Vintage lenses are a practical match for the GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS: GoPro designed the camera for manual-focus, manual-aperture lenses and says legacy glass can be mounted with an adapter. That makes the ILS less like a conventional autofocus mirrorless camera and more like a compact 8K video body for deliberate, hands-on shooting. The tradeoffs are a tight field of view on its 1-inch sensor, no autofocus, mount-specific adapters and extra support for heavier lens combinations.
Why vintage lenses suit this unusual camera
The MISSION 1 PRO ILS has a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) mount, but it lacks electronic lens contacts. GoPro says lenses need manual focus and manual or fixed aperture; autofocus is not supported. That removes much of the convenience expected from a typical modern mirrorless camera, but it also means an older, fully manual lens is not being asked to provide electronic features the body cannot use.

GoPro says the camera can take vintage lenses through an adapter, along with PL-mount cinema lenses and other specialty glass. The appeal is a compact setup for video creators who want manual control and a particular lens rendering, rather than autofocus convenience. GoPro lists manufacturer specifications of a 50MP 1-inch sensor, up to 8K60 or 4K240 video, and 8K30 Open Gate; these are published specifications, not independent performance measurements. GoPro’s MISSION 1 PRO ILS announcement describes its intended lens options.

Which lenses work—and which may not
| Lens option | What to check | Practical tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Manual MFT lens | It needs a physical manual-focus mechanism and a manual aperture ring, or a fixed aperture. Check the exact lens; an MFT mount alone does not guarantee usable controls. | No legacy-mount adapter is needed, but lens-specific HyperSmooth support and menu setup still matter. |
| Vintage lens | Identify the lens’s original mount, then choose an adapter specifically connecting that mount to MFT. | Adapter fit and added weight vary by lens and adapter; count both when planning the rig. |
| Electronic autofocus MFT lens | Do not assume it will work as intended just because it fits the MFT mount. The body has no electronic contacts and does not support autofocus. | Electronic focus-by-wire or aperture controls may be unavailable; confirm that the lens can be operated manually without body communication. |
For an adapted lens, the adapter must match its native mount. An M42-to-MFT adapter, for example, is not a universal fit for Nikon F or other vintage mounts. GoPro’s product page describes supported lens types and publishes a curated lens selection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What crop factor should you expect?
The lens’s focal length does not change, but the smaller active sensor area gives a tighter field of view than the same lens on a full-frame camera. GoPro states an approximate 2.7× crop without stabilization and 3× with stabilization. In its example, a 17mm lens at 3× frames roughly like a 50mm lens on full frame. Treat these as approximate field-of-view equivalents, not changes to the lens itself.
That crop can work well for tighter video framing, but it makes wide shots harder to achieve with ordinary focal lengths. If a vintage lens is being chosen for a particular look or scene, account for the ILS’s crop before deciding that its focal length will give the desired composition.

HyperSmooth needs lens-specific attention
GoPro documents HyperSmooth support for prime rectilinear lenses from 6–500mm and names five supported MFT fisheye lenses: Laowa 4mm f/2.8, 7Artisans 6mm f/2, Meike 7.5mm f/2.8, 7Artisans 7.5mm f/2.8 II and Brightin Star 7.5mm f/2.8. The documented list is not a promise that every adapted vintage lens will receive the same stabilization behavior. Check GoPro’s current lens list and firmware information before building around a specific lens.
Digital Camera World’s Hillary K. Grigonis, US Editor, reports that operators must select the appropriate lens in the camera menu for stabilization. Her published article describes that setup; it is not a claim of testing by this article. For a lens that is not on GoPro’s supported list, verify the camera’s available settings and test the intended combination before relying on stabilization for a shot.

Plan for adapter fit, weight and handling
A mount adapter adds another part to the setup, and heavier glass can change how the small body should be supported. Grigonis reports that lenses over 250g need an external support system on the ILS, and notes that adapter weight should count toward the rig. That is her practical observation, not a universal weight limit published by GoPro. For a heavy lens or adapter combination, plan a support point rather than letting the camera mount carry the entire load.
Is it better for video or stills?
The strongest case is video: a compact body with high-resolution recording, manual lens control and the option to use older glass for a distinct rendering. Whether a particular vintage lens gives the desired character is lens-dependent; the camera’s specifications alone do not guarantee a film-like result.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Grigonis’s assessment is more cautious for still photography. She favors retro-style cameras such as the OM System Pen or Fujifilm X-T30 III for that use. That is her editorial judgment, not a universal verdict. For photographers who want dependable autofocus and electronic lens integration, the ILS’s manual-only lens operation is a significant mismatch; for video makers who want to work manually, it can be a coherent design choice.

A practical compatibility checklist
- Check lens controls: confirm the lens has manual focus and a manual aperture ring, or a fixed aperture; do not infer compatibility from the MFT mount alone.
- For vintage glass, identify the original mount: buy an adapter explicitly matching that mount to MFT.
- Calculate framing: use approximately 2.7× for the no-stabilization crop or 3× with stabilization when estimating full-frame-equivalent field of view.
- Check stabilization support: consult GoPro’s current supported-lens information and select the correct lens in-camera where required.
- Assess the complete rig: consider lens and adapter weight together, and add external support if the combination needs it.
