GoPro’s free firmware update announced October 13, 2026, is designed to make photo capture on the MISSION 1 Series more responsive and better suited to bursts. It adds immediate shutter response, continuous capture while the shutter is held, a buffer warning and a new capture sound. GoPro says the camera can capture more than 100 photos at 12MP or more than 20 50MP RAW photos in a continuous burst. Those are GoPro’s stated capacities, not independent test results.
The update supports calling the MISSION 1 Pro a more capable still-photo tool. It does not establish that photos are sharper or otherwise higher quality: GoPro has not announced a sensor or lens change, and the available announcement provides no controlled before-and-after image-quality test.

What the firmware changes for photography
GoPro describes the October 13 update as a ground-up rebuild of photo capture for the MISSION 1 Series: MISSION 1, MISSION 1 PRO and MISSION 1 PRO ILS. Its changes focus on how the camera responds when you take a photo and how it handles a run of shots.
- Immediate shutter response: pressing the shutter is intended to capture a photo right away.
- Continuous capture: hold the shutter to take a rapid succession of photos.
- Buffer indicator: an on-screen warning shows when the buffer is nearing its limit.
- Capture confirmation: a revised sound gives feedback for each captured photo.
GoPro states that continuous capture can produce more than 100 photos at 12MP, or more than 20 RAW photos at 50MP. These figures describe the manufacturer’s announced capacity; they are not independent measurements, and the announcement does not specify additional shooting conditions.

- What’s Included: LIT HERO Camera, Light Diffuser, Curved Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle + Thumb Screw, USB-C Cable
Does it improve image quality?
The update makes the capture process more responsive, but that is not the same as improving the image itself. GoPro’s launch specifications already listed a 50MP 1-inch sensor and 50MP RAW photo capture for the MISSION 1 PRO. The October announcement does not say the sensor or lens changed, nor does it publish a controlled comparison of sharpness, dynamic range, autofocus, exposure consistency or low-light still quality before and after the update.
So the supported conclusion is about speed and workflow: the camera is intended to react promptly and keep shooting while the button is held, with a warning as the buffer approaches its limit. Claims that the update makes photos sharper, cleaner or categorically better are not established by the announced features.

How to get the update
GoPro says the October photography experience is available as a free firmware update through the GoPro Quik app or GoPro.com. Its update guidance says the app route requires a smartphone or tablet and Wi-Fi; manual updating is also available.
- Choose an update route: use the GoPro Quik app on a smartphone or tablet connected to Wi-Fi, or use GoPro’s manual update option.
- Follow GoPro’s update instructions for your camera: confirm the model-specific instructions before installing. The support instructions referenced for manual updating are for MISSION 1 PRO ILS; their release number should not be treated as the current fixed-lens PRO version.
- After installation, check the camera’s photo behavior: test a shutter press and a held-shutter burst, and look for the buffer warning as the camera approaches its limit.
GoPro’s announcement does not identify a firmware version number for the October update, so verify the update offered for your exact model rather than relying on a version number from instructions for another model.

The companion app and other firmware news
The free MISSION Monitor app for iPhone and iPad was also updated to support the new photo-capture behavior and add histogram, waveform, RGB parade, false color and wireless camera connectivity. GoPro says the app requires iOS 18 or later. These are monitoring and exposure-assessment features; they do not change the camera’s sensor or establish improved final still-image quality.
GoPro also announced updated public beta Labs firmware with anamorphic-lens support, HyperSmooth support and pixel-aspect-ratio metadata for desktop tools. That feature set is specific to the interchangeable-lens MISSION 1 PRO ILS and is separate from the main still-photo update.

- High Dynamic Range Video + Photo: HERO12 Black takes its best-in-class image quality to the next level with HDR for both videos (5.3K and 4K) and photos. Great in environments with both shadows and bright light, HDR captures the subtle details of the scene that might typically blend into the darkness of shadows or disappear in the bright spots of your shot. The result is dynamic footage with true-to-life color and precision.
- Unbelieveable Image Quality: With 5.3K video that gives you 91% more resolution than 4K and an incredible 665% more than 1080p, HERO12 Black captures the action with crisp detail and cinematic image quality with High Dynamic Range (HDR) while also taking 27MP photos. You can also grab stunning photos up to 24.7MP of your favorite shots from your videos using the GoPro Quik app.
- Emmy Award- Winning HyperSmooth 6.0 Stabilization: HyperSmooth continues to set the bar for insanely smooth footage and has the hardware to back it up—a 2021 Emmy for In-Camera Sensor and Software Stabilization. HERO12 Black makes it even better by maximizing HyperSmooth AutoBoost performance with more stabilization while still delivering less image cropping. Bike, skate, ski, chase your kids through the park or get awesome pet POV shots—even the shakiest footage comes out silky smooth.
- Rugged + Waterproof to 33ft (10m): Completely waterproof and as tough as ever, HERO12 Black is ready to capture the fun on any adventure. Its legendary durability can take a beating and keep going, whether you’re ripping through mud, snow or water (down to 33ft/10m). A water-repelling lens cover even helps eliminate lens flare and other artifacts to make your photos and videos even more stunning.
- What's Included: HERO12 Black, Enduro Rechargeable Battery, Curved Adhesive Mount, Mounting Buckle + Thumb Screw, USB-C Cable
An earlier announcement, dated July 29, 2026, covered a different MISSION 1 and MISSION 1 PRO firmware update. It added compatibility with the MISSION 1 accessory ecosystem and changed image tuning, including contrast and tone in Dive mode, color accuracy and cinematic motion blur. The October photo announcement does not provide version numbers that establish how the two updates relate as a cumulative release.

If you already own a MISSION 1 Series camera, the announced changes are relevant if you want a more immediate shutter response or to capture a quick sequence without repeatedly pressing the button. The buffer indicator also gives feedback during a burst. GoPro says the update is free.
If you are judging the MISSION 1 PRO specifically on still-image quality, treat this firmware announcement as a workflow improvement, not proof of a camera-quality upgrade. The Point-and-Shoot Grip is an optional handheld accessory GoPro presents as a partner for the photo experience; it is sold separately or included with the MISSION 1 PRO Grip Edition, and is not required for the firmware features.
