Google’s Find My Device network helps locate a lost Android device even when it can’t connect to Wi‑Fi or cellular. It works by letting nearby, opted-in Android devices detect your device’s offline signals and relay an approximate location through Google services.
If you’re concerned about offline tracking or want to reduce participation, you can opt out. The exact labels vary by Android version and manufacturer, but the control is usually tied to Find My Device network participation and location-related system settings.

This guide focuses on opting out of the offline network on Android—plus the related account and troubleshooting steps that help when the toggle isn’t where you expect.

The Find My Device offline feature is designed for devices that can’t directly connect to Google. When another nearby device (the “helper”) detects your device, that helper can provide location information associated with your missing device.
#1 Best Overall
- THE EVERYTHING TRACKER: Protect lost or stolen stuff and make family life easier. Attach to everyday things like keys, water bottles, or bags
- STAY SAFE WITH SOS: Discreetly trigger an SOS alert to your loved ones in unsafe situations
- FIND YOUR THINGS: Ring your misplaced Tile, or track it down in the free app
- FIND YOUR PHONE: Phone hiding under a cushion? Use your Tile to make it ring — even when silenced
- USE WITH LIFE360: Add your Tiles to Life360 — a top family connection and safety app – to see everything and everyone on the same map
Opting out generally means your device won’t participate as a helper for others’ offline location signals, and it may also change how your own offline location updates are handled depending on the exact feature configuration.
Before you opt out: prerequisites and what you may lose
Before changing settings, confirm a few basics. Many “missing toggle” issues are simply because the required prerequisites aren’t enabled.
- Android: You need an Android device signed into your Google Account.
- Google Play services: Keep it installed and up to date, since Find My Device controls depend on it.
- System location features: Some toggles only appear when Location is on and at least certain location permissions are granted.
What you may lose after opting out:
- Reduced ability to help with offline discovery of other devices.
- Potentially fewer offline location updates for your own device if the feature depends on network participation.
- A slightly reduced “find even when offline” experience.
How to opt out on Android (the standard method)
On most Android phones, the opt-out control is inside the Find My Device settings for your device. Turn off the network participation setting (wording varies).

Try this path first. The naming differs across Samsung, Pixel, and other brands, but the structure is usually similar.
- Open Settings.
- Go to Security & privacy (or Security).
- Tap Find My Device.
- Look for a toggle related to the offline network or participation, commonly phrased like Find My Device network or Improve Find My Device / Allow offline finding.
- Set the toggle to Off.
- Confirm any additional prompts and exit Settings.
If your phone shows both “device is discoverable” and “offline network participation,” disable both where available. Many devices treat them separately.
If you don’t see the toggle: check related location and device-access settings
Some manufacturers hide the offline-network toggle unless Location is enabled and Google is allowed to use location in the background.

- Easy Find & Family Sharing with Apple Find My: Quickly pair the FineTrack tag with your iPhone or iPad in just one tap. Using the pre-installed Find My app, add the Air Tracker tag to the Items tab to instantly locate and track your keys, wallet, and other valuables. With iOS 17 or later, you can also share your tracker’s location with family members, so everyone can help keep items safe. (Note: Compatible with iOS devices only, not for Android.)
- Smart Tracking Made Easy: Whether Bluetooth Air Tracker Tag is nearby or far away, locate it easily with the Find My app. When within Bluetooth range, play a sound to quickly find the item tracker tag; when out of range, the Apple Find My network uses its vast ecosystem of Apple devices to provide the item finder’s latest location. Enjoy global tracking with Apple’s Find My network without any subscription fees.
- Lost Item Alerts & Lost Mode: When your Air Tracker Tag moves out of range, the Apple Find My app sends an instant lost alert with the last known location. If your item is confirmed lost, you can activate Lost Mode and leave your contact information so nearby Apple devices can remotely access it and help locate your tracker, making recovery quick and easy.
- 2-Year Battery Life & Child-Safe Certified: The UGREEN 4-pack Bluetooth tracker tags feature a replaceable battery that lasts up to 2 years, outperforming standard 1-year trackers. You can check the tracker’s battery anytime in the app and replace it when needed, keeping your valuables always protected. Item finder tags are also UL4200A certified, preventing children from accidentally swallowing the battery.
- Your Privacy, Fully Protected: Certified by Apple MFi, this Bluetooth Air Tracker Tag uses end-to-end encryption to keep your location data private and secure. All communications are anonymous and encrypted, and no location data is stored on the device. Even if your item is lost, your information remains protected and cannot be accessed without your permission — not by Apple, the manufacturer, or any third party.
- Open Settings > Location.
- Turn Location On temporarily (yes, temporarily—so the setting appears).
- Go to Settings > Location > App permissions (or App permissions).
- Find Google Play services and ensure permission is set appropriately (commonly Allow while in use or Allow all the time depending on your preference; the toggle may not appear otherwise).
- Return to Settings > Security & privacy > Find My Device and check again for the offline network toggle.
After you successfully opt out, you can decide whether to keep Location on or turn it back off based on your broader privacy and usability needs.
Opt out using your Google Account controls
The offline Find My Device network is primarily controlled at the device level, but your Google Account also hosts controls that can affect location-based discovery. Use these as a second layer.
Location-related controls to review
- On a phone or computer, open myaccount.google.com.
- Go to Data & privacy.
- Find Location History (if present) and set it to Off.
- Look for Web & App Activity and ensure the setting matches your preferences.
Turning off Location History doesn’t always remove offline network participation by itself, but it reduces storage and retention of certain location data types.
Data permissions that affect discovery
- Go to myaccount.google.com > Security.
- Review any controls connected to device visibility and activity.
- Under Privacy sections, check whether any location-related sharing options are enabled.
Because Google’s UI changes over time, treat these pages as verification and reinforcement—then rely on the device’s Find My Device toggle as the main opt-out.
Device-level alternatives when you can’t disable the network toggle
In some situations (enterprise-managed devices, region rollouts, or older OS builds), the explicit network toggle may be unavailable. If so, you can still reduce offline participation and background detection signals using system controls.
Turn off Location Accuracy features that feed the system
These controls often influence whether devices can use advanced location modes.

- A VARIETY OF TRACKERS FOR YOUR THINGS: A selection of Tiles to help keep track of your keys, wallet, remotes, and more. Keep track of more for less with our multi-packs or give them to your friends and family as a gift
- FIND YOUR THINGS: Ring your misplaced Tile, or track it down in the free app
- FIND YOUR PHONE: Phone hiding under a cushion? Use your Tile to make it ring — even when silenced
- STAY SAFE WITH SOS: Discreetly trigger an SOS alert to your loved ones in unsafe situations

- Open Settings > Location.
- Tap Location services or Location accuracy.
- Turn off options such as Improve accuracy or Use Wi‑Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning, if your device offers them.
Even with Find My Device participation toggled off, these settings help ensure your phone isn’t using extra radios to support location.
Disable or restrict Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi scanning (power and privacy impact)
Offline discovery relies on nearby detection. Limiting scanning reduces your participation as a helper.
- Open Settings > Location.
- Find scanning options such as Wi‑Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning.
- Set them to Off.
Expect trade-offs: fewer location refinements and sometimes reduced reliability of other location-based features.

Stop background Google services updates temporarily (with a caution)
Disabling background activity can reduce how location features behave, but it can also break Find My Device entirely.
- Open Settings > Apps.
- Search Google or Google Play services.
- Go to Battery or Mobile data & Wi‑Fi options.
- Choose Restricted or reduce background usage if offered.
- Test Find My Device after changes.
If you’re doing this for privacy, do it briefly for validation and then return to a stable configuration. Long-term restriction can lead to missing notifications and broken device management features.
How to verify you’re opted out
Don’t rely on assumption. Verify from both the device settings and the Find My Device experience.

Check the Find My Device status
- Open Settings > Security & privacy > Find My Device.
- Confirm the offline-network toggle is set to Off.
- Confirm Find My Device itself is configured the way you want (some users keep basic Find My Device on but turn off the offline network).
If the toggle flips back after a while, you likely have an enterprise policy, a system update reset, or a “battery optimization” interaction.

- Open Settings > Location and ensure the accuracy/scanning options match your privacy plan.
- Open Settings > Apps > Google Play services.
- Review Permissions and Battery settings to confirm background behavior aligns with your changes.
Finally, run a quick test: lock the screen and temporarily disconnect Wi‑Fi and mobile data. If you still see offline-related behavior, note the exact time and compare it to any alerts you receive in the Find My Device interface.
Troubleshooting: common problems and what to try
Toggle is missing or greyed out
This is the most common blocker. Try these in order.
- Update Google Play services and Google app via the Play Store.
- Temporarily turn Location On to reveal settings, then turn it back off after you opt out.
- Check if your device is managed (work/school) under a policy. Managed profiles can hide or lock privacy toggles.
- Reboot once after changing toggles; some OEM UI layers don’t refresh immediately.
It won’t save changes
If the switch reverts:
- Check for Data Saver or aggressive battery modes from the OEM or third-party apps.
- Disable VPN temporarily and try again if the device manages network requests through the VPN.
- Make sure you’re on the latest system update and the latest Play services.
Offline location still appears in alerts
Two reasons are common: delayed system behavior or you didn’t turn off both the offline network participation toggle and related scanning/permission controls.
- Confirm the Find My Device offline-network toggle is Off.
- Confirm scanning options (Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth scanning) aren’t enabling additional detection.
- Wait 24 hours and check again; offline discovery signals can take time to be processed and reported.
If it still doesn’t match your expectations, capture the date/time of the alert and compare it to your recent setting changes.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Turning off Location History only: It helps with storage, but it may not stop offline network participation.
- Forgetting background permissions: Some toggles depend on Google Play services having the ability to run location-related components.
- Confusing Find My Device with the offline network: You can often keep basic Find My Device on while disabling the offline helper network.
- Assuming one toggle covers everything: Many devices expose two or more related controls (device discovery vs. offline network participation).
FAQ
Does opting out stop tracking by everyone?
Opting out reduces or stops your device from acting as a helper in the offline network. It doesn’t mean your phone becomes invisible to all tracking methods, but it does target the specific offline discovery system.

Will my own device still be discoverable when offline?
That depends on which controls you disable. If you turn off the offline-network participation feature, you may reduce offline discovery behavior for your device.
Is this available on all Android versions?
No. Availability and wording depend on Android version, OEM customizations, and staged rollouts. If you don’t see the toggle, you’ll need the fallback controls (location scanning, permissions) and Play services updates.
What if I’m using a work-managed phone?
Enterprise policies can lock Find My Device and privacy-related toggles. If the toggle is greyed out or missing, contact your IT administrator for the exact policy configuration.

Does this apply to iPhone or iPad?
Google’s Find My Device offline network is for Android ecosystems. iPhone and iPad don’t use Find My Device, though they may have their own tracking/discovery features through Apple’s services.
Final Thoughts
To opt out of Google Find My Device network offline tracking, prioritize the Find My Device toggle inside Android’s Security & privacy settings. Then reinforce it with location scanning and account-level location controls.
If you can’t find the toggle, update Google Play services, confirm location permissions, and use the fallback radio-scanning restrictions to reduce participation while keeping your device behavior predictable.
