Off keeps the display’s current HDR mode and applies tone mapping as needed. Test the same file with this option changed, then compare the result with an SDR file. Do not assume that leaving the operating system’s HDR mode permanently on or off is right for every setup: the result depends on which component performs conversion and whether the full display chain supports the signal.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check whether the TV actually changes into HDR or Dolby Vision mode during playback. If refresh-rate switching is also involved, test a fixed display mode such as 23.976/24 Hz or 30 Hz. Windows HDR, fullscreen behavior, GPU output format, refresh rate, and AVR passthrough can interact; Kodi forum discussions cover these variables in HDR configuration and Windows 11 HDR behavior.

Check Dolby Vision compatibility separately

A green or green-purple picture limited to Dolby Vision files can indicate that the device cannot correctly decode or convert that file’s profile. “Kodi supports Dolby Vision” is not enough to establish compatibility: it depends on Kodi version, operating system, device chipset, TV, profile, decoder path, and whether the file includes an HDR10 fallback layer.

  • Confirm the file’s Dolby Vision profile and whether it also contains HDR10 fallback.
  • Check that the TV and playback device support the relevant format and profile.
  • Compare with a compatible HDR10 file and, if available, the TV’s native player.
  • If only the Dolby Vision file fails, consider a compatible HDR10 version or playback device rather than changing every Kodi setting.

Kodi 21 introduced on-the-fly Dolby Vision profile conversion for some Android playback scenarios, but this does not mean every platform and profile is supported. The Kodi 21.0 release notes, Kodi 22 Alpha 3 notes, and a Kodi forum Dolby Vision discussion reflect platform-specific behavior and ongoing changes.

Check the HDMI chain and color range

A range or color-space mismatch more often causes grey-looking blacks, crushed blacks, or incorrect brightness than a wholly green picture, but it is worth checking when the symptom is a general color cast. Kodi’s display settings documentation explains that incorrect color-space configuration can make blacks appear grey.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Set Kodi, the GPU, and TV to Auto for color range where possible.
  2. Check that RGB versus YCbCr output and the TV’s HDMI black-level/range setting are not mismatched.
  3. Temporarily connect the playback device directly to the TV, bypassing an AVR, soundbar, or HDMI switch.
  4. Try a different HDMI input and cable as an isolation test.
  5. Restore custom color settings that did not affect the result.

Do not force full range everywhere: the devices must agree, and a mismatch can make the picture worse. An HDMI cable is one possible part of the chain, not the default explanation for a green decoder image.

Update Kodi and the device software

As of August 18, 2026, Kodi’s official Windows and Android download pages identify Kodi 21.3 “Omega” as the recommended stable release. Kodi 22 “Piers” Beta 1 is prerelease software, not the default troubleshooting recommendation. Check the official Windows or Android download page for your platform and the Kodi 21.3 release notes. Back up userdata before a major upgrade if the installation contains important configuration. Do not install unofficial “fully loaded” builds as a fix; they add variables unrelated to the playback fault.

Update the GPU driver from the GPU or computer manufacturer on Windows, then reboot. If the tint began directly after a driver update, test a rollback where supported. For Android TV, Linux, Raspberry Pi, Xbox, webOS, and other embedded devices, check the device firmware and the platform-specific Kodi release rather than applying Windows instructions. Kodi 21.2 included Windows HDR and wide-color-gamut fixes, and Kodi 21.3 added HDR support on Xbox One; those changes illustrate why fixes vary by platform (21.2 notes, 21.3 notes).

  • If only one file fails, check whether it is damaged, partially downloaded, unusually encoded, or Dolby Vision-only.

Different players may use different decoders, tone-mapping paths, and fallback behavior, so a successful comparison does not by itself prove Kodi is defective. Check the file’s codec and HDR metadata with a media-information tool, compare local playback with network playback, and try a remux or alternate known-good file before changing global settings.

What to send with a Kodi support request

If the tests do not isolate the cause, gather enough detail for someone to reproduce the failure instead of reinstalling Kodi at random:

  • Kodi version, operating system and version, device model, and GPU or chipset.
  • TV/monitor model and whether an AVR, soundbar, switch, or capture device is in the HDMI path.
  • File codec, resolution, bit depth, HDR format, and Dolby Vision profile if applicable.
  • Whether menus are affected, whether audio continues, and whether all files fail.
  • Which acceleration, renderer, HDR, refresh-rate, and direct-HDMI tests changed the symptom.
  • A Kodi debug log uploaded through Kodi’s supported diagnostic process.

Platform clues

Windows

Start with DXVA2, GPU drivers, HDR mode switching, fullscreen behavior, and RGB/YCbCr output. Kodi once fixed a green-screen problem on old hardware with DX feature level 9.1 when playing 10-bit video; that is historical evidence, not proof that Kodi 21.3 has the same fault. See the Kodi 19.1 release notes.

Android and Google TV

Compare the available MediaCodec paths and verify that the particular box or TV supports the file’s HDR or Dolby Vision format. Kodi’s Android download page cautions that successful operation depends on the device’s capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Linux and Raspberry Pi

Check VAAPI or the platform’s hardware decoder, especially MPEG-2 VAAPI for MPEG-2-only artifacts. Colorimetry, limited-range configuration, graphics stack, firmware, and embedded rendering paths can also vary by distribution and hardware.

Xbox and webOS

Use the platform-specific stable Kodi release and check its release notes. Kodi 21.3 lists HDR support added for Xbox One (release notes). Kodi on a smart TV does not necessarily use the same decoder and display path as Kodi on an external box; see the webOS download page. Kodi 22 prerelease notes include platform-specific HDR and Dolby Vision work, but those changes do not establish a fix for stable releases (Beta 1, Alpha 2).
