“Google Translate Gets a Google Search Feature” refers to a real Google announcement from December 3, 2009—not a new 2026 feature. Google integrated its existing cross-language search capability into Google Search as Translated search. The tool translated a query, searched pages in selected foreign languages, and returned translated results. The original Search Options control was later retired; historical records place its removal in May 2013.
What Google announced on December 3, 2009
Google’s announcement, titled “Searching the global web just got a little easier”, described an integration rather than a simple translate button. Google Translate had already offered a cross-language search function “for a while.” Google was moving that capability into the main Google Search experience and calling it Translated search.
The goal was to help people find information that might not be published in their own language. Instead of requiring a user to know foreign-language keywords, Google attempted to handle both discovery and translation in one search workflow.
How Translated search worked
- Enter a query in your own language.
- On the results page, click Show Options at the top.
- Choose Translated search from the Search Options panel.
- Accept Google’s suggested search languages or modify the selections manually.
- Review results from foreign-language pages translated into the user’s language.
The contemporary interface used “Show Options,” not the later “Tools” label often associated with Google Search. The control was relatively easy to miss: contemporary coverage by The Guardian said users had to open Show Options and then locate Translated search.

The underlying retrieval process
Translated search combined several operations:
- Google translated the original query into one or more target languages.
- It searched pages written in those languages.
- It translated the returned material so the user could read it in the preferred language.
That made it different from translating a page after finding it. Page translation answers, “I have found this foreign-language page; can I read it?” Translated search attempted to answer, “Can Google find relevant foreign-language pages about this topic in the first place?”
The Antwerp example
Google illustrated the feature with a search for “restaurant reviews Antwerp.” A user could have Google translate the query into French and Dutch, search pages in both languages, and return translated results. That mattered because useful local reviews and recommendations might exist only in languages commonly used in the region.
The same approach was intended for hotels, restaurants, events, travel planning, foreign-language news, and research into companies, products, or subjects discussed abroad.

Launch-era language limits
| Capability | What Google said in December 2009 |
|---|---|
| Search-language pool | 51 languages |
| Languages shown simultaneously | Up to five |
| Language selection | Google could suggest likely languages, or users could choose them manually |
These figures describe the 2009 launch, not current Google Translate or Google Search language support. Google said its system could infer appropriate languages from the query and context, while also allowing users to change the choices.
Why the results could be imperfect
Google explicitly warned that its language-selection algorithm was not perfect. Quality depended on several separate steps, each of which could fail:
Query translation
A grammatically plausible translation could still miss the intended meaning. Idioms, specialist terms, spelling variants, and words with several meanings might produce the wrong search terms.

Language selection
Automatic selection could omit a relevant language or choose one that was less useful for the particular subject. A city such as Antwerp has multiple relevant language communities, and the best search language can vary by topic and source.
Result translation
Machine translation could blur tone, legal meaning, technical terminology, or cultural context. Google’s announcement presented translated results as useful access, not as publication-quality translation. A 2009 academic evaluation, “How effective is Google’s translation service in search?”, reflects the technical limitations being studied at the time.

Names and local terminology
Proper names, product titles, addresses, and organizations often should remain unchanged. Translating them literally can hide the spelling people actually use. Travel, food, government, medical, and commercial searches also depend heavily on local vocabulary rather than dictionary equivalents.

Source reliability
A translated page is not automatically a trustworthy page. Readers still need to check the source’s authorship, date, evidence, and context. For legal instructions, medical guidance, contracts, safety notices, immigration procedures, and financial terms, machine translation should be treated as a starting point rather than authoritative advice.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How it differed from Google News search
Google News had introduced a separate cross-language search capability in August 2008. Its purpose was to surface relevant stories from news sources in other languages, particularly when local coverage could add perspectives or breaking information; see Google’s “News without borders” announcement. December 2009’s Translated search was broader: it applied to general web searches, not only news.
What happened to the feature?
The original Search Options implementation should be treated as a historical Google Search feature, not a current control that readers can reliably find in 2026. Google’s 2009 announcement documents the launch. Later historical accounts, including the discontinued-features section of Google Search’s history, place its removal in May 2013 and report that it had not attracted much use.

That does not mean Google Translate as a whole was discontinued. The retired item was the old Google Search workflow that translated queries and searched foreign-language pages.
Ways to approximate the idea today
Because the 2009 interface is no longer dependable, someone trying to reach foreign-language information can use a more manual workflow:
- Translate important keywords into the target language before searching.
- Search directly in that language when you know the locally used terms.
- Translate pages after locating them.
- Compare multiple translations when a phrase is ambiguous.
- Ask a fluent speaker to verify material that affects health, law, safety, money, or official procedures.
These steps reproduce parts of the old concept, but they are not evidence that the original Translated search control still exists in Google Search.
Why the 2009 announcement still matters
Google was addressing a problem that ordinary page translation could not solve: language barriers affect what users discover, not just what they can read after discovery. Translated search tried to move translation earlier in the process, into query expansion and retrieval. Its short life also shows why multilingual search is difficult: finding the right local terms, choosing the right language, and preserving meaning in translation are separate technical challenges.
