The results combine stretch, elastic recovery, accelerated alkaline hydrolysis and light-driven heating in a laboratory film—not a tested wearable or commercial device.
What the researchers made
Jiahui Dong, Yu-I Hsu and Hiroshi Uyama reported the work in Polymer Journal on 30 September 2026. Their film uses a polyester-based triblock copolymer, PLCL-PEG-PLCL diacrylate, crosslinked with PETMP through thiol-ene photocuring. One formulation, DA-1T/G, contains 2 wt% graphene nanoplatelets. The particles were reported as 6–8 nm thick and 5 µm wide. The original paper describes the synthesis and characterization.

The team varied the ratio of PETMP thiol groups to carbon-carbon double bonds, producing formulations designated DA-0T, DA-0.4T and DA-1T; the graphene-containing film is DA-1T/G. The mixtures included 1 wt% Irgacure 2959 photoinitiator, were exposed to 365 nm UV light for 30 minutes in glass molds, and were vacuum-dried at 40 °C. For DA-1T/G, the graphene was dispersed in chloroform with ultrasonication before curing.
How far can the graphene elastomer stretch?
DA-1T/G reached an elongation at break of 163.00 ± 8.11% in the paper’s tensile testing. That is the increase in length at failure relative to the original gauge length; it does not mean the film can be stretched indefinitely or that it will perform the same way in a finished device.

AZoM’s summary of the study gives the following comparison values for the tested formulations:

The results show that the formulation matters: changing the PETMP ratio altered the network’s mechanical behavior, while the graphene-containing version had the largest reported elongation at break among these samples. The reported figures are experimental results from this study, not a general performance rating for graphene elastomers. AZoM’s report also summarizes cyclic testing: DA-1T/G retained elastic behavior over 20 loading-and-unloading cycles at 70% strain, with about 3.70% elastic loss. That short test does not establish long-term fatigue life or wearable durability.

How quickly does it heat under near-infrared light?
With 700–1000 nm NIR irradiation, DA-1T/G’s measured surface temperature rose from 24.2 °C to 35.3 °C after 10 seconds and to 50.6 °C after 60 seconds. In the same reported comparison, graphene-free DA-1T showed no clear temperature increase in that wavelength range. The contrast supports graphene’s role in the film’s photothermal response; it does not establish how the material would heat under different light intensity, geometry or operating conditions.
What does “degradable” mean in this study?
The researchers assessed hydrolytic degradation in a pH 9.0 buffer at 37 °C, an accelerated alkaline test condition. They observed swelling before later mass loss and fragmentation. PETMP-assisted networks showed more integrated but comparatively abrupt bulk fragmentation as degradation progressed, while graphene delayed visible macroscopic breakdown and made the observed process more gradual.

This experiment does not provide a disposal timeline or demonstrate biodegradation in soil, compost, ordinary waste conditions or the human body. It also does not establish safe resorption or regulatory suitability. The reported degradation is specific to the alkaline buffer test.
Water uptake and surface wetting are different measures
The paper reports approximately 72% water uptake after 24 hours for DA-0T and DA-0.4T, and approximately 67% for DA-1T/G. It separately reports water contact angles of 89.15 ± 2.95° for DA-0T and 97.9 ± 2.42° for DA-1T. Uptake measures water absorbed by a sample; contact angle describes how a droplet interacts with its surface. Because graphene changed surface morphology and wettability, the two measurements should not be treated as interchangeable evidence of water resistance.

What the results do—and do not—show
The demonstrated result is a deformable film with an NIR heating response and measured breakdown under an accelerated hydrolysis condition. The study discusses possible uses such as wearable thermal interfaces, soft photothermal patches, flexible heating elements and light-triggered actuation. It did not test a completed wearable sensor, skin interface, therapeutic device or actuator, and it did not assess biological safety, treatment efficacy or robotic actuation.
To move from material results to those applications, future work would need to evaluate prototypes, performance while the film is stretched and heated at the same time, and degradation under conditions relevant to the intended use. The reported experiments do not establish those device-level outcomes.
