GPU Cloud Providers Compared: What to Check Before Choosing One

There is no single best GPU cloud provider. The right choice depends on your exact GPU model and memory, number of GPUs, workload topology, region, launch availability, storage and transfer needs, and the support or control your team requires. Compare equivalent configurations and calculate the complete job cost before moving data or promising a deadline.

Start with the workload, not the provider name

A GPU rental is useful only when its hardware and operating model match the job. A low hourly figure can be a poor value if the instance has insufficient VRAM, lacks the interconnect your training code needs, is unavailable in your target zone, or leaves storage and transfer charges out of the quote.

Model training and distributed fine-tuning

Large training runs usually need several identical GPUs, fast GPU-to-GPU communication, high CPU and system-memory capacity, and a reliable way to restart work after an interruption. For these jobs, compare complete multi-GPU instances or clusters rather than multiplying a single-GPU rate. Check whether the GPUs share a high-bandwidth intra-node fabric and what networking is available between nodes.

Single-GPU fine-tuning and batch jobs

Fine-tuning, embedding generation, rendering, and other batch workloads can fit a one- to four-GPU virtual machine. The key questions are VRAM, local scratch space, startup time, image support, and whether the provider lets you stop billing when the job is idle. A cheaper GPU that cannot hold the model may cost more after repeated retries or model sharding.

Interactive development

For notebooks and experiments, predictable access, persistent storage, an API or console that is easy to use, and the ability to scale from one GPU to several may matter more than peak interconnect bandwidth. First-come capacity can be acceptable for exploratory work but is risky for a scheduled demonstration or a deadline.

Online inference

Inference has a different cost pattern. A continuously provisioned virtual machine gives control and stable latency, while a serverless endpoint can charge according to requests or execution time and may scale down when idle. Compare cold-start behavior, minimum billing units, concurrency limits, model-loading time, and regional availability.

Normalize the GPU configuration before comparing prices

Use the same specification on every quote. At minimum, record the following fields:

Comparison field Why it changes the decision
Exact GPU model and variant H100 PCIe, H100 SXM, H200, A100, and newer families have different memory, bandwidth, power, and availability characteristics.
VRAM per GPU and total VRAM A model may fit on one GPU, require sharding across several, or fail because the quoted total is split among separate devices.
GPU count Eight GPUs are not equivalent to eight separately rented machines; communication overhead and scheduling differ.
CPU, system RAM, and local storage Data preparation and checkpointing can bottleneck an otherwise fast GPU.
Interconnect and network NVSwitch, PCIe topology, cross-node bandwidth, and latency determine distributed-training efficiency.
Billing unit and minimum duration Per-GPU-hour, per-instance-hour, per-second, and serverless execution billing produce different totals for short or idle jobs.
Region and capacity type On-demand, reserved, spot, community-hosted, and secure capacity have different interruption and launch risks.
Storage and data transfer Persistent volumes, snapshots, ingress, egress, and cross-region movement can dominate a long-running job’s bill.

What the major provider types offer

Provider Documented strengths or scope Questions to verify
Amazon Web Services EC2 P5 instances offer up to eight H100 GPUs; P5e and P5en configurations offer up to eight H200 GPUs. The documented options include NVSwitch, Elastic Fabric Adapter networking, local NVMe, and integrations such as FSx for Lustre. An eight-GPU P5 instance is specified at up to 640 GB total GPU memory. Confirm the exact P5 family, region, quota, launch capacity, and all attached storage and data-service charges. The published interconnect and network figures are vendor specifications, not independent benchmarks.
Google Cloud Compute Engine documentation covers H100, H200, B200, GB200, GB300, and A100 GPU families and points to a separate region-and-zone availability view. Check that the desired SKU is offered in the target zone, that quota is approved, and that the machine type includes enough CPU, RAM, and boot or scratch storage.
Microsoft Azure Azure’s GPU virtual-machine documentation covers NC families for AI/ML, high-performance computing, and graphics, along with ND-H100 and A100 families. Use the detailed family page for the current GPU count, memory, networking, disks, region, and price. “NC” or “ND” alone is not a complete configuration.
Runpod The October 8, 2026 pricing page separates Pods, Serverless, and Clusters, shows GPU and storage prices, and describes Pods across more than 30 regions. Determine whether the listing is Community Cloud or Secure Cloud, verify the GPU variant, inspect current capacity, and add storage charges.
Lambda Its instance catalog lists GPU type, memory, included CPU, RAM, storage, and price per GPU-hour. It describes one- to eight-GPU instances and self-serve access on a first-come basis. Compare the complete instance size, not only the per-GPU number, and confirm that the required size is currently available in your region.
CoreWeave Its pricing material lists storage charges and states that the described services have no ingress, egress, or transfer fees. Confirm that those terms apply to your specific service, region, storage product, and account contract; storage still carries a charge.
Vast.ai The live pricing page is a dynamic marketplace listing. The available page material does not establish a current comparable rate or host-reliability ranking. Inspect the live offer, host terms, GPU identity, location, and interruption policy directly.

For multi-GPU training, topology can matter more than the GPU count

Distributed training repeatedly exchanges gradients and activations. Two eight-GPU options can have very different throughput if one has a shared high-bandwidth GPU fabric and the other routes communication through slower links.

For its relevant H100 and H200 configurations, Amazon Web Services documents up to 900 GB/s of NVSwitch interconnect within an eight-GPU instance and up to 3,200 Gbps of Elastic Fabric Adapter networking. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent speed tests. Ask every provider for the intra-node topology, cross-node bandwidth, latency expectations, placement rules, and supported collective-communication stack before estimating scaling efficiency.

  • Confirm whether all GPUs are in one node or distributed across several.
  • Check the number and type of network interfaces and whether the cluster uses a placement strategy that keeps nodes close.
  • Ask which driver, CUDA, NCCL, and container versions are supported.
  • Budget for checkpoint storage and a restart plan; fast networking does not prevent interruptions.

Capacity is regional, quota-limited, and time-sensitive

A GPU shown in a catalog is not a promise that it can launch when you need it. Capacity can differ by region, zone, GPU variant, instance size, account, and purchasing mode. Google Cloud publishes a separate region-and-zone GPU availability view, while Lambda describes self-serve access as first-come. Runpod listings can change as individual offers fill or disappear.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose the exact GPU, memory, GPU count, and region.
  2. Check the provider’s live capacity or launch screen rather than relying on a catalog entry.
  3. Apply for quota early, especially for multi-GPU instances.
  4. Run a small launch test using the same image, drivers, storage mount, and network path as the production job.
  5. Keep a second region or provider that can run the workload without redesigning the software.

Do not transfer a large dataset or announce a delivery date until the required instance has launched successfully and the provider has confirmed the relevant quota or reservation.

Calculate the total workload cost

The useful figure is the cost to finish the job, not the advertised GPU-hour. A practical estimate is:

Total cost = compute time + persistent and scratch storage + data transfer + snapshots and backups + taxes + software or support charges + expected restart and idle time.

Runpod H100 PCIe Pod $2.89 per hour Shown on the pricing page updated October 8, 2026. Check whether the selected column is Community Cloud or Secure Cloud, plus current availability and storage billing.
Lambda H100 SXM configuration $3.99 per GPU-hour A listed configuration in the official catalog; the amount can vary with instance size and availability.
Lambda H100 PCIe configuration $3.29 per GPU-hour A listed configuration, not necessarily equivalent to the H100 SXM entry or to another provider’s H100.
Amazon Web Services P5 Price not stated here The cited material establishes up to eight H100 GPUs and up to 640 GB total GPU memory, not a comparable current hourly quote.

Runpod lists storage separately. Lambda notes that sales tax, VAT, or GST may apply. CoreWeave states no ingress, egress, or transfer fees for the described services, but its storage charges remain and the terms must be checked against the service you select. Commitment discounts, reservations, spot interruptions, minimum runtimes, and shutdown behavior can change the effective total.

Choose the operating model that fits

Dedicated virtual machines

A dedicated VM gives you control over drivers, containers, networking, disks, and scheduling. It is usually the clearest fit for persistent services, regulated workflows, and teams already operating in a major cloud. You also take responsibility for patching, utilization, and idle resources.

Serverless inference

Serverless products can remove VM management and bill by execution, which is attractive for bursty APIs. Examine cold starts, model cache behavior, maximum request duration, concurrency, and whether a GPU remains allocated between requests.

Clusters

Cluster offerings target multi-node training and other jobs that need coordinated scheduling and high-speed networking. Compare node shape, fabric, job scheduler, queue time, checkpoint handling, and failure recovery rather than only the price of one GPU.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Marketplaces

A marketplace can expose unusual GPUs or lower spot-like rates, but offers may come from different hosts with varying hardware condition, location, uptime, and support paths. Validate the physical GPU, benchmark your own workload, encrypt sensitive data, and maintain a recovery path before committing a critical run.

A decision process you can use before signing up

  1. Write a workload sheet. Record model size, framework and CUDA requirements, peak VRAM, expected GPU count, training duration, checkpoint frequency, inference latency target, and data location.
  2. Define an equivalent hardware target. Specify the exact GPU variant, VRAM, CPU, system RAM, local disk, and single-node or multi-node requirement.
  3. Shortlist by geography. Eliminate regions that cannot legally or practically host the data, then verify live capacity and quota in the remaining zones.
  4. Request an all-in quote. Include compute, persistent volumes, snapshots, transfer, taxes, support, commitments, and minimum billing periods.
  5. Run a representative pilot. Measure time to first usable result, throughput, memory headroom, checkpoint time, network behavior, and recovery after stopping and restarting the instance.
  6. Model failure and interruption. Estimate the cost of losing one hour, one checkpoint, or an entire spot allocation. Confirm how support is reached and what service guarantees actually cover.
  7. Choose with explicit assumptions. Document the GPU SKU, region, price date, expected utilization, storage size, transfer volume, and fallback provider so the decision can be revisited when prices or capacity change.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

  • Comparing an H100 PCIe with an H100 SXM as if they were identical: preserve the variant in every quote.
  • Multiplying a single-GPU price by eight: an eight-GPU instance may include different networking, storage, and billing terms.
  • Ignoring idle resources: stop or delete unattached volumes and unused endpoints, and check whether billing continues while a VM is stopped.
  • Assuming catalog availability: perform a real launch test and obtain quota before uploading data.
  • Treating vendor specifications as benchmark results: verify performance with your own model and batch sizes.
  • Forgetting data movement: place storage near compute when possible and include egress and cross-region transfers in the estimate.
  • Using marketplace capacity for irreplaceable data without controls: encrypt data, limit credentials, and keep checkpoints in a separately protected location.
  • Choosing a commitment before measuring utilization: run enough workload to know how many GPU-hours you will actually consume.

Answers to the questions buyers ask most

Which provider has the best GPU pricing?

There is no defensible universal answer from the listed figures. The Runpod H100 PCIe snapshot at $2.89 per hour is not directly comparable with Lambda’s $3.99 H100 SXM or $3.29 H100 PCIe listings because configuration, billing conditions, region, storage, taxes, and availability may differ. Normalize those variables and compare the cost to complete your actual workload.

How much does it cost to rent an H100?

The cited snapshots show $2.89 per hour for a Runpod H100 PCIe Pod, $3.29 per GPU-hour for one Lambda H100 PCIe configuration, and $3.99 per GPU-hour for one Lambda H100 SXM configuration. These are dated listing examples, not guaranteed quotes. An eight-GPU instance, secure capacity, storage, transfer, tax, and commitment can materially change the total.

Which provider is best for AI training?

For large distributed jobs, favor the provider and instance that deliver the required GPU memory, topology, network fabric, quota, checkpoint storage, and launch certainty. The documented AWS P5 specifications are relevant to interconnected H100 training, while Google Cloud, Azure, Lambda, Runpod, and cluster-oriented services may fit different regions, software stacks, or operating preferences. No neutral same-workload benchmark here establishes one overall winner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should you use a hyperscaler, a GPU cloud, or a marketplace?

Use a hyperscaler when integrated identity, networking, data services, governance, and enterprise support are central. Use a specialized GPU cloud when you want simpler self-service or a focused set of GPU configurations. Use a marketplace when price or access to a particular host is worth accepting more variation and operational risk. The best choice can change between experimentation, production inference, and a time-critical training run.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
