Grasshopper is a virtual business phone service for small businesses that want a separate business number on phones or computers they already own. Its appeal is simplicity: a professional number, extensions, call routing, and messaging without buying a dedicated phone system. The tradeoff is that plan limits, texting costs, paid extras, and a comparatively focused feature set may matter if your team needs more advanced call handling or shared workflows.
What Grasshopper does
Grasshopper provides a business phone presence through mobile and desktop apps, using existing devices rather than requiring a separate phone system. The company says customers can choose local, toll-free, or vanity numbers, or port an existing number. It also advertises extensions and call routing, business texting, custom greetings, voicemail, call controls, contact management, and reporting. See Grasshopper’s small-business phone system overview and feature list.

That setup can suit a solo operator who wants business calls separated from personal calls, or a small team that needs a shared business identity across existing phones. The official description establishes the device model, not call quality on every network or device; real-world performance will depend on the connection and equipment in use.
Plans, included numbers, and listed fees
Grasshopper’s pricing page lists three tiers with different user, number, and extension allowances. The same page lists additional-number and extension charges and texting-related fees. These are page-listed details, not a guaranteed quote: the page also uses annual-billing and promotional language, so confirm the checkout total, billing interval, taxes, and terms before subscribing. | Plan or item | Listed allowance or fee |
|---|---|
| True Solo | One user, one phone number, and one extension. |
| Solo Plus | Unlimited users, one phone number, and three extensions. |
| Small Business | Unlimited users, four phone numbers, and unlimited extensions. |
| Additional phone number | $9 per month for each additional number. |
| Additional extension | $3 per month for each additional extension where charged. |
| Business texting | Registration is required; the pricing page lists a one-time $19.50 registration fee and a $1.50 monthly messaging fee. |
| Free trial | A seven-day trial is advertised; check the current terms and any billing conditions at signup. |
For a small team, “unlimited users” does not mean unlimited phone numbers: Solo Plus includes one number, while Small Business lists four. If separate numbers or extensions are important, calculate the likely recurring charges alongside the base plan. Grasshopper also lists optional services such as call blasting, professional voice recordings, international calling, and a virtual receptionist. Availability and price can differ by plan or page, so confirm the details that apply to your account.
The good: a separate business line without new phone hardware
- Uses devices you already have. An app-based service can provide a business number on existing mobile or desktop devices, avoiding the need to acquire a dedicated phone system.
- Core business-phone tools are advertised. Numbers, extensions, forwarding and routing, greetings, voicemail, call controls, and contact tools cover common needs for a small operation.
- Plan allowances are easy to compare. The listed tiers make user, number, and extension limits visible, though add-ons can change the total cost.
The bad: check feature fit and the full bill
Grasshopper’s official pages describe a focused set of calling and messaging tools, with some services sold as add-ons. TechRadar’s 2026 review characterizes the feature set as more limited than some alternatives; whether that is a problem depends on what your business actually needs. - UNSURPASSED RANGE: Experience the best in long-range coverage and clarity, provided by a unique antenna design and advances in noise-filtering technology
- ANSWERING SYSTEM: This reliable cordless system includes a digital answering machine that can record up to 22 minutes of incoming messages, outgoing announcements and memos, and a voice-guide for easier set up
- SMART CALL BLOCKER & CALLER ID ANNOUNCE: Say goodbye to unwanted calls. Robocalls on your landline are automatically blocked from ever ringing through - even the first time. You can also permanently blacklist any number you want with one touch on the dedicated key on the handset. The call block directory can store up to 1,000 name and number entries. Plus, the handset announces the name of the caller, so you can decide to answer the call or block it - screening calls has never been easier
- LARGE 2-INCH SCREEN, BIG TEXT, LIGHTED KEY PAD: High-contrast text on the extra-large 2 inch screen makes it easy to read incoming caller ID or call history records. Plus, the enlarged font and extra-large and lighted handset keypad allows for easy dialing in low-light conditions. This feature is helpful for those who are visually impaired
- HANDSET SPEAKERPHONE, AUDIO ASSIST, INTERCOM: This cordless system has built-in full-duplex speakerphone on handset allowing both ends to speak - and be heard - at the same time for conversations that are more true to life. Also designed with useful features like Audio Assist and handset intercom to help make your daily communications enjoyable
Before choosing a plan, check whether your daily workflow depends on shared inboxes, advanced call handling, integrations, or communications tools beyond the advertised basics. Do not assume a feature is included because it appears somewhere on a product page: verify its availability and price for the specific plan. Include number and extension charges, texting registration and monthly fees, and any optional service you intend to use when comparing costs.
The ugly: number porting and support deserve advance attention
Customer accounts are mixed, but they are individual reports rather than a measure of typical performance. Capterra’s review page, shown as updated September 30, 2026, includes one reviewer’s positive account of voice quality and phone support and another’s complaint about a number port taking months and dissatisfaction with support. Those examples do not establish how often either experience occurs. See the individual Grasshopper reviews on Capterra.

- Full Duplex Handset Speakerphone- Enjoy a speakerphone that can keep up with your calls; Increase participation by allowing both ends to speak—and be heard—at the same time for conversations that are more true to life
- Caller ID/Call Waiting- Know who’s calling with Caller ID/Call Waiting; Handset displays the name, number, time and date of incoming calls
- Backlit Keypad and Display- The entire keypad illuminates along with the LCD screen, allowing for easier viewing in dim light
- Confirm proper installation of the telephone base and charger power adapters; Any key answer
If keeping an existing business number is essential, ask Grasshopper about the porting process, timing, required information, and support route before making the service your primary line. Avoid relying on an assumed completion date; plan the transition around the provider’s current guidance and keep access to your existing service until the port is confirmed.

Grasshopper may fit
- Solo operators who want a dedicated business number without buying new phone hardware.
- Small teams whose needs center on business numbers, extensions, forwarding, voicemail, greetings, and basic messaging.
- Businesses that can work within the included number and extension limits or have priced the relevant add-ons.
Compare other services if
- Your team needs shared inboxes, advanced call handling, integrations, or a broader communications suite.
- You need multiple business numbers or extensions and add-on costs change the plan economics.
- Your operation depends on a reliable, well-understood porting process or needs dedicated desk-phone workflows.
TechRadar’s comparison coverage names Quo and Zoom Phone as alternatives to investigate, not as interchangeable products or guaranteed matches for every business. Compare each provider against the same requirements: users, numbers, extensions, messaging, call workflows, integrations, support, and the total recurring and one-time cost.

How to evaluate it before subscribing
- List the phone setup you need. Count users, separate business numbers, and extensions, and identify which existing mobile or desktop devices will use the service.
- Map requirements to a tier. Compare your counts with the allowances in True Solo, Solo Plus, and Small Business; price extra numbers or extensions where needed.
- Calculate the actual charge. Check the live checkout for billing interval, trial terms, taxes, texting registration and monthly fees, and any optional services.
- Verify workflow features. Confirm that the specific plan supports each important call-handling, messaging, reporting, or integration capability you rely on.
- Resolve porting questions before switching. If you are transferring a number, get current steps and timing from the provider and do not treat anecdotal reports as a guarantee of your own outcome.
