Google Japan’s Gboard Conveyor Belt version is a documented do-it-yourself keyboard concept that sends keys toward a user’s fingers on moving belts. It is an intriguing reversal of a fixed keyboard, but the available evidence establishes a build project—not a finished retail product or a proven replacement for conventional keyboards.
What is the Gboard Conveyor Belt keyboard?
Google’s project repository calls it the Gboard Conveyor Belt version, or Gboard くるくる バージョン. Its central idea is simple to describe and unusual to see: instead of moving a hand across a stationary layout, keys travel on conveyor belts toward the user’s fingers. A report by Moneycontrol dated October 2, 2026 describes four moving rows and frames the concept as intended for one-handed typing. That is design intent, not evidence that the keyboard is faster, easier, or more comfortable to use.

The project is listed in Google’s mozc-devices repository, which states: “This is not an officially supported Google product.” The repository lists a release date of October 1, 2026. Its publication makes the project files available; it does not make the device an officially supported or ready-to-buy Google keyboard.
How does the moving-key design work?
The build guide describes four belt loops, with 29 links in each loop, for 116 links in total. Low-profile switches and keycaps are mounted to the links, so the keys circulate toward the fingertips. The approach turns the familiar keyboard relationship around: rather than reaching to keys in a fixed position, the user is meant to receive moving keys.

Moneycontrol describes the concept as a prototype for one-handed use. Neither that report nor Google’s assembly guide provides comparative typing tests. There are no published results in these sources for typing speed, error rate, comfort, accessibility, or productivity. The mechanism is documented; any claim that it improves those outcomes would go beyond the evidence.
What does the official build involve?
Google’s build guide describes two editions: a motorized Moving Keys Edition and a Bluetooth Connection Edition marked “Coming soon.” The detailed instructions are for the Moving Keys Edition. The guide’s parts and assembly requirements include:

- 3D-printed case and mechanism parts.
- Shafts, bearings, sprockets, timing pulleys, and a timing belt.
- A motor and driver support, plus screws and other assembly hardware.
The guide does not identify a complete retail kit or a specific compatible switch model. Anyone attempting the build should check component dimensions and electrical compatibility against the guide rather than assume that a particular off-the-shelf part will fit.

The documented route is a DIY build using Google’s project files and instructions, not a finished keyboard offered for purchase. Moneycontrol reported on October 2, 2026 that there were no plans to sell it commercially. That statement is attributable to the report; Google’s repository independently establishes that this is an unsupported project with build materials.

It may appeal to keyboard hobbyists interested in an unconventional mechanism, especially those comfortable sourcing parts and assembling a moving, motorized device. It is not a straightforward option for someone seeking a supported everyday keyboard: the guide requires fabrication and component assembly, and the available sources do not establish real-world performance or ergonomic benefits.

For now, the conveyor-belt keyboard is best understood as an experimental engineering idea. It asks a worthwhile design question—what if the keyboard moved instead of the person?—but the build documentation and prototype description do not show that moving keys outperform a fixed layout. Answering that would require measured comparisons of speed, errors, comfort, and practical use, none of which are reported in the available sources.
