GraphQL’s Schema Language vs. REST’s Implicit Contract: What It Means to Type an API’s Shape

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GraphQL puts an application-specific type system at the center of its service contract: the schema declares the fields and operations clients may use, and requests are checked against it. REST does not prescribe a schema language, but a REST-style HTTP API can publish an explicit, machine-readable contract with OpenAPI. The useful distinction is not “typed versus untyped”; it is where an API describes its capabilities, how clients discover them, and how each approach determines and validates a response.

What “typing an API’s shape” means

An API contract describes what a client can send and what the service can return: available operations, inputs, outputs, and the meaning of the interaction. Typing that shape means expressing relevant parts of the contract in structured types so clients and tools can reason about them.

GraphQL has a built-in application-level schema and type system. REST, by contrast, is an architectural style rather than a schema syntax. A REST-style API may communicate its contract through endpoint conventions, HTTP semantics, representations, and documentation—or describe it separately in a format such as OpenAPI.

How GraphQL makes its contract explicit

The schema defines available capabilities

The GraphQL specification describes a service’s collective type-system capabilities as its schema. A schema specifies supported types and directives and identifies root operation types for queries, mutations, and, where supported, subscriptions. Its types describe fields, arguments, and input and output values. The GraphQL specification puts it plainly: “Every GraphQL service defines an application-specific type system.” (GraphQL, September 2025 Edition.)

A client sends an operation that selects fields, including nested fields, from the schema. The selection determines the requested result’s shape within the types the service exposes; it does not let the client invent arbitrary fields or bypass the schema.

Operations are checked against the schema

GraphQL uses the type system to determine whether an operation is valid. If an operation asks for an unknown field or supplies an incompatible argument, it fails validation rather than being a valid request to the service. GraphQL also specifies introspection, through which clients and tools can ask about schema information. These features make the declared contract usable for validation and discovery, although they do not guarantee that an implementation behaves correctly in every runtime situation.

SDL is one way to express a schema

The GraphQL Schema Definition Language (SDL) is the specification’s language for representing a type system. It can be used for client code generation or service bootstrapping, but it is not the only way to create a GraphQL schema. Implementations may construct types in code, define them in SDL, or infer them from resolver functions or data sources, as the GraphQL.org guide to schemas and types explains.

What REST’s “implicit contract” does—and does not—mean

REST is an architectural style, not a schema format

Roy T. Fielding defines REST through four interface constraints: “identification of resources; manipulation of resources through representations; self-descriptive messages; and, hypermedia as the engine of application state.” (Fielding’s dissertation chapter on REST.) Those constraints describe an architectural approach; they do not require an API to leave its contract undocumented or implicit.

“Implicit contract” is a useful description when a service’s behavior is conveyed through endpoint conventions, representations, HTTP semantics, and prose documentation rather than a separate formal interface description. It is a choice or condition of a particular API, not a defining property of REST.

HTTP semantics are meaningful but not a full application type system

HTTP standardizes request and response semantics, including methods, status codes, headers, and representations. RFC 9110 describes HTTP as a stateless application-level request/response protocol family with a generic interface and self-descriptive messages. Those protocol-level rules help clients interpret interactions, but they do not by themselves specify every application-specific field or response schema. (IETF RFC 9110: HTTP Semantics.)

OpenAPI can make an HTTP API’s contract explicit

OpenAPI is independent of REST: it is a format for describing HTTP APIs, not an architectural style. The OpenAPI 3.1.1 specification calls itself a “standard, programming language-agnostic interface description for HTTP APIs.” Its Paths Object describes endpoint paths and operations, and operations can document responses and schemas. A REST-style service can therefore have an explicit, machine-readable contract through OpenAPI. (OpenAPI Specification v3.1.1.)

GraphQL and REST-style APIs compared

Question GraphQL REST-style API
Where are capabilities described? In the service schema: types, fields, arguments, directives, and root operation types. In resource and interface conventions and representations; an OpenAPI description can document paths, operations, and schemas.
How does a client express a read? With an operation selecting fields and nested data from the schema. By requesting a resource representation through an endpoint and HTTP semantics; APIs may provide different endpoints or representations.
Who determines response shape? The client’s field selection shapes the requested result within the schema. Usually the endpoint’s representation contract determines it; OpenAPI can document response schemas.
How is a request validated or discovered? Operations are validated against the schema, and the specification includes introspection support. It depends on the service and its description. OpenAPI can support discovery and tooling when it is defined and maintained.
What is the architectural emphasis? A typed application-specific query and execution model. Resource identification, representations, self-descriptive messages, and hypermedia constraints.

This comparison describes the models, not a guarantee about any individual service. A schema or API description can be incomplete or out of date, and neither GraphQL nor REST labels ensure implementation quality.

How to choose the right comparison for a real API

When evaluating an API, check the contract it actually publishes and how it works, rather than inferring quality from its label.

  • Find the declaration: For GraphQL, inspect the schema and the operations it exposes. For an HTTP API, look for an OpenAPI document or other maintained interface description.
  • Check response control: Determine whether clients select fields within a schema or receive representations defined by particular endpoints.
  • Test validation and tooling: Confirm that the published contract is usable for request validation, client generation, or discovery, and that it matches service behavior.
  • Inspect the actual interaction: HTTP methods and status codes matter, but they are only part of the application contract. Likewise, a GraphQL schema describes available operations and data types, but a type declaration alone does not establish every runtime behavior.

GraphQL is a natural fit when an explicit, typed operation model and client-selected field sets are central to the API. A REST-style API can provide equally explicit documentation at the interface-description level when it publishes a maintained OpenAPI contract. These approaches describe different aspects of an API; one is not simply the typed version of the other.
