Grass and tree pollen allergies can cause the same symptoms, so sneezing, congestion, a runny nose, itchy eyes, or coughing cannot tell you which pollen is responsible. In many U.S. areas, tree pollen appears first—often in late winter or spring—while grass pollen tends to follow later in spring and summer. Local plants, climate, and weather can shift that sequence; symptom timing and local pollen information can suggest a trigger, but an allergist can help identify it.
How symptoms compare
Both tree and grass pollen can trigger allergic rhinitis. Common symptoms include sneezing, a stuffy or runny nose, itching in the nose or throat, and watery eyes. Cough or wheezing can also occur. The symptom pattern overlaps, so symptoms alone cannot reliably distinguish a tree pollen allergy from a grass pollen allergy.

Other seasonal allergens and irritants can contribute, too. A person may react to more than one pollen or have year-round allergic rhinitis that worsens during pollen seasons.

Across many U.S. locations, tree pollination generally begins before grass pollination. Tree pollen may appear in late winter or early spring, with grass pollen commonly following in spring and early summer or summer. These are broad tendencies, not fixed dates or a diagnostic rule.

The calendar varies with local plant species, latitude, climate, and weather. Tree pollen can begin as early as January in parts of the South. Bermuda grass may release pollen for much of the year in southern states, while tropical climates can have a long grass-pollen season. Mild winters may bring earlier pollination; rainy spring conditions can extend the period when people experience allergy symptoms.
How weather and local reports affect exposure
Warm, windy days can increase airborne pollen, and pollen levels may be higher in the morning in some circumstances. Rain can temporarily wash pollen from the air, though levels may rise again afterward. These patterns vary, so a generalized calendar or time of day should not substitute for local information.

A pollen count is a measurement; a pollen forecast is a prediction. Check local reports for both tree and grass pollen, and compare them with when symptoms begin or worsen. High counts do not cause symptoms in everyone: as allergist Cherie Zachary, MD, ACAAI president, put it in a March 4, 2026 statement, “It’s important to remember that high pollen counts don’t always translate to symptoms for every person.”
How to narrow down the trigger
- Track symptoms over time. Note when they start, whether they ease or worsen outdoors, and how they relate to local tree and grass pollen counts.
- Look for patterns, not proof. Symptoms that line up with a local pollen season can help narrow possibilities, but overlapping seasons and other allergens can make timing inconclusive.
- Ask an allergist about evaluation. An allergist can assess suspected triggers and discuss whether testing is appropriate. If symptoms persist year-round or fall outside expected pollen periods, seasonal pollen may not be the only contributor.
There is no directly comparable grass-versus-tree pollen prevalence figure in the cited sources. ACAAI gives a broad estimate that as many as 40 million people have hay fever, but that figure is not a comparison of the two pollen allergies.

Ways to reduce pollen exposure
- Monitor local pollen and mold information, and keep home and car windows closed during allergy season.
- After outdoor activity, shower, wash your hair, and change clothes to remove pollen.
- For mowing or other outdoor chores, ACAAI advises using a NIOSH-rated 95 filter mask. It also advises taking appropriate medication beforehand; discuss medication choices with a clinician.
- AAAAI lists masks, nasal filters, and air purifiers as possible mechanical barriers to aeroallergens and irritants, particularly when avoiding outdoor exposure is not practical. It does not specify a preferred purifier or product performance.
An allergist can discuss treatment options, which may include medication or immunotherapy for suitable patients. Exposure-reduction steps can help limit contact, but they do not establish which pollen you are allergic to.
