The provider can reclaim spare GPU capacity when it needs it, so the customer accepts interruption, uncertain launch timing and possible retries in exchange for a lower price. On-Demand shifts more short-term commitment risk away from the customer, while Reserved Instances or other reservations trade flexibility for a one- or three-year commitment and more predictable access.
For most production workloads, the practical answer is not one pricing tier. Commit a predictable baseline with a reservation or On-Demand capacity, then run checkpointed, retryable jobs on Spot. That arrangement matches each risk to the workload instead of treating a discount as a capacity guarantee.

What “provider risk” means in GPU cloud pricing
A GPU provider carries risk when expensive accelerators sit idle, when demand changes suddenly, or when customers reserve capacity they later do not use. A pricing model limits that risk when it lets the provider reuse capacity quickly and avoid promising a fixed amount of hardware indefinitely.

It includes an interrupted training run, a failed launch because no GPU is available, an invoice for unused commitments, or a service outage when replacement capacity cannot be found. The three models divide those risks differently:

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
- Spot: the provider keeps the right to reclaim excess capacity; the customer absorbs interruption and availability risk.
- On-Demand: the customer avoids a long purchase commitment, but still has no absolute guarantee that a requested GPU can launch.
- Reserved capacity: the customer commits for a defined term and configuration, reducing planning uncertainty while increasing the risk of paying for capacity that no longer matches demand.
Therefore, Spot is the clearest answer to “which option limits provider risk?” It is not automatically the safest option for the customer.
How Spot GPU instances transfer risk
Spare capacity that can be reclaimed
AWS describes Spot Instances as spare EC2 capacity that can be interrupted when Amazon needs the capacity back. Google Cloud describes Spot VMs as excess capacity that may be preempted at any time. The mechanism is the important part: the provider can fill otherwise idle GPUs without making a permanent availability promise.
AWS says the only difference between On-Demand and Spot Instances is that Spot Instances can be interrupted by Amazon EC2. Its documentation also says Spot does not guarantee immediate availability or the aggregate capacity requested, and that availability changes with supply and demand. The provider can therefore reduce idle inventory risk, while the customer must design for a changing fleet.
Discounts are maximums, not a GPU quote
AWS advertises savings of up to 90% compared with On-Demand. Google Cloud documents discounts of up to 91% for many machine types and GPUs. Those are provider maximums, not a guaranteed price for a particular GPU model, region, operating system or date.
Google states that Spot prices follow supply and demand and can change as often as daily. GPU charges are added to the underlying machine-type charge. Storage, networking, operating-system licensing, taxes and data-transfer costs can materially change the bill even when the accelerator’s Spot rate looks attractive.
Interruption handling
AWS documents a two-minute interruption notice for Spot Instances. That window is useful for saving state, draining work and attempting a clean shutdown, but it is not enough to finish a large training step or to locate replacement capacity reliably.

Google excludes Spot VMs from the Compute Engine SLA. This is a contractual signal that a Spot discount should not be treated as an availability commitment. A job that cannot tolerate preemption needs another layer of capacity.
On-Demand: flexible commitment, imperfect availability
On-Demand instances let you start and stop resources without buying a one- or three-year commitment. AWS bills On-Demand by the second, so the financial exposure is tied to actual runtime rather than a reservation term. This is useful when demand is uncertain, workloads are interactive, or a team is still validating a GPU architecture.
Flexibility does not equal guaranteed capacity. AWS notes that a launch request can still fail when capacity is unavailable. A sudden regional shortage, an uncommon GPU type or a large simultaneous request can leave an On-Demand workload waiting just as a Spot workload would, although On-Demand avoids Spot’s reclaimability rule once the instance is running.
Use On-Demand for a production baseline when an interruption would be expensive and utilization is not yet predictable. It is also a sensible choice for notebooks, debugging sessions, latency-sensitive services and deployment windows where a long reservation would be premature.
Reserved Instances and other capacity reservations
One- or three-year commitment
AWS defines Reserved Instances as a one- or three-year commitment to a consistent instance configuration and Region. The economic benefit comes from committing ahead of time, so the model works best when GPU demand is stable, utilization is high and the configuration will remain suitable for the term.
The commitment creates a different failure mode from Spot. Instead of losing a running job, you can be left paying for capacity that is idle, oversized or tied to a GPU family your software no longer needs. A change in region, host shape, project funding or model architecture can turn a lower effective rate into an underutilized contract.

Capacity reservations and scheduled GPU blocks
A reservation or scheduled capacity product can improve the odds of obtaining a specific GPU at a known time. AWS also lists Capacity Blocks for reserving a cluster of GPU instances. Before purchasing, verify the exact GPU model, Region, start and end time, cluster size and current price; those details determine whether the reservation solves the actual capacity problem.
Reservation products improve predictability, but they should not be confused with unlimited flexibility. The more specific the reservation, the greater the risk that a changed workload cannot use it efficiently.
Comparison of the three models
| Option | Who bears the main risk? | Interruption exposure | Commitment | Best-fit workloads |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Spot | Customer bears interruption and replacement risk; provider can reclaim excess capacity. | High; AWS documents a two-minute notice, and Google allows preemption at any time. | No long-term purchase commitment. | Batch processing, checkpointed training, rendering, CI and retryable jobs. |
| On-Demand | Customer pays the runtime rate; provider still retains launch-capacity risk. | Lower after launch than Spot, but launch can fail because capacity is unavailable. | None beyond the runtime used. | Interactive work, variable demand and services where interruption cost is high. |
| Reserved or other reservation | Customer bears underutilization and configuration-mismatch risk. | Lower planning uncertainty when the reservation matches the need; exact guarantees depend on the product. | AWS Reserved Instances use one- or three-year terms; Capacity Blocks use a defined schedule. | Stable, high-utilization demand and scheduled GPU clusters. |
Choose by workload characteristics, not headline discount
Choose Spot when restartability is built in
Spot is appropriate when a job can save progress, retry failed work and wait for replacement GPUs. Examples include distributed batch inference, video rendering, hyperparameter sweeps, continuous-integration workers and training jobs that checkpoint frequently.
- Write checkpoints to durable storage outside the instance.
- Make jobs idempotent so a retry does not duplicate irreversible work.
- Use a queue that can reassign work when a worker disappears.
- Request several compatible GPU families and Availability Zones where the provider supports that flexibility.
- Track interruption events, queue age and checkpoint recovery time.
Diversifying requests can improve the chance of finding capacity, but it cannot create a guarantee. AWS explicitly says aggregate Spot availability is not guaranteed, so a Spot-only failover plan can fail during a broad shortage.
Choose On-Demand when uncertainty is more expensive than the premium
On-Demand is the middle path for teams that need flexibility but cannot accept routine reclamation. It fits an API serving a live request, a development environment used unpredictably, a migration project with an unknown end date, or a baseline that must remain available while elastic jobs come and go.
Keep a fallback plan even here. A failed launch can result from regional capacity pressure, so test another compatible instance type or Region before an incident occurs.

Choose a reservation when demand is stable and expensive to miss
A reservation is justified when usage is consistently high, the GPU configuration is known, and the cost of failing to obtain capacity exceeds the cost of a term commitment. Scheduled model-training windows, contracted inference volume and a continuously utilized internal cluster are typical examples.

A risk-balanced production design
A common architecture uses a committed baseline plus Spot for elastic work:
- Size the baseline: place the minimum continuously required service capacity on On-Demand or a reservation.
- Separate interruptible queues: route batch, retryable and exploratory jobs to Spot workers rather than sharing the same pool as strict-availability services.
- Checkpoint at useful boundaries: save model weights, optimizer state, input offsets and metadata often enough that the interruption notice does not erase substantial work.
- Automate replacement: when a worker is reclaimed, requeue its task and request compatible capacity in multiple pools where possible.
- Protect state: keep durable data, orchestration state and credentials outside the ephemeral GPU instance.
- Set a spend and latency ceiling: stop retrying or switch to On-Demand when queue age, deadline or recovery cost exceeds the Spot savings.
This design limits provider idle-capacity risk through Spot usage without making a customer-facing service dependent on a market of reclaimable GPUs.

There is no portable “GPU price.” The total depends on GPU model, host machine, Region, operating system, storage, networking, taxes and commitment terms. Compare the complete instance configuration, not only the accelerator line item.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Record the exact GPU model and count, host machine type, Region and operating system.
- Check the provider’s live Spot and GPU pricing pages on the day of purchase.
- For AWS, use the EC2 Spot documentation together with the current EC2 pricing and Spot pricing tools.
- For Google Cloud, confirm the current Spot rate, machine-type charge and GPU charge separately.
- Add storage, data transfer, orchestration and idle time to the estimate.
- Stress-test the estimate with interruption retries and a fallback to On-Demand.
Provider maximum discounts are marketing ceilings. Your effective cost is the price paid for completed useful work, including lost progress, queue delays and replacement capacity.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Spot is cheap, so I can use it for everything.”
Correction: classify each workload by restartability and service-level impact. Keep stateful, strict-availability components on a more predictable tier.
“On-Demand guarantees that my GPU will launch.”
Correction: maintain tested alternate instance types or Regions. On-Demand removes a term commitment, not every capacity constraint.
“A reservation is always cheaper.”
Correction: calculate utilization over the full one- or three-year term and include configuration drift. An unused reservation can cost more than flexible runtime pricing.

Quick Recap
Bottom-line decision rule
- Spot best limits provider idle-capacity risk and is the lowest-commitment option, but transfers interruption and availability risk to you.
- On-Demand is the safest flexible default when usage is uncertain or interruption is costly, while still requiring a launch-capacity contingency.
- Reserved capacity is worth considering when demand is stable, utilization is high and missing GPUs costs more than a one- or three-year commitment.
- A blended baseline-plus-Spot design usually gives production systems the best risk balance.
