It is a name for a category of AI models that use transformer-based methods and pretraining to generate outputs such as text. ChatGPT is a service people use; it is not what the acronym GPT stands for.
What does each part of GPT mean?
- Generative: The model produces an output in response to input. OpenAI lists text generation, summarization, conversation, creative writing and code generation among uses of its text-generation models (OpenAI API: Key concepts).
- Pre-trained: The model is trained before it is used to respond to a particular prompt or task. The GPT-4 technical report describes pretraining that predicts the next token in a document (OpenAI, GPT-4 Technical Report, 2023).
- Transformer: This refers to the model architecture family associated with GPT. Google Cloud also identifies transformer as the architecture behind GPT (Google Cloud, “What is GPT and how does it work?”).
How does a GPT model generate text?
In broad terms, the model uses the context it has received to predict and produce a likely continuation, piece by piece. For GPT-4 specifically, OpenAI describes a Transformer-style model pretrained to predict the next token in a document. “Token” means a unit of text processed by the model; it may be a whole word or part of one. The GPT-4 report says it used publicly available data and data licensed from third-party providers, but does not disclose several implementation details. Those details should not be assumed to apply to every GPT model (GPT-4 Technical Report).

GPT and ChatGPT are not the same thing
GPT refers to the model category or name; ChatGPT is a user-facing service powered by models. The terms are related, but ChatGPT is not an expansion of “GPT.” OpenAI describes ChatGPT as an internet-accessible service powered by its foundation models (OpenAI, “How ChatGPT and our foundation models are developed,” updated April 30, 2025).

What the acronym does—and does not—tell you
The name gives a useful high-level description: generation, pretraining and a transformer connection. It does not establish a specific model’s training data, exact architecture, capabilities or training process. Those can differ between models, and technical details may not be fully disclosed. For example, OpenAI’s GPT-4 report explicitly withholds some implementation details, so the GPT label alone is not a specification.
