Google’s Motion Sense Hands-On: What Pixel 4 Gestures Could—and Couldn’t—Control

Google’s Motion Sense made a small set of touch-free actions work on the Pixel 4 and Pixel 4 XL, especially waking the phone, preparing face unlock, skipping music, and snoozing alarms. But it did not let users control Android or most games with free-form hand movements. In launch-era testing, its supported gestures generally worked well; the bigger limitation was how few things they could do.

What Motion Sense was

Motion Sense was Google’s consumer implementation of Project Soli, a radar-based gesture-sensing project. Soli was the broader research effort; Motion Sense was the smaller set of features Google actually shipped on the Pixel 4 series. It used radar and signal analysis, not a camera tracking a hand in the air.

A launch-era hands-on report described Soli as using 60 GHz sensing and Doppler-based analysis of reflected electromagnetic signals. It also cited capabilities such as tracking at approximately 18,000 frames per second and a theoretical detection range far beyond the phone’s practical interaction area. Those technical descriptions are not a measure of what Pixel 4 owners could do: the phone recognized predefined motion categories near its upper sensor area, generally within roughly a foot to a foot and a half, depending on the action. The user experience was not an air touchscreen for arbitrary gestures. GamesBeat’s Pixel 4 hands-on is the source for these launch-era descriptions.

What gestures the Pixel 4 recognized

Motion Sense category What it did Practical qualification
Presence Detected nearby movement while the phone rested on a surface and supported an ambient-display behavior. The launch-era report described a detection range from about 0.6 inches to about one foot for this mode.
Reach Waking or activating the display and preparing face recognition as a hand approached; it could also help quiet an incoming ringtone or alarm. The phone needed to sense the hand approaching its top sensor area.
Swipe or wave Skipping tracks in supported music apps, dismissing or silencing calls, and snoozing alarms. For alarms, the reported gesture snoozed rather than dismissed the alarm outright.

The distinction between reach and wave mattered: bringing a hand toward the phone was not the same input as moving it laterally across the sensor. These were short, discrete commands, not continuous navigation, text entry, aiming, or general app control.

How well the gestures worked in testing

The GamesBeat evaluation used a Pixel 4 for approximately one week. It found reach detection particularly consistent, and reported that music controls and alarm gestures also worked reliably in the supported situations. That is evidence for a limited set of actions, not a claim that every wave worked in every position or that every app responded.

  • Reach and face-unlock preparation: the strongest demonstration in the hands-on report. The phone reacted as a hand approached, although similar convenience effects could be produced on other phones using motion or proximity-related sensors.
  • Music skipping: useful when a compatible media app was playing, including in the background. It remained a next-or-previous-track shortcut, not broad control of the app.
  • Alarms and calls: the report described reliable alarm snoozing and support for dismissing or silencing calls. Snoozing did not mean turning an alarm off.
  • Games and general apps: a small number of specifically designed experiences used gestures. The feature did not automatically add gesture input to ordinary games or apps.

Reliability and usefulness are separate tests. A well-recognized wave can save a tap, but its value depends on whether the action is needed often and is easier than touching a visible control.

Which games and interactive experiences used Motion Sense?

Pokémon Wave Hello

Google partnered with The Pokémon Company on Pokémon Wave Hello, a promotional experience connected to Pokémon Sword and Shield. Players could wave above the display to prompt a Pokémon reaction, choose among five Pokémon, and use an upward swipe to reveal details such as height, weight, type, and abilities. It was an approachable introduction to radar gestures, but a limited showcase rather than evidence that games generally supported Motion Sense.

Headed South

Ustwo Studios’ Headed South combined touch input with a Motion Sense swipe. The player used touch for basic movement, guiding a bird named Soli toward another bird’s slipstream; a swipe added a temporary speed boost. Because touch remained part of the control scheme, the game demonstrated gestures as a supplement, not a replacement for the touchscreen.

Come Alive wallpapers

The Pixel 4 included six “Come Alive” wallpapers that reacted subtly to movement. Examples in the hands-on report included a cactus bending toward a wave and abstract objects stretching before returning to position. These ambient effects showed that the phone could respond to nearby motion, but they were not games or substantial app controls.

Which apps supported Motion Sense?

At launch, the largest reported app category was music playback. The GamesBeat article identified Google Play Music, Spotify, Deezer, Amazon Music, Apple Music, Pandora, Shazam, and SiriusXM among the services, along with more than 15 additional media apps. It described integration through Android’s media-controls API.

This is a historical launch-era list, not a current compatibility guarantee. Google Play Music is named as it existed in the 2019 coverage; its inclusion should not be read as a statement that the service remains available. More importantly, media playback support did not mean that Motion Sense controlled each app’s full interface. Support depended on compatible playback controls, and the launch-era evidence does not establish present-day app behavior.

Why developers could not turn it into a general gesture platform

The launch-era report characterized Motion Sense APIs as locked down and developer freedom as limited, with media controls the main broadly described path. Developers did not receive a universal radar stream they could freely map to any gesture or interaction. The system centered on approved gesture categories and selected integrations.

That constrained experimentation. A developer could design a particular game interaction, as the examples showed, but an existing game would not become gesture-controlled automatically. The narrow input vocabulary, limited access, and need to support a feature tied to one phone family all made it harder to justify building complex gesture-first software.

Where Motion Sense was available—and what could disable it

Motion Sense required Pixel 4-series hardware containing Soli. The launch-era report said radar certification requirements limited availability by country and that the feature could disable itself in unsupported regions or when airplane mode was enabled. It identified the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Denmark, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United Arab Emirates as supported markets at launch, while noting omissions including Mexico and New Zealand and an initial plan to omit Japan. This is historical launch information, not a current availability list.

The practical interaction area was near the top of the phone, not across a room. App-specific actions also required compatible software. These constraints matter when evaluating the feature as a platform: developers could not assume every Pixel 4 user in every market could rely on it in every state.

When touch-free gestures were useful

Motion Sense made most sense for quick, low-complexity commands when reaching for the screen was inconvenient: skipping a track, snoozing an alarm, or waking the display. A short gesture can feel natural for these binary actions when the phone is nearby and the interface gives clear feedback.

  • For music listeners: track skipping without touching the screen was the clearest app-level convenience, when using a supported player.
  • For alarm users: a wave offered a quick snooze, though it did not turn the alarm off.
  • For mobile gamers: the demos were interesting, but the examples do not show a broad game-control layer or make gestures a substitute for touch.
  • For developers: Soli suggested new interaction possibilities, but limited API access and regional availability made it a difficult foundation for a wide ecosystem.
  • For most buyers: it was a distinctive extra with a few useful shortcuts, rather than a reason on its own to choose the Pixel 4.

Touchscreens remain more visible and precise for many tasks. Voice assistants can handle more complex commands but are not always suitable in noisy or silent settings. Physical buttons, earbuds, watches, or steering-wheel controls can be more predictable for media. These alternatives solve overlapping convenience problems in different ways; none is identical to Motion Sense.

How to judge a gesture feature like Motion Sense

For a fair evaluation, look beyond whether a demo recognizes one wave. The meaningful questions are whether it works repeatedly from the expected position, teaches the gesture clearly, confirms detection, responds quickly, and keeps mistakes low-cost. Then ask whether the action is genuinely easier than tapping, whether enough software supports it, and whether developers can build experiences beyond the manufacturer’s showcases.

Motion Sense made a credible case for radar as a way to detect short-range movement on a phone. Its strongest Pixel 4 uses were discrete convenience actions, not continuous control. The hardware could sense more than the shipped product exposed; the limited gesture set, app ecosystem, developer access, and geography kept that promise from becoming a general touchless interface.
