“GPU power monitoring device not detected” can describe two different problems: a USB-connected sensor or controller is missing from Windows or its vendor app, or a monitoring program cannot read GPU power telemetry. Start by identifying which layer is failing. If the device itself is missing, check its physical USB connection first; if Windows sees it but the app does not, investigate model-specific software support. A GPU power-connector warning is a separate safety issue, not a USB detection problem.
First identify what is not detected
Note the device make and model, how it connects, and which program is expected to display it. A sensor or controller might use an internal motherboard USB 2.0 header, an external USB port, or USB-C. Wiring, pinout, compatibility, and software instructions vary by model, so do not assume that another device’s connection advice applies.

Then check whether the operating system detects the USB hardware. If it is absent or appears with an error, focus on the connection path and device. If Windows sees the hardware but the vendor app does not, the USB connection may be working; use the device maker’s guidance for that model’s app and drivers. There is no universal app-repair sequence established for all monitoring devices.
Check the USB connection
Internal USB 2.0 header
Shut down the PC and disconnect power before opening the case or changing an internal connection. Check that the cable is on the correct compatible motherboard header and aligned correctly; do not force a connector. If the device has a detachable cable, check its connection at the device too.

For its own products, NZXT recommends connecting directly to a motherboard USB 2.0 header during troubleshooting, trying another header, and checking cable seating. NZXT also warns that common USB hubs can cause detection issues with NZXT products. This is vendor-specific advice, not proof that every brand’s device behaves the same way. NZXT notes that many of its products use a 9-pin internal USB 2.0 header, often along the motherboard’s bottom edge; check your motherboard and device documentation rather than relying on location alone.
External USB or USB-C
Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends, then try another suitable port. If it is USB-C, pay attention to Windows notifications about power delivery, compatibility, or connection mode. Windows documents notifications that can indicate, for example, that the PC cannot provide enough power. Treat a notification as a clue about the USB-C path, not as a diagnosis of the sensor itself.

Cross-test to narrow down the fault
When practical, change one part of the connection at a time and record what happens. MSI recommends checking the cable at both ends, trying another computer port, testing the device on another system, and power-cycling the monitor for problems with monitor USB ports. That advice applies directly to monitors; use the same cross-test logic cautiously with other hardware.

- If the device works on another suitable port or system, investigate the original host port, header, or configuration.
- If another known-working device also fails on the original connection, the host-side connection is a stronger suspect.
- If the device remains absent across suitable ports or systems, check the device maker’s model-specific instructions and contact its support.
MSI’s monitor USB troubleshooting guide does not establish that every sensor or controller supports the same ports, cables, or diagnostic steps. Do not substitute an unverified cable or buy a replacement device until you have confirmed the model and its connection requirements.

When the device is present but GPU power readings are missing
A program’s GPU telemetry is not the same thing as USB enumeration. NVIDIA documents nvidia-smi dmon as a way to report GPU telemetry, including power usage, on supported devices. For example, run nvidia-smi dmon in a command prompt or terminal where NVIDIA’s utility is available. Metric support depends on the GPU and metric; unsupported or failed metrics may appear as a dash. The command checks NVIDIA GPU telemetry, not whether an external USB controller is connected or recognized.
See NVIDIA’s nvidia-smi documentation for supported metrics and usage. If this reports GPU telemetry but a separate sensor app does not, troubleshoot that app and its device according to the manufacturer’s instructions rather than treating the result as a USB test.

Do not confuse a GPU power-connector warning with missing USB hardware
If the actual symptom is a red Power Detector+ warning in ASUS GPU Tweak III, it concerns the GPU’s 12VHPWR or 12V-2×6 power connector sense pins—not a USB sensor. ASUS documents a red warning when one or more of six sense pins reads 0 amps, or when one or more reads more than 9.2 amps. Those are ASUS’s documented conditions for this feature, not general USB or sensor thresholds.

Shut down and unplug the PC before inspecting the connector. ASUS advises checking that the cable is fully seated, examining the cable and GPU socket for damage, and verifying PSU suitability. Do not handle or reseat a powered GPU connector. Follow the card maker’s instructions; ASUS’s Power Detector+ guidance describes its warning procedure.

When to contact the device maker
Contact the manufacturer once you have checked the connection using instructions for the exact model and, where possible, tried another suitable header, port, or system. Include the device model, connection type, the operating system’s detection result, the software that should recognize it, and the cross-test results. Without the hardware model and those results, it is not possible to determine reliably whether the device, cable, host connection, or software needs replacement or repair.
