A neocloud can be attractive when you need concentrated GPU capacity, flexible instance choices, or lower-level control. A broader GPU cloud can win when managed databases, identity, networking, regional coverage, compliance controls, or an existing spending commitment are more valuable than a narrowly optimized GPU rate.

What “GPU cloud” and “neocloud” mean
GPU cloud is the broad category: hosted computing services that rent access to graphics processors by the hour, second, request, or another usage unit. The provider may also supply virtual machines, containers, Kubernetes, storage, networking, monitoring, identity, databases, and other general cloud services.
Neocloud is an industry term for a provider built primarily around GPU-intensive artificial-intelligence workloads instead of a broad general-purpose cloud portfolio. A provider-authored explanation from Runpod uses that definition. The boundary is not a formal standard: a specialized provider can add managed Kubernetes and data services, while a broad cloud can operate highly specialized AI infrastructure. Treat the labels as a comparison frame, not as a certification.

GPU cloud versus neocloud at a glance
| Decision axis | Broad GPU cloud | Neocloud |
|---|---|---|
| Primary design goal | GPU capacity integrated with a wide cloud platform | GPU-intensive AI workloads as the central product |
| Typical strengths | Managed databases, queues, identity, CDN, analytics, networking, regional and compliance options | Focused GPU inventory, AI-oriented deployment options, direct hardware control, and sometimes simpler access to scarce models |
| Potential compromises | Higher list price or more abstraction for a workload that only needs GPUs; capacity may be shared with many services | Fewer regions or integrated services; the customer may operate more of the serving, storage, networking, and observability stack |
| Best economic case | An existing commitment, negotiated discount, or substantial surrounding cloud workload lowers total cost | High GPU utilization, a suitable GPU SKU, and a billing model that avoids paying for idle capacity |
| Main diligence question | What is the all-in cost after egress, orchestration, support, and committed-spend rules? | Can the provider maintain the required capacity, latency, data residency, and operational support at your scale? |
Why GPU-hour price is not inference cost
For inference, the useful denominator is delivered output. NVIDIA states the principle directly: “The real key to reducing token cost, however, lies in the denominator: maximizing the delivered token output.” A $4 GPU-hour can be cheaper than a $2 GPU-hour if it produces more usable tokens at your latency target.
Use this basic calculation for a steady workload:
cost per million output tokens = (effective hourly cost ÷ delivered tokens per second ÷ 3,600) × 1,000,000

For serverless billing, replace the hourly numerator with the amount charged for the invocation or worker time. If you need prompt-token economics as well, calculate input and output tokens separately; a provider’s API price may not map directly to the underlying GPU bill.
Variables that change the denominator
- Model and precision: a larger model, longer context, or higher precision can reduce throughput and increase memory demand.
- Prompt and output lengths: short prompts and short completions can produce very different economics from long-context generation.
- Concurrency: batching may raise aggregate throughput but can increase queueing and time to first token.
- Serving software: kernels, quantization, parallelism, caching, and scheduler settings affect tokens per second.
- Latency target: a system optimized for maximum throughput may fail a p95 latency objective; reserving headroom raises cost per useful token.
- Utilization: a dedicated instance that is idle between requests still incurs its reservation or runtime charge.
- Reliability policy: replicas, failover regions, and spare capacity improve availability but add expense.
How providers charge
Do not compare one provider’s on-demand GPU-hour with another provider’s serverless invocation or special inference rate as though they were the same product. Identify the billing unit, the GPU count, the region, and what remains outside the quoted rate.

| Model | How it works | When it fits | Risks to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dedicated GPU instance (pod or VM) | You pay for a selected GPU or server while it is running, often by the second or hour. | Stable traffic, custom containers, predictable performance, or a need for full host control. | Idle time, boot time, storage, egress, and the need to manage autoscaling and failover. |
| Serverless inference | Workers scale around requests and are billed by execution time or another usage measure. | Bursty or uneven demand where eliminating idle GPUs matters. | Cold starts, concurrency limits, queueing, worker minimums, and differences between advertised and sustained throughput. |
| Cluster or multi-node service | Several GPUs or nodes are provisioned for distributed serving or large models. | Models that do not fit on one GPU, high-throughput serving, or strict redundancy requirements. | Interconnect performance, minimum commitments, scheduling delays, and paying for the entire cluster during low demand. |
| Preemptible or spot capacity | Discounted capacity that can be interrupted or repriced as supply and demand change. | Fault-tolerant batch inference, asynchronous jobs, or workloads that can retry. | Evictions, checkpointing overhead, uncertain capacity, and a price that is not guaranteed. |
| Reserved or committed use | A longer commitment exchanges flexibility for a lower negotiated or published rate. | Stable, forecastable utilization over the commitment period. | Unused commitments, cancellation terms, GPU-generation changes, and regional restrictions. |
Runpod’s pricing page separates Pods, usage-based Serverless, and Clusters, and notes that storage and deployment choices affect the total. The page was marked as updated October 8, 2026; verify the current Community Cloud or Secure Cloud selection, billing unit, and GPU SKU before using any figure in a business case.
Published price snapshots and how to read them
The following figures were visible on October 13, 2026. They are page snapshots, not quotes or availability guarantees. Region, GPU count, taxes, storage, networking, support, and contract terms can change the result.
| Provider and GPU | On-demand rate | Preemptible or spot rate | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nebius HGX H100 | $3.85 per GPU-hour | From $0.79 per GPU-hour | Rates shown on the Nebius pricing page; the page snapshot was accessed October 13, 2026. |
| Nebius HGX H200 | $4.50 per GPU-hour | From $0.79 per GPU-hour | Spot rates vary with capacity, cluster utilization, demand, and customer pricing preferences. |
| CoreWeave instances and inference products | Product-specific | On-demand, spot, and inference-platform categories are listed | The pricing page distinguishes products and eligibility; do not substitute a specialized inference rate for a general GPU-hour without checking the billing basis. |
Nebius says spot prices can change as often as every 15 minutes and that long-term usage commitments may reduce rates for stable workloads. Ask for the actual discount, minimum commitment, interruption policy, and whether the quoted price applies to your region and GPU count. A “from” price is a floor observed on the page, not a promise that the capacity you need will be available at that amount.
Performance: compare a matched serving experiment
No neutral benchmark in the supplied provider material compares every named service under one controlled workload. Run your own test or require a reproducible methodology from each finalist.
Hold these inputs constant
- Deploy the identical model checkpoint, tokenizer, quantization, and precision.
- Use the same prompt set, context length, maximum output length, stop conditions, and sampling settings.
- Test the same concurrency levels and request mix. Measure both a low-load case and the level expected in production.
- Use equivalent serving software and versions where possible. Record batching, tensor or pipeline parallelism, KV-cache settings, and autoscaling rules.
- Run in comparable regions and include startup, image-pull, and model-loading time when users experience those delays.
- Measure time to first token, inter-token latency, tokens per second, p50 and p95 request latency, error rate, queue time, and recovery after interruption.
- Record every charge: GPU runtime, serverless worker time, storage, egress, load balancing, orchestration, monitoring, support, and idle replicas.
Translate measurements into useful economics
Report at least three numbers: cost per million output tokens, cost per completed request at the target prompt and output lengths, and monthly cost at your real traffic profile. State whether “tokens per second” means aggregate output across a batch, per-request generation speed, or a provider’s theoretical peak. A high aggregate figure is not useful if p95 latency or error budgets are missed.

What published benchmark claims actually show
NVIDIA’s inference analysis reports a vendor-defined comparison using DeepSeek-R1, 8K input and 1K output results, NVIDIA Blackwell and Hopper systems, and NVIDIA software. In that setup, it lists:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| System | Reported GPU rate | Reported tokens per second per GPU | Reported cost per million tokens |
|---|---|---|---|
| HGX H200 | $1.41 per GPU-hour | 90 | $4.20 |
| GB300 NVL72 | $2.65 per GPU-hour | 6,000 | $0.12 |
NVIDIA describes the GB300 result as 35 times lower cost per million tokens in that comparison. The figures depend on the model, sequence lengths, hardware, software, and assumptions stated on the page; they are not a universal price for every cloud or deployment. The same page says a Blackwell B200 result for GPT-OSS-120B moved from $0.11 to $0.02 per million tokens within two months of launch, attributing the change to software improvements. Treat that as a time-specific vendor benchmark, not a guaranteed market rate.
Provider-hosted comparisons need the same caution. A CoreWeave-hosted summary of a Signal65 report dated September 2026 reports up to 52% lower three-year total cost of ownership on HGX B300, up to 65% per-token cost/performance advantage for DeepSeek-R1, and up to 26% lower serverless inference cost across 17 models versus selected hyperscaler baselines. It also reports 39% to 66% per-token savings for GB200 against the compared hyperscalers. Those are findings of the selected study and baselines, not independent guarantees for another provider, contract, model, or traffic pattern. The summary says its TCO includes compute, storage, networking, orchestration, observability, and support; review the full methodology before using the percentages in a procurement decision.
Capacity, geography, and interruption risk
A technically excellent GPU is irrelevant if you cannot obtain the required count when traffic rises. Request the exact GPU model, number of GPUs per replica, interconnect, region, scale-up time, and maximum sustainable fleet size in writing.
- Availability: distinguish capacity visible in a console from capacity reserved for your account. Ask how often allocation requests fail or wait.
- Geography: verify that inference and backups can remain in the required country or legal region. A specialized provider may have fewer locations than a broad cloud.
- Scale events: test a cold scale-up and a sudden traffic increase, not just a warm, preloaded replica.
- Spot behavior: determine notice time, eviction frequency, checkpoint requirements, and whether replacement GPUs are the same model.
- Network path: measure application-to-inference latency, not only GPU generation speed. Cross-region calls and egress can dominate a short response.
- Redundancy: price a second zone or provider if downtime is more expensive than the extra capacity.
Platform breadth and operational workload
A neocloud is not automatically bare metal, and a broad cloud is not automatically easier. Evaluate the complete operating surface.

Services you may need around the model
- Container registry, image scanning, secrets, identity and access control.
- Object and block storage for weights, caches, logs, and checkpoints.
- Managed Kubernetes or another scheduler, autoscaling, rolling deployment, and job queues.
- Metrics, traces, token-level latency dashboards, alerting, and cost allocation.
- Private networking, firewalling, load balancing, key management, audit logs, and backup.
- Databases, feature stores, queues, CDN or edge delivery, and analytics.
Nebius describes managed Kubernetes for deploying containerized AI workloads and says it participates in MLPerf and holds NVIDIA Exemplar Cloud validation across multiple GPU generations on its compute page. That example shows why you must inspect each service’s actual control plane rather than assume every specialized provider offers only a rented GPU.
Choose the platform that matches your team’s operating ability. A small team may save engineering time with managed identity, observability, and databases even when the GPU line item is higher. A team with strong Kubernetes and networking expertise may prefer direct control and assemble those pieces itself.

- Write the service-level target. Define requests per second, prompt and output distributions, p95 time to first token, p95 completion latency, error budget, uptime, and data-residency constraints.
- Characterize demand. Separate steady traffic, daily peaks, batch jobs, and unpredictable bursts. Record the percentage of hours in which each replica will actually serve requests.
- Choose candidate hardware. Match model memory, interconnect, precision, and parallelism. Include at least one alternative GPU generation so a shortage does not stop the evaluation.
- Build an all-in cost sheet. Add runtime or invocation fees, storage, snapshots, egress, load balancing, orchestration, monitoring, support, replicas, and engineering time. Apply committed-spend credits only if the workload is eligible.
- Run the same benchmark. Use production-like prompts, concurrency, software, and region. Warm and cold paths should be separate results.
- Stress failure modes. Stop a worker, exhaust capacity, trigger autoscaling, and simulate an interrupted spot node. Record recovery time and lost or retried requests.
- Validate commercial terms. Confirm rate validity, minimums, discount duration, cancellation rights, taxes, support response, quota increases, and whether a quoted inference product has eligibility rules.
- Score operational fit. Give explicit weights to cost per useful token, latency, capacity, geography, compliance, platform integration, and staff effort. Do not let a single GPU-hour figure decide the purchase.
- Start with a reversible deployment. Keep model artifacts portable, use infrastructure-as-code, export logs and metrics, and maintain a second tested target before moving all production traffic.
Which option fits common inference patterns?
Steady, high-utilization production API
A dedicated instance or committed cluster can be economical when utilization stays high and the model benefits from a fixed, tuned environment. Compare the resulting cost per million tokens with a serverless option after including spare replicas and failover. A lower hourly rate loses its advantage if the instance spends most of the day idle.
Bursting traffic or uncertain demand
Usage-based serverless capacity can avoid paying for idle GPUs, provided cold starts and queueing meet the user-facing latency target. Keep a warm baseline if a cold worker would violate the service-level objective, and price that baseline as part of the solution.

Best Value
Large models requiring several GPUs
Prioritize interconnect, placement guarantees, and multi-node scheduling over a single-card price. A cluster with slower communication can deliver fewer useful tokens than a more expensive, tightly coupled system.
Inference embedded in a larger application
A broad cloud is often simpler when the model depends on managed databases, queues, identity, analytics, private networking, or a CDN in the same environment. Moving only the GPU may introduce cross-cloud egress, authentication, and monitoring work that erases the apparent savings.
Strict residency or compliance requirements
List the exact country, zone, encryption, audit, retention, and support-location requirements before testing price. If a provider cannot serve the required region or controls, its GPU rate is not a viable option.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Comparing unlike rates: fix this by labeling every figure as on-demand, spot, reserved, serverless, or specialized inference and stating the billing unit.
- Using peak tokens per second: publish p95 latency, sustained throughput, and error rate at production concurrency.
- Ignoring idle and ancillary cost: include minimum workers, storage, egress, orchestration, monitoring, support, and engineering labor.
- Assuming “neocloud” means fewer services: inspect the actual Kubernetes, storage, identity, observability, and networking offerings.
- Treating a vendor benchmark as a market average: reproduce the model, sequence lengths, software, and hardware or label the result as vendor-reported.
- Overcommitting for a discount: forecast utilization by month and model commitment failure, migration, and hardware refresh scenarios.
- Relying on spot for an interactive API: use interruption-tolerant batch jobs for spot, or maintain on-demand capacity and tested failover.
- Skipping portability: package the model and serving configuration in reproducible containers, keep telemetry exportable, and test a second destination before a crisis.
Bottom line
For AI inference, compare cost per useful token at the required latency and availability, then add the platform and operating costs around the GPU. A neocloud is compelling when focused GPU capacity, hardware choice, and flexible utilization outweigh the need for a broad integrated platform. A broader GPU cloud is compelling when managed services, regional coverage, compliance, existing commitments, or simpler operations dominate. Use published prices and benchmark claims as dated inputs, validate capacity and terms with the provider, and make the final choice from a matched workload test rather than a headline GPU-hour.
