Speaking at the International AI Summit in Dublin, Hassabis presented climate benefits as a future possibility, not a proven environmental balance sheet.
What Hassabis said in Dublin
At the Dublin summit, Hassabis said: “I actually think with the help of AI, that’s what’s going to end up giving us the technology to tackle the climate question.” His argument is that increasingly capable systems may accelerate scientific discovery in fields where better tools could materially reduce emissions or improve resilience.

He specifically said AI systems, if built in the right way, should help with “climate modeling and weather modeling.” More accurate forecasts could improve understanding of long-term climate trends, while better short-term weather prediction could support earlier warnings and more targeted responses to floods, storms, heat waves and other hazards.
Where AI could contribute to climate solutions
Climate and weather modeling
Hassabis identified modeling as one of the clearest potential applications. AI could assist researchers in analyzing complex atmospheric and climate data, testing scenarios and improving prediction. His remarks describe an opportunity rather than a demonstrated result: the report does not provide a measured accuracy improvement, operational deployment figure or emissions reduction attributable to an AI climate model.

Disaster prediction
More capable forecasting could also help predict disasters and give communities, infrastructure operators and emergency agencies more time to act. The practical value would depend on data quality, local coverage, reliability and whether warnings reach people in time; none of those outcomes was quantified in the summit report.
Fusion and other energy technologies
Hassabis pointed to fusion as another area where AI might help scientists search through difficult design and control problems. If research eventually produces commercially viable low-carbon power, the climate impact could be substantial, but fusion remains a research challenge and the Dublin comments did not claim that AI has solved it.

Superconductors, batteries and solar materials
He also mentioned superconductors, batteries and materials for solar power. AI-assisted discovery could narrow the number of candidates researchers need to synthesize and test, potentially speeding work on better energy storage, transmission and generation. These are prospective gains, not results established by the report.

Hassabis distinguished physical and natural sciences from areas in which AI has already shown striking performance, including mathematics, coding and games. Scientific work requires interaction with the physical world: experiments, instruments, messy measurements and repeated feedback loops. It also requires people to decide which questions are worth asking.

“I think that’s the hardest thing in science is actually asking and articulating the right question,” Hassabis said. “That’s even harder than finding the answer.” The point matters for climate applications because useful systems would need more than pattern recognition. They would have to help formulate testable hypotheses, connect models to experiments and remain subject to human scientific judgment.
The environmental cost behind the optimism
The hopeful case sits beside a growing infrastructure burden. Training and running frontier models requires expanding data centers, and those facilities can increase electricity demand, water use and pressure on local grids. Where new power is supplied by fossil-fuel generation, additional AI capacity can also increase associated emissions.

The report describes those pressures qualitatively. It does not publish a named statistic for AI’s electricity consumption, water footprint, greenhouse-gas emissions or full lifecycle impact, and it does not establish whether potential climate benefits currently outweigh those costs. That makes the environmental argument a question of future performance and deployment choices rather than a settled comparison.

How the Nobel recognition fits the argument
The report also invokes the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, awarded to Demis Hassabis, John Jumper and David Baker for AI-related work on protein structures. That recognition illustrates AI’s ability to contribute to a difficult scientific domain, but it is not evidence that AI has already delivered a net climate benefit. Protein-structure breakthroughs and climate technologies involve different data, experiments, deployment pathways and environmental trade-offs.

What readers should take from Hassabis’s position
- Hassabis believes AI could become a tool for discovering climate-relevant technologies.
- His examples span prediction, disaster preparedness, power generation, energy storage and solar materials.
- He acknowledges that advanced AI depends on resource-intensive data-center infrastructure.
- Scientific discovery remains harder than benchmarked digital tasks because it requires real-world experimentation and judgment.
- The Dublin report offers qualitative optimism, not quantified proof that AI’s climate benefits exceed its environmental costs.
The unresolved test
The central issue is not whether AI can be described as helpful or harmful in the abstract. It is whether specific systems produce verified climate gains—such as better forecasts, cheaper low-carbon materials or more reliable energy technologies—large enough to justify the electricity, water, hardware and fuel required to build and operate them. Hassabis’s remarks make the optimistic case, but the evidence cited in the report leaves that accounting open.
