Who is Michael Terrell, and what did his role cover?
Terrell led Google’s development of advanced energy technologies and market solutions to power its global data-center fleet, according to his 2026 CEBA speaker biography. The bio connects his work to Google’s aspiration for 24/7 carbon-free energy and initiatives involving enhanced geothermal, advanced nuclear, load shifting, demand response, and policy and market structures. It also describes earlier work on decarbonizing Google’s operations and value chain and commercializing carbon-removal technologies.

In his departure post, Terrell looked back on corporate clean-energy procurement, wind, solar and storage, clean-firm technologies, and grid-flexibility measures such as load shifting, demand response and virtual power plants. These are his descriptions of the program and his tenure, not an independent assessment of its results.
How large is Google’s clean-energy effort?
On an Alphabet investor-relations call in November 2025, Google Global Head of Data Center Energy Amanda Peterson Corio said that since 2010 the company had signed more than 170 clean-energy purchase agreements covering over 22 GW worldwide, and had invested more than $3.7 billion in clean-energy projects and partnerships. These are company-reported figures stated in 2025, not independently audited current totals. See the Alphabet investor-relations materials.

What projects illustrate the program?
Energy Digital’s October 9, 2026 report describes several projects and agreements associated with Google’s advanced-energy work. They differ in status: reported power delivery, an agreement with a future target, prospective sites and a capacity agreement should not be read as equivalent operating supply.
| Technology or project | What the report says | Status and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Enhanced geothermal with Fervo Energy, Nevada | The partnership dates to 2021. | The project began delivering power in November 2023, according to Energy Digital’s October 9, 2026 report. |
| Small modular reactors with Kairos Power | Google agreed in October 2024 to support up to 500 MW. | The first reactors are expected online by 2030; this is a future expectation, not current generation. |
| Potential nuclear sites with Elementl Power | Google backed preparations for three U.S. sites. | The sites are potential projects, not a statement that plants are built or operating. |
| Geothermal with Ormat Technologies | An agreement announced in February 2026 covers up to 150 MW. | The report states a capacity figure; it does not establish that the full amount is already delivering power. |
Terrell’s post also names long-duration energy storage and demand-side flexibility. These approaches serve different functions: generation produces electricity, storage can shift energy across time, and load shifting or demand response changes when consumption occurs. Their contribution depends on project maturity, location, deployment timing and the electricity-market arrangements that enable them.
