Green, Pink and Purple: Astronomers Reveal the Surprising True Colors of White Dwarf Stars

White dwarfs are not always white or blue. New University of Warwick modeling finds that unusual atmospheric chemistry and extreme density can make some of these stellar remnants appear green, yellow, cyan, pink or purple when their spectra are translated into human color vision. The average white dwarf in a representative nearby sample still appears white, but roughly one in 30 is an unusual-color outlier.

What color are white dwarf stars really?

A white dwarf’s apparent color is usually treated as a thermometer. For most stars, including most white dwarfs, the spectrum is close to that of a thermal “perfect radiator,” so hotter objects look bluer and cooler objects look redder. The University of Warwick study shows that this rule breaks down when a white dwarf’s atmosphere contains unusual elements or molecules.

The result is a modeled palette that includes colors rarely associated with stars: chartreuse green, deep salmon-pink, purple, yellow and cyan. These are inferred colors, not naked-eye observations. No white dwarf is close enough to be seen directly as a colored disk; astronomers measure its spectrum and calculate how a human observer would combine those wavelengths.

How astronomers infer a star’s color

The study, reported by the University of Warwick on October 14, 2026, used spectra already collected for nearby white dwarfs. Researchers converted each star’s spectral energy distribution through a model of human color vision. This approach accounts for the fact that color depends on the balance of wavelengths reaching the eye, not simply on a single temperature value.

White-dwarf atmospheres can be extraordinarily dense. In the coolest objects, the atmosphere can approach 1 gram per cubic centimeter—about the density of water and millions of times denser than the Sun’s photosphere. Under those conditions, collisions and pressure broaden the absorption features of trace elements. Carbon, calcium, sodium and other atoms can remove wide ranges of wavelengths rather than producing narrow lines, changing the overall hue.

Why chemistry creates green, pink and purple stars

Modeled appearance Atmosphere or process Example and explanation
Chartreuse or ghostly green Rocky-debris pollution; pressure-broadened sodium absorption WD J1330+6435 is modeled at about 4,000 °C (7,232 °F). Calcium-, lithium- and sodium-rich debris from rocky material entered its atmosphere, and sodium removed much of the orange spectrum, leaving green light relatively prominent.
Pink or purple Carbon-rich helium atmosphere; molecular absorption Convection can dredge carbon from the core into a helium envelope. C2 molecules absorb blue, green and yellow wavelengths. WD J0902+2010 is an example.
Deep salmon-pink Very carbon-rich atmosphere WD J1011+2845, about 48 light-years away, may be among the reddest stars recorded. Its carbon molecules push most modeled optical output beyond roughly 600 nanometers.
Yellow Pollution by shattered asteroids or comets Debris adds absorbing elements that shift the integrated spectrum toward yellow.
Cyan or pale blue Cool mixed hydrogen-helium atmosphere Collisions involving hydrogen molecules and helium reshape the spectrum, producing a cooler cyan or pale-blue appearance.
Pale blue Hot hydrogen atmosphere Sirius B provides the familiar comparison: its hydrogen-dominated atmosphere gives it a pale-blue appearance.

The first modeled green white dwarf

WD J1330+6435 is the clearest example of a genuinely green white dwarf in the modeling. At approximately 4,000 °C, it is cool by white-dwarf standards. Its atmosphere contains material consistent with accreted rocky debris, including calcium, lithium and sodium. Sodium absorbs orange wavelengths; after that absorption is applied to the star’s full spectrum, the calculated color shifts toward chartreuse.

Study lead Dr. Mark Hollands described the effect as “a ghostly green glow,” adding that imagining a green star in a planetary sky feels like science fiction. The color does not mean the star emits only green light. It means the wavelength mixture that survives atmospheric absorption would stimulate human color receptors that way.

Carbon can turn a white dwarf pink or purple

Some helium-atmosphere white dwarfs become carbon-rich as convection reaches deeper layers and carries carbon upward from the remnant’s core. Carbon molecules, especially C2, absorb broad bands across the blue, green and yellow parts of visible light. The remaining balance is perceived as pink, purple or, in the most extreme case, salmon.

WD J1011+2845 is about 48 light-years from Earth. Its modeled optical output is concentrated mostly at wavelengths longer than approximately 600 nanometers, making it an especially red-looking outlier. WD J0902+2010 represents the broader carbon-rich pink/purple group.

How common are unusual colors?

Warwick researchers examined 151 white dwarfs within 20 parsecs, or about 65 light-years. Five objects had unusual modeled colors: two yellow and three pink. That is roughly one in 30 in this representative local sample. The other 146 had a median color temperature of about 6,800 kelvin and were perceived as white.

Professor Boris Gänsicke emphasized the distinction between a striking minority and the population average: one in 30 is a small fraction, but it still represents many objects across the universe. The median white dwarf remains white, so the study does not overturn the ordinary color description; it identifies the atmospheric conditions that produce exceptions.

What the colors reveal about white-dwarf history

Color is a clue to composition and evolution rather than a decorative label. A yellow or green spectrum can indicate that the remnant is accreting material from disrupted asteroids, comets or other rocky bodies. Pink and purple hues point toward carbon being mixed into a helium envelope. Cyan colors can signal the spectral effects of hydrogen molecules colliding with helium in a cool atmosphere.

Because these effects depend on density, molecular physics and the history of material falling onto the star, two white dwarfs with similar temperatures can have different apparent colors. Conversely, a color alone is not a complete chemical measurement; astronomers combine the modeled hue with detailed spectral features and atmospheric calculations.

What this changes about “blue versus white”

Descriptions of white dwarfs as white or blue remain valid for the majority. Hot hydrogen-atmosphere objects such as Sirius B look pale blue, while a typical nearby white dwarf in the Warwick sample is white at about 6,800 K color temperature. The new result adds a qualification: temperature sets the baseline, but dense atmospheres and trace chemistry can strongly reshape the observed spectrum.

The underlying paper, “Any colour you like: The diverse chromaticities of white dwarfs,” was published in RAS Techniques and Instruments in 2026 (DOI: 10.1093/rasti/rzag069). Its central lesson is that stellar color is both a thermometer and a record of atmospheric physics.
