Google’s Android XR glasses are called ‘Martha’ in companion app

A new report claims Google’s Android XR glasses appear as Martha inside a companion app. That’s the kind of detail that doesn’t tell you the final product name, but it can give real clues about how the hardware is being developed and wired into software.

If you’ve seen device codenames pop up in app text or manifests before, you already know the pattern: early internal labels often survive longer than public branding. The interesting part is what you can infer—and how you can confirm it without guessing.

What it means that Android XR glasses are called Martha

In most app ecosystems, a name like Martha is usually an internal identifier—either a codename for the target hardware or a label used by the companion app to select the correct pairing and configuration path.

“Martha” as an internal name vs a consumer-facing brand

A codename is typically used by engineers to keep assets organized: models, profiles, provisioning templates, analytics events, and feature flags. The consumer-facing marketing name (if any) could be completely different—or still undecided.

So treat “Martha” as a hint about device lineage, not a confirmation of the final retail name.

Where these names usually show up (app strings, manifests, backend IDs)

Companion apps often contain hardcoded strings or resource names that are easier to debug than opaque IDs. “Martha” might exist as one or more of the following:

  • Local app strings used for logging or internal UI text.
  • Bundle or resource names that map to device templates.
  • Configuration keys sent to a server during pairing/provisioning.
  • Analytics identifiers tied to a specific hardware target.

Why companion apps often reveal device details early

Companion apps exist because the headset needs help with setup, authentication, and early configuration. Those steps require the app to know what it’s pairing with, and internal labels tend to leak into the build.

Connection flows, pairing flows, and backend provisioning

During setup, apps commonly perform a sequence like: device discovery → pairing/token exchange → account authorization → feature configuration download. Each stage benefits from a stable “device type” identifier—even if that identifier is just “Martha” during internal development.

That’s why you sometimes see these names appear in endpoints, logs, or pairing UI—because the app is selecting a specific configuration bundle.

Why developers leave breadcrumbs in production builds

Even when an app goes through public distribution, teams still retain internal identifiers for diagnostics. It’s common to see:

  • Environment tags (staging vs production)
  • Model family tags (so logs can be filtered)
  • Feature-flag group names (so rollouts can be segmented)

That’s also why a codename appearing in one place doesn’t automatically guarantee it appears everywhere—or that it will remain stable across versions.

How to verify the Martha detail yourself

You can’t always prove a codename’s meaning just by seeing it in an app. But you can validate whether the claim is grounded in actual app content and whether it’s tied to XR setup logic.

Check app package and build artifacts (no reverse engineering required)

If you have access to the companion app on Android, start with what you can confirm safely:

  1. Open the app’s listing in Google Play and note the version and last updated date.
  2. From your phone, check Settings > Apps > [app name] > App details and record the installed version.
  3. Look for an in-app Help, About, or Diagnostics screen and search for “Martha” in any visible logs or labels.

If you don’t find it in the UI, that doesn’t disprove the claim—many codenames only exist in non-visible resources.

Search strings/resources in the APK (strings and manifests)

If you’re comfortable inspecting the app package, you can extract and search for the literal term Martha. The goal is to see what it’s near.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Download the APK of the companion app from a trusted source (or extract it from your device if you have the tooling).
  2. Use a text search tool to scan for the string Martha.
  3. When you find hits, capture the surrounding context: file name, resource key, or nearby identifiers.
  4. Check whether it appears alongside pairing-related terms like pair, provision, device, or headset.

If “Martha” is only present in a generic analytics file or a totally unrelated feature flag, the signal is weaker. If it’s near setup and device-type routing, the signal is stronger.

Cross-check with device IDs and server endpoints

For a stronger confirmation, look for whether “Martha” maps to the same identifiers used during real setup attempts:

  1. Start a pairing flow in a controlled environment (no production account changes if you don’t want them).
  2. Monitor logs on-device (e.g., via Android Studio Logcat) for device-type strings.
  3. Confirm whether the same device-type label appears in app logs when discovery and provisioning happen.
  4. Optionally, compare behavior across two app versions to see if “Martha” remains tied to the same setup path.

Even if you can’t fully interpret the endpoints, matching the label to an actual provisioning step is the key.

What to watch for if Martha is a real Android XR glasses codename

If “Martha” truly corresponds to Android XR glasses hardware, future app updates often show additional, consistent references around the same device type.

App updates that reference XR hardware features

Look for new strings or modules that mention capabilities you’d expect from XR hardware. Examples include:

  • Tracking (head pose, spatial mapping)
  • Audio routing (microphone or spatial audio configuration)
  • Display/display pipeline settings (brightness modes, calibration steps)
  • Privacy controls (microphone/camera toggles, indicator states)

When those references appear alongside the same internal device label, it’s usually a meaningful sign.

Pairing UX changes (Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi provisioning)

XR setups commonly require more than “pair and done.” Watch for app release notes or UI changes that imply additional provisioning steps, such as:

  1. More detailed Bluetooth pairing screens
  2. Wi‑Fi provisioning prompts
  3. Firmware update steps before first use
  4. Progress states that mention model-specific capabilities

Permission prompts that correlate to headset capabilities

When the headset can do new things, the companion app may request additional permissions or show new consent screens. Pay attention to whether updates tie permissions directly to the Martha-labeled device profile.

Potential implications for users and developers

Even a codename can matter, because it tells you the shape of the pairing and configuration logic. That affects user experience and can influence developer testing workflows.

User experience: setup, pairing, and account linkage

If the app uses a stable internal label like “Martha” to route device setup, then errors in that mapping could affect onboarding. You’d typically see symptoms like:

Developer experience: testing, SDK expectations, and QA

From a developer perspective, codenames often map to internal build targets and staging backends. That can affect:

  • What test devices are eligible for a given feature flag
  • How QA reproduces hardware-specific bugs
  • Whether beta testing is gated by model family

If you’re building for Android XR, you care less about “Martha” as a word and more about whether the companion app and firmware agree on a device profile.

Common misconceptions and how to avoid them

The biggest mistakes people make with leaked device names are treating them like confirmed product branding or confirmed timelines.

Martha is not necessarily the final product name

Internal codenames are often replaced late in the process, after industrial design locks and marketing decides naming. “Martha” could also be a temporary label reused across multiple prototype iterations.

Assume it’s an identifier until a public naming announcement happens.

A codename in an app doesn’t prove release timing

An app can contain device routing logic long before hardware arrives in meaningful numbers. It can also be staged, meaning it exists for specific regions, accounts, or beta cohorts.

In other words: “Martha” being present today doesn’t guarantee anything about ship dates or consumer availability.

Troubleshooting: when the evidence doesn’t line up

If you can’t find “Martha” in the way you expected—or if it appears but doesn’t correlate with pairing—here are the most common causes.

Multiple device profiles in one app

Companion apps frequently support more than one device model, even if only one is active right now. “Martha” might exist for one profile while your build targets another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Stale strings after server-side changes

It’s possible for the app to still contain old labels while the backend changes the routing logic. In that case, you’ll see “Martha” in the APK but it won’t appear in real pairing logs.

Regional variants and staged rollouts

Google (and most large OEM ecosystems) often roll features out in waves. If your phone/account isn’t in the cohort, “Martha” may not trigger during setup, even if the label exists in the app.

Bottom Line

If Google’s Android XR glasses show up as Martha in a companion app, that strongly suggests the codename is being used to route device-specific setup and configuration. It’s a useful breadcrumb, but it’s not proof of the final product name or release timing.

The most reliable approach is to verify whether “Martha” connects to pairing/provisioning behavior, not just whether the string exists somewhere in the app. That’s how you separate real device-type plumbing from incidental leftovers.
