Separately, Google Search’s AI Overviews really did surface a glue-on-pizza answer in 2024. The two stories make an arresting headline, but there is no evidence that climate performance caused the AI error.
Is Google on track for its 2030 climate targets?
Google has not yet reached its 2030 deadline. Its June 30, 2026 Environmental Report, covering 2025, says the company’s net-zero and 24/7 carbon-free energy goals are “moonshots” and that reaching them is getting harder. The report points to AI infrastructure growth outpacing grid decarbonization and rising supply-chain emissions. Those statements describe increasing difficulty, not a final verdict on whether Google will meet the goals by 2030.

Alphabet’s 2024 Form 10-K describes an ambition to reach net-zero emissions across its operations and value chain by 2030. It aims to cut combined absolute Scope 1, Scope 2 market-based, and Scope 3 emissions 50% from a 2019 base year. Separately, it aims to operate on 24/7 carbon-free energy on every grid where it operates by 2030. The filing cautions that total greenhouse-gas emissions may rise before falling toward the absolute-reduction target.
What Google reported for 2025
In its 2026 report, Google said it signed agreements for more than 12 GW of net-new clean energy in 2025 and reduced operational emissions by 2%. It also reported a 25% year-over-year increase in supply-chain emissions. These are company-reported figures, and they describe different parts of the emissions picture: a reduction in operational emissions does not mean total value-chain emissions fell.

- Attention-grabbing design meets the latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera on the new Google Pixel 11 Pro; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can live in the moment[1]; and the phone is available in two sizes
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Stay informed without looking at your screen: When your phone is face down, Pixel HiLight gently alerts you with subtle glowing lights when your favorite contacts are calling or you’re talking with Gemini; exclusive to Google Pixel 11 Pro phones
- Magic Capture catches the moment as you live it: With just one tap, Pixel 11 Pro captures video and photos, and automatically edits, crops, and unblurs a curated collection, ready to share – and you get the memory of how it felt to be in the moment
- Two new cameras for more brilliant photos: A larger telephoto sensor captures 30% more light for clear, beautiful photos and videos, even in the dark[3]; Pixel’s longest zoom ever helps you capture details from impressive distances[4]
How that differs from the 2024 figures
Google’s 2025 Environmental Report covers 2024, not 2025. It reported that data-center electricity demand rose 27%, hourly carbon-free energy use increased from 64% to 66%, and total emissions rose 11% year over year, largely because of supply-chain emissions.
| Reporting year | Reported measure | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | Operational emissions fell 2%; supply-chain emissions rose 25% year over year. | These are distinct emissions categories, not a single total-emissions figure. |
| 2025 | More than 12 GW of net-new clean-energy agreements signed. | An energy procurement figure; it is not itself a measure of emissions eliminated. |
| 2024 | Data-center electricity demand rose 27%; hourly carbon-free energy use rose from 64% to 66%. | Demand and hourly carbon-free energy matching are separate measures. |
| 2024 | Total emissions rose 11% year over year, largely due to supply-chain emissions. | This is a total-emissions figure and should not be confused with the 2025 operational-emissions change. |
Google also estimated that five of its products enabled 26 million metric tons of emissions reductions in 2024. That estimate concerns reductions enabled through product use; it is not a reduction in Google’s own corporate footprint and should not be added to, or substituted for, the company’s emissions figures.

Did Google AI really recommend putting glue on pizza?
Yes. In a May 30, 2024 post, Google Search vice president Elizabeth Reid acknowledged that some AI Overviews were “odd, inaccurate or unhelpful.” She said forum content could lead to advice “like using glue to get cheese to stick to pizza.” The Associated Press reported that the widely shared example came from a sarcastic Reddit comment.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe episode illustrates how a system can produce bad advice when it treats joking or satirical material as a usable answer without enough context. It does not show that every screenshot circulating at the time was authentic: Google said some viral screenshots were fabricated, while acknowledging that real AI Overviews had also been wrong.
What did Google change after the AI Overview errors?
Google said it made more than a dozen technical improvements after the 2024 incident. Its stated changes included better detection of nonsensical queries, limiting satire and humor content, limiting user-generated content that could supply misleading advice, and restricting Overviews for queries where they were not proving helpful.
Those are measures Google described at the time, not proof that AI Overviews are now error-free. The Associated Press also reported concerns from a Purdue mycology professor about important omissions in a separate AI-generated mushroom answer. The pizza example and that concern highlight different failure modes: unreliable source context in one case, and incomplete information in another.

What the climate story and the AI mistake do—and do not—show
The climate reports address energy use and greenhouse-gas emissions; the pizza episode concerns Search’s selection and presentation of information. The available evidence does not connect Google’s climate progress to the AI Overview error, so it would be misleading to say Google’s emissions caused the answer. The headline’s juxtaposition is rhetorical, not a documented causal chain.

Together, the stories do show why separate kinds of accountability matter. Climate targets must be judged against clearly defined emissions boundaries, baselines, and deadlines. AI answers must be judged for accuracy, context, and how reliably their sources support the advice. Success or failure on one measure does not establish success or failure on the other.
