Google has not officially explained the increase. Reports point to rising memory and other component costs as the likely market explanation, but that remains unconfirmed context rather than company guidance. It is therefore not accurate to say Google confirmed that memory inflation caused the hike.

The increase also clashes with Google’s launch positioning. Product Manager Laura Kastilani described the phone as packing “core Pixel experiences into a sleek, durable design for just $499,” while Google said its A-series phones offer helpful features “at an accessible price point.”
Is the Pixel 10a still worth $599?
The 10a remains a capable midrange phone. Google lists a 6.3-inch display, Tensor G4 processor, 48MP main and 13MP ultrawide cameras, more than 30 hours of rated battery life, IP68 protection and seven years of updates. New 10a features include a brighter display, faster charging, Satellite SOS and Camera Coach.

At $599, however, those improvements are harder to justify because the Pixel 9a uses the same Tensor G4 platform and similar 48MP/13MP camera hardware while offering the same more-than-30-hour battery rating, IP68 protection and seven-year update commitment. The 10a is the better choice if its brighter screen, quicker charging or newer safety and camera tools matter to you; it is not a clear performance or longevity leap.

Should you buy the Pixel 9a instead?
For most budget-conscious shoppers, yes—provided you can find a genuine unlocked model with a valid warranty. The 9a launched at $499 and has been observed at about $399 from retailers.
