Google’s 3.6 GW Constellation Deal: About 25% Is New Nuclear Capacity

Google and Constellation Energy announced agreements covering a combined 3,590 megawatts (MW) of power in the PJM Interconnection, the largest U.S. power grid. About 890 MW—roughly 25%—is intended to come from uprates at existing nuclear units. The other 2,700 MW is covered by a separate supply agreement and is not tied to a specific generation source.

What the 3.6 GW figure includes

The headline figure rounds 3,590 MW across two agreements announced October 6, 2026. They have different terms and roles: one is designed to add nuclear capacity through upgrades; the other is a long-term purchase of power from Constellation’s PJM generation fleet.

Agreement Capacity Term Source and purpose
Nuclear uprates 890 MW 20 years Incremental capacity from upgrades at existing nuclear units
PJM fleet supply 2,700 MW 15 years Supply from Constellation’s PJM fleet; not tied to a specific generation source

The figures and terms are from Constellation’s announcement and Reuters’ report. The 890 MW is approximately 24.8% of 3,590 MW, hence about one quarter. The combined total should not be read as 3.6 GW of new nuclear generation: only the 890 MW component is described as new nuclear capacity, and it relies on uprating existing reactors.

How the nuclear capacity is expected to be added

The 20-year power purchase agreement is intended to support equipment and technology upgrades at 11 Constellation-owned nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. Constellation says the projects are expected to add 890 MW to the PJM grid; the first uprate is expected in 2028. These are planned future upgrades, not a completed delivery or a new nuclear plant construction project.

Constellation chairman, president and CEO Joe Dominguez said, “Preserving and expanding the output of the existing nuclear fleet and developing new clean generation is critical to meeting our nation’s growing energy needs while keeping costs affordable for homes and businesses.” The statement describes the company’s rationale; it is not evidence of a measured future effect on electricity prices.

What the separate 2,700 MW agreement means

The additional 2,700 MW is covered by a 15-year energy supply agreement drawing on Constellation’s PJM generation fleet. Reuters reports that this supply is not tied to one specific generation source. It is therefore distinct from the nuclear uprate agreement, which is explicitly intended to add capacity at named existing nuclear units.

Investment, jobs, and technology partnership

Constellation says the agreements represent more than $4.3 billion in new investment. The company also estimates that the projects will sustain roughly 4,400 existing jobs and create approximately 7,200 construction jobs during the building period. These are company-reported estimates, not independently verified outcomes.

Separately, Google and Constellation announced an expanded five-year technology alliance. Constellation selected Google Cloud and Gemini Enterprise workflows for operational use, with stated focus areas including uprate planning, plant generation optimization, and critical-infrastructure protection. This technology arrangement accompanies the power agreements but is not part of their electricity supply terms.

Google’s broader statement that its agreements involving uprates and restarts enable over 1.5 GW of new U.S. nuclear capacity is a portfolio figure, not the amount attributable to this Constellation deal alone. Google global head of energy and power Amanda Peterson Corio said, “We’re committed to meeting our growth responsibly by actively investing in clean, reliable power that brings new capacity to our nation’s grids.”
