For a quick, self-contained introduction to Hal Jordan, start with Green Lantern: First Flight (2009). It tells his origin and induction into the Green Lantern Corps. The films and shows are separate adaptations, so there is no required franchise-wide watch order; use release order if you want a simple way to sample them.

- Prefer an episodic space adventure? Try Green Lantern: The Animated Series (2011–2013). DC describes Hal Jordan’s story as taking place on the Guardian Frontier, where he faces an invasion by the Red Lantern Corps. DC’s series page
- Looking for live action? Green Lantern (2011), starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan, is the standalone live-action feature in this selection. Whether it suits you is a matter of taste.
- Interested in a newer DCU story? DC announced Lanterns as a live-action series featuring Hal Jordan and John Stewart. It belongs to the newer interconnected DCU context, not a single continuity shared by every Green Lantern adaptation. DC’s January 31, 2023 announcement

This order is a convenient sampler of standalone Green Lantern screen stories, not an official canon sequence. The JustWatch US guide uses this scope and excludes titles where a Lantern primarily appears as part of a team.

Do the shows and movies share a continuity?
The sources do not establish one universal continuity or an essential chronological sequence across these adaptations. Treat each as its own screen version: you can watch one without completing the others. Release order is useful for exploring the franchise’s screen history, but it is not a prerequisite list.

Justice League and Justice League Unlimited are optional team-based viewing if you want more Lantern appearances, particularly John Stewart. What to watch before Lanterns
No older screen adaptation is established as required preparation for Lanterns. DC’s 2023 announcement identifies Hal Jordan and John Stewart as the series’ two leads and frames it within an interconnected DC universe; it also distinguishes projects outside that shared continuity. Co-chairman and CEO Peter Safran described it as “more of a True Detective-type mystery with our two Lanterns.” That description is a tone comparison, not a viewing prerequisite.

Optional comic reading for Hal and John
If you want character context beyond the screen, DC recommends Hal Jordan and John Stewart’s first meeting in Green Lantern #87 (1971), the Green Lantern: No Fear story arc, and Green Lantern: Earth One. DC explicitly says Lanterns is not an adaptation of Earth One, so none of these comics is required homework. DC’s Hal Jordan and John Stewart background

Streaming rights vary by country and change over time. JustWatch’s US guide, updated September 25, 2026, reported a service check on October 4, 2026; at that check, five of its six listed titles were available through the HBO Max Amazon Channel, with other titles appearing on additional services. The guide also showed digital purchase and physical DVD or Blu-ray options for at least some entries. These are dated US listings, not a guarantee of current or local availability.
