The object, WD J1330+6435, is a cool, dense stellar remnant about 4,000 °C. Its green appearance is not a direct telescope image: researchers reconstructed it from the star’s spectrum and a model of human color vision.
The University of Warwick team reports the result in Any colour you like: The diverse chromaticities of white dwarfs, published in RAS Techniques and Instruments (DOI: 10.1093/rasti/rzag069). The work shows that white dwarfs can have a much wider range of perceived colors than their name suggests.

How can a star be green?
WD J1330+6435 is a white dwarf—the compact remnant left after a star like the Sun exhausts its nuclear fuel and sheds its outer layers. Although its interior is extremely dense, its visible light passes through a thin atmosphere where atoms and molecules remove particular wavelength ranges.
This white dwarf’s atmosphere contains unusually high amounts of calcium, lithium and sodium. The material was accreted from rocky debris in its former planetary system. Sodium absorbs much of the orange part of the spectrum. When the remaining light is converted into the color signals a human eye would receive, the result is a ghostly chartreuse-green appearance.

The density of a white-dwarf atmosphere matters. In such compressed gas, trace elements can absorb across broader wavelength ranges than they would in the lower-density atmospheres of ordinary stars. That makes small amounts of atmospheric pollution capable of shifting the star’s perceived color dramatically.
Did astronomers actually see a green star?
Not directly. No white dwarf is close enough for its color to be resolved by human vision through a telescope. Warwick’s researchers used routinely collected spectra—measurements of how much light arrives at each wavelength—and calculated the color that a typical human observer would perceive. “Green” therefore describes a modelled visual appearance, not a photograph or an unaided-eye observation.

This distinction does not make the finding imaginary. The spectrum records the physical absorption caused by sodium and the other atmospheric constituents; the human-vision model translates those measurements into a standardized perceived color.

What the local white-dwarf sample shows
The team examined 151 white dwarfs within 20 parsecs (about 65 light-years) of Earth. Five objects had clearly unusual calculated colors: two appeared yellow and three appeared pink. The remaining representative objects had a median color temperature of approximately 6,800 K and were perceived as white.

| Finding | Reported value |
|---|---|
| Nearby white dwarfs studied | 151 within 20 parsecs (about 65 light-years) |
| Objects with unusual colors | 5: two yellow and three pink |
| Estimated share with unusual coloring | Roughly 1 in 30 white dwarfs |
| Median color temperature of the representative remainder | Approximately 6,800 K, perceived as white |
That fraction means unusual colors may be uncommon for an individual star but numerous across the Universe’s huge white-dwarf population. The median remains white, explaining why the conventional name is still broadly accurate.
Why white dwarfs can look pink, purple or blue
The same spectral analysis found that atmospheric chemistry—not just surface temperature—controls much of a white dwarf’s visible hue.

- Carbon-rich atmospheres: carbon absorption can push the calculated color toward pink or purple.
- Planetary-debris pollution: accreted heavy elements can create yellow or, in WD J1330+6435, greenish colors.
- Mixed hydrogen-helium atmospheres: their spectral balance can produce cyan or pale blue appearances.
These colors are signatures of composition and stellar history. Atmospheric pollutants can reveal that a planetary system survived its star’s transformation and that rocky material is still falling onto the remnant.

Warwick also identifies WD J1011+2845, about 48 light-years away, as a possible record-red star. In this object, a deep convection zone dredges carbon up from the core. Carbon molecules distort the outgoing light so strongly that almost all of the modelled output lies beyond 600 nanometres, yielding a deep salmon-pink appearance.

Can you see the green star from Earth?
You cannot see WD J1330+6435 as a green point with the unaided eye, and a telescope image would not independently show the claimed color. Its designation and the spectroscopy used by the Warwick team identify it scientifically; the green label is the calculated appearance under human color vision. Observers would need calibrated spectroscopic data and the same type of color-conversion model to reproduce the result.
Why call them white dwarfs if some are colored?
“White dwarf” describes the object’s evolutionary status, not a guarantee that every spectrum appears neutral white. Most white dwarfs in the nearby sample cluster around a white perceived color, so the traditional term fits the typical case. A minority acquire strong color shifts when dense-atmosphere absorption, carbon chemistry or planetary debris changes their spectra.
The discovery therefore expands the known palette without overturning the basic picture: white dwarfs are usually white, but their atmospheres preserve clues to both their interiors and the planetary systems that once surrounded them.
