Googlebooks are Google’s new consumer laptop category, built around ChromeOS, Android apps and closer integration with Android phones; Chromebooks are laptops that run ChromeOS. Choose based on the apps you need, whether phone-to-laptop continuity matters, and whether a school or employer must manage the device. There is no established category-wide performance winner, so compare the exact models rather than assuming one is faster or better value.
What is a Googlebook, and how is it different from a Chromebook?
Google describes a Googlebook as a new category of flagship laptop combining ChromeOS and Android technology. Its pitch emphasizes premium materials, Gemini features, Android apps, and ways to access a connected phone’s apps and files or continue tasks between devices. Some features require current software on both the laptop and phone. These are Google’s product descriptions, not independent test results. Google’s Googlebook FAQ

A Chromebook is a laptop running ChromeOS. Google positions Chromebooks around everyday speed and simplicity, with Google services and cloud storage, security features, and support for common online tasks. “Googlebook” here means the laptop category, not Google Play Books or ebooks. Phone integration and Android apps
Google says a Googlebook can connect with an Android phone to access phone apps and files, and can interact with apps running on the phone without installing them on the laptop. Googlebooks can also install Android apps from Google Play. That integration is most relevant if you regularly move between a phone and laptop or rely on phone apps in your work. Some Chromebooks support Android apps from Google Play, but support varies by model. On a school- or work-managed Chromebook, an administrator may disable the Play Store or app downloads. Before buying, confirm that the exact Chromebook supports the app you need and that your organization allows it. Google’s guidance on Android apps on Chromebooks

Which is better for school or business?
For a centrally managed school or business fleet, a Chromebook is the safer fit under Google’s stated 2026 rollout. Google says the first wave of Googlebooks is designed for personal consumer use and does not yet support domain enrollment or centralized fleet management. A comprehensive Googlebook management experience is planned to start rolling out in the second half of 2027; that is a future plan, not a currently available capability. Google for Education describes Chromebook controls for centralized deployment and management. It also positions Chromebook Plus as a higher-power, higher-speed, higher-memory tier than standard Chromebooks for education, with additional AI-oriented capabilities. Schools should check their own app, policy and device-management requirements rather than assuming that every Chromebook or Googlebook is interchangeable. Google for Education
Models, prices and support to compare
Google names Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo among the manufacturers in the first wave of Googlebooks. One dated US Google Store listing checked on October 4, 2026, showed a Dell XPS Googlebook at $999, with Snapdragon X Elite, at least 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB of storage and a stated starting weight of 2.2 lb. Which should you buy?
- Choose a Chromebook if you want a ChromeOS laptop for web browsing, documents and schoolwork, or if your school or employer currently requires centralized Chromebook management. Verify the model’s support window, required apps and organizational policies.
- Consider a Googlebook if its advertised Android phone integration, Google Play access and Gemini features suit your workflow, and the particular model meets your app, software and budget needs. Its current management limitations make it a poor assumption for a centrally managed fleet.
- Pause and check compatibility if you depend on a specific desktop program, accessibility tool, Android app or managed-device policy. Category descriptions alone are not a compatibility guarantee.
The deciding question is not which name sounds newer: it is whether a specific device supports your essential apps and management needs, and whether its price and features make sense for you.
