A republished CNET-titled review says three editors found its recipes clearer, ingredients well portioned and in good condition, and meals flavorful—but also flagged higher-than-average prices, occasional longer prep times, portions some diners may find small, and single-use plastic. Whether it is worth paying more depends on the current checkout total and whether the menu suits your household.
What Green Chef delivers
Subscribers choose meals and serving counts, then receive ingredients and recipes to cook at home. Green Chef describes a changing weekly menu and says its grocery page offers 10 or more recipes per week; that is a statement about the page, not a guarantee that every week will have the same selection. See Green Chef’s grocery page for the service description and menu information.

Green Chef says it is the first CCOF-certified organic meal-kit company. That is the company’s own formulation, not evidence that every ingredient in every box is certified organic. A title-matched CNET review republication characterizes the service as mostly organic. The practical approach is to check the ingredient details for the specific meals you are considering. Green Chef’s official homepage describes its plans and positioning.
What the three editors reported
The review material appeared in a secondary republication of the CNET-titled article, so these are findings attributed to the CNET editors—not independent testing for this article. In that test, the editors reported simpler, clearer recipes, ingredients arriving in good condition and accurately portioned, reasonable prep times overall, and good flavor and nutritional quality. They also came away with a stronger value impression than in an earlier testing round. Read the republished CNET-titled review.
#1 Best Overall
- Say “I love you” with the gift of simple, tasty meals.
- If you're signing up with Home Chef for the first time, enter your gift card code during the registration process to redeem it.
- If you're an existing customer, apply your gift card by clicking 'My Account' in the upper right corner and then selecting 'Redeem a Gift Card.'
- Redemption: Online Only
- No returns and no refunds on gift cards.
- Cooking experience: The instructions were clearer and simpler in the reported test. Some individual recipes still took longer than the website’s suggested time.
- Ingredients and portions: Ingredients arrived in good condition and were accurately portioned for the recipes. That does not mean every diner will consider the finished serving large enough.
- Flavor and nutrition: The editors described both favorably; the review does not establish that the meals meet any particular person’s medical or nutritional needs.
- Packaging: Reviewers noticed substantial single-use plastic. They described the box, cooler, and ice packs as recyclable, but that observation is not a full environmental or lifecycle assessment.
What Green Chef may cost—and why old prices mislead
Published review prices differ by date and should not be treated as a current quote. The CNET-titled review republication reported $11.99 per serving plus a flat $11 shipping fee per box in 2025. A USA TODAY review published May 15, 2026 and updated September 4, 2026 reported $13.99 per serving. These are dated snapshots, not a single like-for-like current price; prices and order details can change. Check the current menu and checkout total before subscribing. See USA TODAY’s review for its dated price report.
To judge value, compare the complete amount due for your chosen box—not just the per-serving figure—with the meals and servings you will actually use. The editors’ improved value impression in their later test is a reviewer judgment, not a finding that Green Chef is inexpensive for every household.

Does the menu fit your diet?
Green Chef’s official pages describe menu options and filters for approaches including plant-based, keto, gluten-free, and dairy-free, among others. Availability is tied to the changing menu, so a filter does not guarantee that a suitable meal will be available in a particular week. Nor is a menu label a medical guarantee: inspect each recipe’s ingredients and allergen information, especially if you have an allergy, intolerance, or other strict dietary requirement.
Household size, delivery, and scheduling
The republished review describes plans for two, four, or six servings per meal and three or four meal kits per week. It also reports delivery to nearly all U.S. ZIP codes, with Alaska, Hawaii, and some parts of Louisiana excluded. These details can change; confirm serving options, your address, and delivery availability directly with Green Chef before planning around a box.

Meal kits require time to cook. The test found preparation reasonable overall, but some recipes exceeded the time suggested online. If your schedule is tight, review the individual recipe instructions and treat suggested prep times as estimates rather than guarantees. Green Chef is a better fit for someone willing to cook than for someone seeking meals that arrive ready to eat.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to decide whether Green Chef is worth it
- It may suit you if you want to cook at home, find meals that match your preferences in the current menu, and value the reported recipe clarity and ingredient quality enough to accept the total box cost.
- Think twice if keeping meal costs low is the priority, you need consistently generous portions, or you have little tolerance for prep taking longer than estimated.
- Check before ordering if organic certification, allergen control, delivery coverage, or packaging disposal is decisive. Confirm the claims and details that matter for the specific meals and location rather than relying on a general service description.
For a fair comparison with another meal kit, line up the full weekly cost including shipping, number of meals and servings, recipes available for your dietary needs, actual cooking time, portions, and packaging. The cited review material does not establish a head-to-head winner against named competitors.
